If anyone's struggling with their new life indoors, let me try to share what I've learned as someone who made themselves miserable by staying indoors and maintaining terrible habits.

There are maybe a dozen things that each contribute 5% to your happiness, which together add up to 60%, i.e. it's the difference between having a good 8/10 day and a terrible 2/10 day. Some of these things are: sleep, diet, daylight, fresh air, clean clothes, hygiene, exercise, tidy room, clearly defined workspace, etc.

Each of these things in isolation isn't a big deal, but together they can add up to a miserable life or a happy one. You can probably add to this list with personal things you struggle with, e.g. browsing Imgur for hours a day, jerking off in the morning, snacking on sour candy that ruins your tastebuds for real food, whatever. You almost certainly know what habits you have that are bad for you. Assign each one a 5% value and see how much of your day they're costing you.

A rudimentary list of recommendations (YMMV):
- Sleep 00:00-08:00 every day
- Get up and get ready for the day as if you were going to go out to work/study
- Put on your shoes even if you're working at home (socks mean hometime, shoes mean worktime!)
- Open a window and sit by it while you work, get that daylight and fresh air!
- Ideally separate your office from the rest of the house, but if you're like me and only have a single "allroom" for your life, like a studio or student bedroom, set up a separate desk arrangement, login or computer environment or anything you can do that makes it feel separate from your free time.
- Keep ahead of your laundry so you always have clean clothes
- Make some kind of record of what you did today, either with time-tracking software, a notebook, spreadsheet, whatever. What gets measured gets managed and your time is the most precious resource you have. Make sure you're aware how you spend it.
- Go for a walk outside if you can, but at the very least do a mild workout at home (e.g. push-ups, sit-ups, squats, etc)

Everyone's different, but these are my two cents. Any questions, I'll be in the comments.

FP EDIT: glad this was useful to some people. Lots of people are complaining about the "shoes indoors" thing, so I realised I wasn't clear enough: I have a pair of clean "indoor shoes" that I don't mind wearing around the house. It just makes me feel more active and less relaxed.

I hate it when I have to leave my house for work and shopping

Whenever I see posts or videos of people saying they’re going crazy being confined indoors, I feel like I’m wrong, cos this is normal to me

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

ok, dont wear your shoes inside, that's just nasty - but slippers are fine, i'm about this list

It's pretty amusing to see all these extroverts losing their goddamn minds at home, when they normally don't give a single though to what...

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"normal" society is like for introverts, or those with social anxiety.

I always felt that my belly button's ability to produce lint seemingly at will was my most precious resource, however time is also valuable.

WHAT KIND OF MONSTER WEARS SHOES INSIDE THE HOUSE?!

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Please disinfect the soles of any shoes you wear inside. You would not believe what you are bringing inside your home if you don’t. 1/2

Thank you for this. I could use getting into some good habits.

Also, correct use of meme colours! Kudos!

The list you made in the first paragraph is pretty close to Florence Nightingale’s philosophy of nursing. And it’s everything we deny those

In prison and psychiatric hospitals. The mind and body cannot be well without those! You cracked the code!

If struggling to motivate yourself to get a workout in, spend a good 20-30 minutes just stretching! Then you’ve at least done the minimum.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I did this. After a thorough stretch, I felt balance, opened, and energized. It made my desire to workout occur more naturally.

Meditation and running. Shit changed my life.

What kind of meditation? I tried a couple of years ago but did not enjoyed it that much

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Tbf, neither do I. Meditation is kinda...blank. It's the feeling after that I enjoy, like a healthy reset for my emotions.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I just focus on regular breathing with my eyes half closed. 4 secs in, 5 secs out, for as long as it takes for that to becomemy total focus.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I like mediation using sounds, not a fan of focussing on the breath. It took me several attempts before I really got into it and saw the /1

Meditation* - benefits. Like anything it takes time to get into it. Which is why I think a lot of people quit before they see progress

"Put on your shoes even if you're working at home (socks mean hometime, shoes mean worktime!)" is this what the barbarians who wear shoes >

None of those thing help existential angst and need for human touch. They help overall but life is still hell so I do drugs instead.

D’y’know I thought this was going to be a typical imgur pity-fest. What you’ve done, though, is really insightful and practical. Top marks.

No shoes indoors. No thanks.

I have severe anxiety too. I think knowing everyone is scared has made my anxiety feel OK. If that makes sense.

The Japanese have Ikigai, this is both your meaning to live and also little pleasures. Your ikigai can be coffee and sudoku if you enjoy it

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Ikigai can also be your broader passions, like raising your children as best you can or making the perfect meal. But you must enjoy it

I’m sick of feeling like I have to be afraid of people all the time. It’s fucking horrible

I'm tired of being sad. But I don't have a real job and I'm "medically frail" so I don't quite have enough spoons to go all day. Thoughts?

A fellow spoonie! Hi friend, I also have very few spoons. Over many years of therapy, I've learned great strategies & tools, happy to share!

Find your own rhythm. It just needs to be a rhythm. I can maybe do useful stuff for 4 hours a day. I sleep from 0:00-9:00, wake up and 1/

You're recommending me to wear shoes indoors? Must be American

6 years ago | Likes 97 Dislikes 1

I wear sandals at all times, in or out. My pups are good boys who, unfortunately, poop when I am sleeping. Only make that mistake once.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I grew up with shoes inside. My own house is no shoes. I go barefoot inside too. Shoes are gross and go in the closet by the front door.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I'm American and my family stopped wearing shoes inside when we were kids. I still take them off as an adult.

6 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

American here. Agree with everything except the shoes. Shoes are for streets, streets are for poop and pee and disease. Socks only inside.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's a gross habit unless the shoes are freshly washed. Don't wear shoes indoors, people, they got dog poop and trash on them.

6 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 1

You only have 1 kind of poop on your shoes?! Pft...amateur.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Maybe have clean shoes that don’t go outside.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Why would you even want to wear shoes inside?

6 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

In case you need to traverse a minefield of Legos.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Really fair point

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I’m American and the only people I know that wear shoes inside are people who didn’t grow up in America. I walk to my room then take 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My shoes off but I don’t wear them in the house otherwise.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Do you not have indoor shoes (slippers, scuffs, flip-flops, etc)? I know some go socks or barefeet only.

6 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Just socks or barefeet. Some few like to wear comfy slippers but usually after shower/sauna.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Socks is the way to go where i live.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

i have special "house socks" that are oversized and super comfy, I only wear them at home

My husband wears shoes while lying on the couch UNDER A BLANKET and it’s made me doubt our compatibility (well it contributes to the doubt)

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just get one of those boot cleaners like they have at the curling rinks.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Why would you assume Americans would wear shoes indoors?

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I'm not assuming ALL of them do, but in my experience it seems like it's a standard thing

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

idk what Americans you know (or are you just watching our TV shows?) but I have never seen anyone here that does

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

It's just a common fact that Americans wear shoes indoors. Except in Hawaii, Alaska and some other places. Where do you live?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

I’ve lived in California, Utah, Connecticut, and Illinois and I can also say that wearing shoes indoors has been frowned upon where I live.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

The USA I grew up in Wisconsin and have lived in Colorado, Idaho, and Montana and I am here to tell you that "common fact" is incorrect
