Could be the smaller rubber kickballs? They have some heft to them so they travel a bit faster. The foam ones don't go as far either.

Reminds me of one time, someone tried to get fancy and jump over a throw, legs spread and all. Course all he did was get crushed in the 1/
2/ nuts by one of those lovely hard yellow balls hard enough to frontflip him onto his face. We didn't get to play dodgeball anymore.
