W Boson Mass Confirmed at LHC

CMS is the Compact Muon Solenoid at CERN's Large Hadron Collider LHC. In a project that lasted nearly a decade, physicists measured the mass of the W boson with unprecedented precision. The W boson is named after the weak nuclear force, one of the four fundamental forces in physics.
This is the Standard Model of elementary particles. A boson is a subatomic particle with an integer spin. Z bosons have zero electric charge. The charged W+ and W- bosons are antiparticles of each other. They have a very short half-life of 3 times 10 to the minus 25 seconds.
This is the data from the high-precision measurements of the W+ and W- bosons. In billions of proton-proton collisions, scientists identified 100 million events that produced a W boson decaying to a muon and a neutrino. The measured mass of the W boson is 80,360.2 megaelectron volts (MeV).
The new value, shown in red in the diagram, is consistent with predictions from the Standard Model of particle physics. It matches with earlier measurements, with one exception: the value from the CDF Collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron collider is 73 megaelectron volts higher.
The Feynman diagram describes the temporal sequence of processes in the subatomic world. A neutron (bottom left) that decays into a proton (top left) produces an intermediate W− boson which decays into an electron and an electron antineutrino (d is the down quark and u the up quark).
This is the collider detector at Fermilab, located in Batavia, Illinois. Its mass is 45 tons. The Tevatron is the world's former highest-energy particle accelerator. Fermilab's most important discovery was that of the top quark in 1995.

I always read it as "large hardon collider" ;D

Top quark discovered in “nineteen hundred and ninety-five” . . . The physicist narrating this says these word like it was in an entirely different century . . .
Oh. Shit.
QuantumSpaceTacoGuitarist
This is the stuff that got me into particle physics! I did my senior thesis in high school about CERN and the LHC. To quantise and observe this is amazing.
Oktay74tn
Yes, it is fascinating. Time could also be quantized. For example, this could be important for the functioning mechanism of enzymes.

I've always thought that a great name for a thrash metal band would be "HADRON". The first album would be titled "Exposing our Bosons"

I immediately went to trump shutting it down where it says "weasel"...shutting down science fits the current picture of government...

Well of course Boston is in Massachusetts - no wait I read the title wrong.

I first read "West Boston, Mass confirmed at LHC" and was very confused. How would half of a major city get into the colider?
NotAllowedToArgueUnlessYouPay
Same. I figured the thumbnail was part of some new subway line.
selbie
Gotta be wicked smaht ta work there!
ExaDeuce
No they experimentally shown that west boston exists
Froggie243
I was trying to figure out what college we were talking about and why boston was confirmed for it 🤣🤣
wowzie
ngl, I thought someone had poorly typed out West Boston, Mass... but no, this post is a thing of beauty 🌸

I love how I've read about subatomic particles for decades and still come away with only the fact that they're really small
mymustachecallstheshots
Pbs spacetime on youtube, its great material and they manage to make this stuff fairly approachable
BukkakeRider3000
And I'm here like: "Her bosons give me a hadron, wink wink."
Maverickaura
A neat way I've heard them described is that they are basically knots of light energy that got bound by the forces of nature. And the reason they decay and behave so erratically is because the knot is coming unraveled and sending that radiation everywhere like it normally would.
mikeatike
Compact Muon Solenoid? Arent all Muons compact?
MikeRInternetTraveler
Right?!? I don’t know what I just read, but I know it’s cool as shit. This is, like, comic book levels of super-science. It doesn’t make a lick of sense to me, but it’s real, and it’s awesome.
DrKonrad
At least you got that right
Oktay74tn
The very short timescale of its existence is very fascinating, too. :)
darkiro
Indeed. Puts things in perspective
ItHappenedInThe20thCentury
Having also read about subatomic particles for decades, I'd say they're probably even smaller than that.

Does anybody know where I can buy one of those? I really need a Large Hadron Collider (For recreational purpose)

Rhode and Schwartz may have a second hand one lying around somewhere, else you will have to order a custom fit for your apartment.
HenryLongfellowIII
R&S are pretty high end. I like that CERN built some of their own test equipment and released the designs for anyone in the world to use for free.
mikeatike
Sorry, all I have in stock is a Medium Hadrron Collider.

Costco gottem.
mikeatike
Welcome to Costco, I love you.

What accounts for the discrepancy between the LHC measurement and the CDF measurement?
Oktay74tn
This is a quote from the article at nature.com: "The dominant sources of uncertainty are the muon momentum calibration and the PDFs (parton distribution functions)."

Hopefully you dont have to it vis a word doc. Yeah our customers demanded they create templates in word that we turn into pdfs

I'm a simpleton but do you ever think that despite the highly exact machines and equations, we just have the whole thing fucking wrong? Like "we measured the Bosons mass" but there is an extremely opposite way the universe works and we're just stupid? I mean I bet every scientist worth their salt has asked that to themselves but where does cogito ergo sum start creeping back into what we measure and how we can measure it. Weed is on me guys
Oktay74tn
A German physics professor at the LMU University in Munich once said: "If there is a world formula it must be something like b=4" referring to the b4 move in chess.
GravyEducation
Heard, I am a chess guy but hate memorizing... *googles* that's... I get the metaphor kinda but I'm also looking at the opening. That's an extreme fianchetto. In your words, why do you think he compared it to that move?
Oktay74tn
He said it jokingly. He meant if such a formula exists, it should be something simple.
eldorel
Yup. Like 20 entire branches of 'theoretical _' fields are basically based on the assumption that our universe is an emergent property.
eldorel
Basically 'if something we can't directly interact with is underneath all of this, how do we identify it and can we indirectly interact?'
GravyEducation
Why is? WHY IS? COGITO IS THE BEST FUCKIN THING I GOT!
