First, as much as they might deserve to be punished now there will be a time when they deserve that punishment to be lifted. I briefly taught at a tech summer camp for kids, and one of the activities a lot of them did was making minecraft stuff - their own mods for the more advanced kids, but just making levels and worlds for their friends to play through, too.
One of the kids was in tears because he'd forgotten to back up his world at the end of the last day and was going to lose it... and that was only a week's worth of stuff, not five years!

I can sort of tell you how this turns out. Different era. My brother returned home from school with something he made there in art. Some small diorama that in his own words he was proud of. My mom took one look at it, said it was crap and threw it in the bin. My brother wasn't even a teenager at that point. Ever since that time he has then felt the need to hide anything he makes or does, a compulsion to only do things in secret, never share, and shy away. He is now 65. That scar runs deep.

The best thing you could do is play with them, or at least sit with them while they go on adventures. Minecraft and Roblox are fun if you're invested in your kids. Come up with ideas together, create a checklist, set a silly goal. Just have fun.

With my flavor of the spectrum I don’t have sentimental attachment to physical item but I have almost all of the gaming consoles since my teenage years. The time and joy I got from the games on those consoles mean a fuck ton to me. Having 5 years of game progress and memories deleted would be like losing a physical part of my life. Someone purposely deleting that is an inhumane action in my view of the world. If this is real I feel horrible for that human.

I'm a Gen X, that shits offensive to me. We did touch grass, we did go down to a fishing hole, we also grew up on video games, and the start of the home PC revolution. We got to see all of these amazing creative tools come to life that give amazing opportunities we couldn't dream of when we first sat down in front of an Apple IIe to play Oregon Trail.
