Literally the logic of the insurance companies for consumer driven health plans. Surely everybody has the time and energy to shop around and compare options for care while in the middle of a health crisis…
My wife and I have been trying to figure out which person’s insurance we should use, we have been using mine for the last two years, by “shopping” between the 2 plans my company offer vs the 3 plans her company offers. The plans change every year. Every year her enrollment ends before mine begins. If we don’t make a “choice” then we are either penalized thousands come tax time or we are stuck with shaky government issued insurance. I don’t understand why this is legal.
I feel fortunate that my insurance was only up 33% for 2026. My spouses went up by that much PLUS the deductible tripled to $7200 USD. It will price us out in a couple of years for sure.
California, that's illegal. It is illegal to not have health insurance. Now, to be fair, California's provided medical insurance is pretty cheap. I've never used it so I don't know how good it is.
TBH, going back over the past decade, the cost of my annual healthcare has never been close to the premiums being asked for on healthcare.gov... I can literally save tens of thousands of dollars by not getting health insurance...
The problem is that any sort of accident leading to hospitalization will bankrupt ppl w/o insurance.
I have to have hernia surgery after an accident as a loop of my intestine is pinched. Just the hospital cost for 1 hr of surgery is $43,000 USD. The surgeon and anesthesiologist fee will be at least that much more. Probably $100k all told.
The slightest medical complication and all of one's savings could be gone.

Same deal as every year: Shit got more expensive.
