Our son had a cat that been raised from a kitten to about a year old in a kennel with dogs. He barked like a dog as well. They had to teach him to meow but he still barked more than anything else.
The panting reminds me of ages ago when we had a LSD party at a friend's place. I brought glow sticks, she and I tied them off to strings and we played with her cats all night. Come morning, those cats were panting and would not move for anything, they were so exhausted. But they had a hell of a lot of fun that night!
I mean, trying to rationalize what made you like this certainly doesn't lower their perceived cleverness. It's also not like you can be perceived as any less clever.
Like many things, it really depends. Sometimes cats may pant to cool off, similarly to dogs, and just need a breather. Other times it may be an indicator of stress or potentially something worse of it's excessively labored or continues for a long period of time. This cat has apparently learned to pant deliberately in order to fit in with and communicate with dogs. But yeah, when a normally socialized cat isn't exhausted or overheated panting is usually not a good sign. Could be stress / anxiety or a symptom of a heart condition.

More like he's really hot or has bad anxiety. That tail doesn't lie.

Isnt panting like a dog not great for the cat? - serious question.
