Okay, let's follow this (unfounded) hypothesis that there is a vast conspiracy in lying to the public that the world is round when it's actually flat. The reasonable question to ask is "Qui bono?" - who benefits? WHY go through all this effort - what is GAINED from engaging in such an enormous body of work to cover up some apparently simple natural truth? WHY do it? Waiting for an answer, flat-heads.

apart from the fact you can literally see the curve if you look out to ocean from the beach (I know, I live next to the coast) you can fucking MEASURE A CURVE ON THAT FUCKING IMAGE. I drew a line with MS paint, its only like 2 pixels, but the ocean in the middle of the image is higher than the edges.

Downtown Chicago looks like this from Illinois beach state park in northern Illinois. But “flat Earth” is not about whether the Earth is really flat or not. It’s an apocalypse cult and they choose to believe something that everyone else believes is false so that Jesus or Trump can show up and show that they were right and therefore the chosen ones and everyone else was wrong and going to hell or whatever. Don’t try to do science at them, that has nothing to do with their beliefs.

I remember as a child I went on a bike trip with my dad on a long stretch of straight road and could see a school bus parking in the distance going up and up as I got closer. I was still in elementary school and grasped the concept of round Earth easily.

Tell them to go to Ft Niagara in NY and look to the northwest. Theoretically Toronto should be visible across the water. But when you actually do this, all you'll see is the tops of the tallest buildings. You can't see the bases of them.

From what I've gathered, a lot of it that Earth being flat makes Earth special, which makes humans special, which either proves God or that Earth is the center of the universe, etc. This means everyone is lying in order to try to convince us we're not special, because they're agents of the Devil, etc. Alternatively, the government is covering it up because it's trying to see how dumb we are, to make us follow their lies blindly, so only sheep will believe the lies. Typical conspiracy stuff.

That's not the point, the sort of person that falls into conspiracy theories crave the feeling that they're in on some sort of big secret. They know the things that "They" don't want you to know, and that the rest of us are just gullible or trapped in the matrix. Rationality seldom comes into it.

What blows my mind about flat-earthers is how unbelievably easy it is to disprove it. Rent a sailboat and go sail around the world. Charter a high-altitude flight on a Mig-29. Send up a camera on a balloon. Forget the ground-based experiments, you can literally see the earth's curvature.

Which is why I specifically site the view from Ft Niagara in NY to Toronto. The city is just below the horizon, but some of the buildings are tall enough you can see them and know the city is there.

I think it would look similar to how it does with low visibility, where ground and sky blend into another, but further away. Like, when you look into distance from a mountain, the landscape gets more and more blue, the further away you look, but at some point, it's interrupted by the horizon. On a large flat world, this effect would just continue, until at the furthest point you can see, it would look like a blue wall.

I think a society living on such a world would be somewhat likely to develop a belief about either a dome or a wall around their world. AFAIK, the idea of the flat earth having an edge actually came from people seeing the horizon and thinking that you can actually reach it.

I always just assumed it was a natural extension of the fact that any shape has boundaries. And if we're not on the outer face of a very large sphere, then the land must end somewhere. But there is no one unified flat earth belief, it's a bunch of different ideologies and the only necessary overlap is, well, belief that the earth is flat
