What does 8/10 actually mean? 80th percentile? Or 3 sigma range? Also from what population? Total of affected gender? Of its nubile subgroup? Of its eligible subgroup? Of age group?

The best, or worst case, depending on how you take it, is that she thinks this is the hottest idea ever.

I feel like calling a girl an eight isn't really a compliment. Like, being above average on a numerical scale is kinda offset by placing a girl on a numerical scale in the first place.

Yeah, but it's needed for the pun.

Is there an ISO standard for misogyny? Asking for a friend.

If we're doing video game reviews, 8 is acceptable, 7 is horrible, 6 and below are reserved only for low budget titles, 9 is good and they're not allowed to give 10s

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Kinda like NPS scoring

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Even if the title is low budget and absolutely horrible it's not gonna get lower than a 6, because once a reviewer gives a score that low companies quickly stop giving them pre-sale access to their games. Losing that access puts a reviewer at a massive disadvantage since they'll no longer be able to publish a day 1 review of the game like everyone else, and day 1 is when most of the traffic happens. That conflict of interest is why game journalism is almost completely worthless.

Wow ur really smart, what are you, like a B+?

This comment reminds me that I'm quite content to tolerate a fair amount of cunty, so long as it's hilarious. +1

My partner and I are both professors, but we took really different paths to get there. She was a straight-A student throughout her life, with one exception: she got a B in a baseball module in gym class. So now if she struggles with something (like separating the produce bag at the grocery store or something else mundane), I get to say "ITS BASEBALL ALL OVER AGAIN"

If someone is insecure, a compliment that feels true can be more meaningful than an objectively better compliment because it might not get shrugged off immediately as "a lie" or "wrong".

Oh, I've re-read your comment. You were more saying that boiling someone down to a single number is kind of reductive, even if it's meant to be an overall positive remark?

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yeah, this is what I was getting at. The B+ comment wasn't to suggest that there's anything wrong with being a B+ student (like I was), or that its not worthy of compliment or to be proud of. Rather, its not who you are, nor describe how smart you are. And using it as a proxy like that misunderstands what it *means* to be smart or valuable - to make an analogy to appearance ratings.
