Check if the TV has a gaming mode, also turn off any post-processing and filtering options. Won't be as fast as a CRT but it'll help a lot.

LCD TVs aren't built for low latency. 100ms delay on your TV show is irrelevant. But it's very noticeable in a game.

couple hours grinding it out, taking each city across the planet...but why? I basically already won, I'd rather have those couple of hours.

Beating that level required lots of time and memory. Did it a few times single player but 2 players was near impossible

Yea if I recall ~30 years ago it goes faster and faster and you zoom out the screen into a new level where you walk around again. Died there
