Her name was Buffy. She was born April 2006 and I met her that August, when I was 16.
Cancer. The disgusting thing that took her from me. She had tumors throughout her body, but this particular bastard was the main source. It was a connective tissue tumor that I'd had surgically removed twice in the past year but it continued to grow back. This time around, it grew so large and so fast that it started to crush her veins and was preventing blood flow to her paw. This picture was taken a few days before she left me.
This is her as a young lady dog. Her nose Mohawk was the reason I picked her over her sister, even though she was scared to death. Both sisters were puppy mill rejects that a rescue group had saved.
Camping at Mark Twain National Forest.
Posing at Forest Park here in St. Louis.
Buffy with her brother Nelson.
No room for Nelson.
Paws crossed, like a lady.
Her last week, we went to a nearby park with a lake because she loves the water.
She loved to lay outside.
Her last bath.
Her goodbye cake (she also got a whole chicken before this).
Our last picture together.
We said goodbye while laying together on her bed in my backyard, underneath the tree. When she received the sedative, it started to drizzle just slightly, but the sun came out after she was given the second injection. She was no longer in pain.
My mother tried to light a lantern to release after the vet left, however it was a windy day and there are lots of power lines and trees in the yard. We ended up almost catching ourselves on fire and running to get the hose to put it out. It cheered me up a bit, watching my mom run around with basically a bag of fire.
Goodbye, my love.

Dogs cross their paws when they feel content and happy. She knew how loved she was.

Had to put my dog down last month. Reading your comment just helped a little
danishjuggler21
Okay, seriously, when is congress gonna pass that law making it illegal for dogs to die? Seriously, doggos should be exempt from death

He had tumours all over his body as well. After I walked him he stayed in the backyard to rest only to find him dead with flies around.

Just found out our dog will likely paralyzed in his hind legs. Depending on his pain, we are considering putting him down. I feel for you

If acupuncture is an option where you are at, I would suggest taking your friend to sessions. I've seen it do miracles.
iloveyouspikespiegel
Damn, I'm sorry. All I can say is personally the week leading up to the euthanasia was terrible, but afterward there was some relief that-
iloveyouspikespiegel
Her pain was gone. I hope you and your dog find some peace.
thisnameisntfunny
We waited until it happened. She was a good dog, just why of 16 years. I was 17. Hardest day of my life to say goodbye to her.
spenace
Yes we will be waiting until it happens. But if he is not in pain, we may try to get him a little scooter wheelchair
MironGaines
I couldn't bare to make that choice, and thankfully I didn't have to.

I feel you! I lost my cat to kidney failure last year. I still find myself crying like a child about it. I loved her so much :'(
iloveyouspikespiegel
So sorry. I know the kidneys are usually a big issue later in life for cats. It sounds like your baby was well loved.
leighlovesbooks
I lost my boy to kidney failure as well. A sweet orange tabby. The song Tired Tiger by Moving Mountains always reminds me of him.
Howdidjadewdat
Pretty sure she knew who was a good girl.

Up in Doggy Heaven, here's the thing. You trade your leash for angels wings. And once we've all said goodbye. You take a running leap 1/2
CongratsYouAreHereNow
and you learn to fly! And though we'll all miss you everyday. We know you're up there rollin' in Heaven Hay. And here's the part that 1/2
CongratsYouAreHereNow
hurts the most. Human's outlive the ones we love the most. Bye, bye, Li'l Miss Buffy! Miss you and your coat, fluffy! Bye, bye, Li'l 1/2
CongratsYouAreHereNow
Miss Buffy! You're 5000 candles in the wind. Maybe someday we'll collar up again. And I know I'll always miss my doggy friend! 1/2
CongratsYouAreHereNow
Spread your wings and fly! Spread your wings and fly! Tremendously sorry for your loss @OP, until you meet again

Our vet was telling us about a multi-year study looking at cancer in Goldens... Our girl died (at age 14) of cancer. Feels.
charlotteb132
We had to put down my golden at Christmas due to lung cancer. It seemed like it came out of nowhere. He was only 8. :(
demosthenes89
It's horribly common. My in-laws' golden has a tumor on her paw just like your girl did. They have a serious problem with the breed.

Bad breeding. They're basically cancer retrievers.

My silly Puddy had multiple tumors and died. But prior to that, his brother Mitch (husky/shepherd) also did. I think it's crap in food.
brumbievan
Our golden got a tumor on her optic nerve when she was young. Vet was able to remove it (and the eye unfortunately). Years later - 1/?

2/? During my last year of college - she was diagnosed with a lymphoma that eventually took her away from us. It was a very rare one that

My first golden, Daisy, suffered from a horrible open sore tumor from cancer at 5 year old. We found a cure and she was okay for two years 1

Then two years later, while I was away at boarding school, my mom came home and found her on the floor, only able to wag her tail.

She was the best dog, but having lost her at a young age devastated our family.
iloveyouspikespiegel
So sorry. Unfortunately when I adopted her I suspected this would happen eventually. They are the best dogs though.
Howdidjadewdat
BEST. Dogs.

This is titled 'Forever with me'. It looks a lot like you two.

Wow this is awesome, thank you!
