Not really so. They have been real world implementations. The problem is that when it's larger than a very small community where everyone knows everyone else and there's mutual investment, the factors I mentioned come into play.
People being what they are, it can't work on a larger basis.

Huxley was more accurate in his prediction than Orwell.

That's not exactly true. It's just that 1984 was mostly focusing on the "outer party", which was the class that had some power but were tightly controlled. The proles were not, they could read if they wanted to, but didn't want to.

I recommend it. The parallels are chilling, but like so many authors, he wasn't making shit up, he was simply observing trends around him and extrapolating.
