Heard a great NPR interview with a Hollywood pet trainer who said basically that cats are super easy to train as long as they are hungry, once they have gotten their treats, they just stop till they are hungry again. Unlike dogs, who want to make you happy. Apparently bunnies are the hardest to train.
Can confirm. I had our cats so far that they kept off my bed. I just consequently put them off it, whenever I saw them on it. And at some point they didn't go up there in the first place any more. (No, I do not like a bunch of cat hair on my bed, sorry. Allergies aren't fun like that.) For the rest of the family that was unachievable. Sure, if you roll a dice whether you want to enforce a rule or not, every time, that's what you get: Cats doing what their impulses tell them.
Cats are extremely reward positive, but also extremely punishment averse. So yeah you can train cats, but boy do you need more patience than with dogs. But over all you don't really need to train cats as much as dogs.
This! You just have to find the exact reward they want, and it can change day to day or more. Dont punish like dogs, just dont reward and they'll get it. Some are very food motivated and can be easier to train, some dont have the brain cell and are harder to train. But its definitely doable and worth it when you get it!

Hand-cranked ones also work, if you don't have one of those you only have to lift the pull-ring of a pop top can.
. . . I know of nothing that can substitute for a vacuum cleaner, however.
