I've been to the Maldives 2 times for work. It's beautiful. But it wasn't any better than a good Hawaii or Caribbean. If you're going for the scuba, it was nice, but (in my only 2 dives) not unique.
On a weekend a year after that, you might see nothing but water, the way things are going for them. They need to grab those tourist dollars now while they still can.
Plenty of places to ethically spend your money and time in South East Asia.
For that specific tropical paradise kind of thing, I'd suggest the Philippines. Can't go wrong with Thailand, either. Zanzibar might do the job, too, depending on from where you're flying.
Having recently checked this off 2 years ago, not Maldives. I spent months researching resorts like this trying to find one with a positive impact. Finally settled on Belize. Found a resort with local owners and that has traceable and public records of helping locals, good pay, and environment standards. It was very far from where I started my search (Fiji and Maldives) but it was the best vacation I ever had

Not at all similar. I get what you're saying, and you're definitely correct comparing it to something like a Sandals resort, or any other mid-range all-inclusive, but it isn't at all like the private over water bungalow with 24 hour butler service the 2k a night type of thing offers.
Oh, yeah, I can see that and agree. In fact, I bet you could get even more pristine, private, and unspoiled beaches in cheaper areas just because they're not popular. Personally, I like a mix of both, I'm a sucker for luxury accommodations and good service.

I used to get around about six times a year for a while, and I can assure you a similar holiday can be had for around US$50 a night in some places.
I pay around half that for a simple room for two months, a forty second walk from the beach in a tropical country.

Yeah, good point. I think I was referring more to the environment, like the islands around Boracay or even Langkawi.
The whole service aspect doesn't interest me, so I shouldn't comment.
