The past couple months have been pretty hard for me, so my anxiety and depression have been worse than usual. Which has meant that I've been really behind on my cleaning (and in turn the state of the apartment has made me feel worse...so the cycle continues). Finally got around to doing some much-needed cleaning today. My place isn't near where I want it to be, but just cleaning in itself has given me the motivation to keep it up. And I feel better than I have in a while, which is pretty great.

Just wanted to share on here since I'm feeling pretty proud of myself right now. Also wanted to motivate anyone who might be going through the same thing. It can get better! I've been trying to stick to a "clean one thing a day" rule the past couple days (clean a couple dishes, put out the recycling, etc) and it's helped a lot. Baby steps!

I like to blast music when I clean

I like to slap on some headphones and dance awkwardly while cleaning. The Moana soundtrack got me through cleaning the shed.

It's the best. I was blasting it except when I was vacuuming

The best of ABC got me through moving house last year. Cheesy 80s pop love songs, but brilliant!

Fantastic effort! Recognizing your depressed is so important too, being aware that the lens you view the world with is askew will save you

I can relate to this so much. I'm super proud of you, OP. This should totally be a success kid.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Whoa we're on the same wavelength OP! I've been putting off cleaning for months and you're right, it's a vicious cycle when it's dirty.

v I SO did the same today! Fuck depression!!!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It really is the little things. We lose sight of that all too often. We focus on what we can’t control, and lose control of what we can.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

+1 @op. Cleaning is the best for that thing. Way to take care of yourself ❤️

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Weird how that helps, when i'm feeling down I clean and feel better about myself and my place

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Someone must be pretty deep in the hole to feel proud to be able to get motivation to simply clean.Shit sounds bad

I turned cleaning into an anxiety reliever. All that anxious energy is turned into something productive, and my house is spotless. Win-win!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Oh, well done you! I've done the same this morning, cleared some junk out of the kitchen, feels good. Fuck depression!!!

I tried a tip I got from my old phsycologist. 3 things rule. No matter how small it seems. Do 3 things everyday so you can look back and

Feel proud of what you did that day. Cleaning is a big one for me, making a proper meal or something new is also big, etc.

Doing anything productive does wonders, wether it be cleaning , music , art, the gym , it's getting yourself to start is the hard part

dragging my ass the past couple weeks. some new meds made me sick but im jumping back on the bike sunday/recolored my hair to feel pretty

Also, having a nicer environment can help with mood & motivation. My thoughts & feelings are only as peaceful & orderly as my surroundings.

Hell, even just taking a shower can be an accomplishment. I’ve been there before sadly.

The hardest part about going to the gym is actually getting to the gym.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Definitely. I try to keep myself to a schedule and stay productive when I can. Free time is where it gets tricker

@OP A take a walk outside and use my phone to write down a fantasy story :) your getting health & doing something fun/constructive :)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

i feel you @OP! a good trick is to make your bed in the morning. takes no time and makes you feel accomplished!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How long have you stayed awake over the past few days? How long have you had this energy?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yay! Cleaning can be so cathartic. I reccomended listening to a good audibook. Makes the time and the task fly by.

You are literally defeating Entropy.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Podcasts are nice too if you’re into them!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'll try that. I usually listen to music but I've thought about getting into audio books

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just keep in mind that not all audiobooks are created equally. A good narrator will make a world of difference. Good luck!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Good point. I'll try to keep that in mind. Do you have any recommendations?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What kind of books do you like? If you are a Harry Potter fan I'd suggest starting there. It's very comforting to listen to.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I recommend the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. Truly wonderful books if you enjoy fantasy books. Wizard's First Rule is the first.
