A movie where you can see Neo, Iron Man and Alex Jones as cartoons
ImALagomorphSam
Except that Alex wasn't acting.
SamsonHaveland
Yes I do. Linklater brought the book to screen in a truly faithful manner. One of the best adaptations to date.
nalananda
Absolute cult classic

Holy shit, I'm in the middle of this book. I had no idea it was a movie
DeviantPhuq
Remember Waking Life?
XAMANDER
Is that the one about lucid dreaming?
arewenotkingsandqueenstogether
Yah, I still use the lightswitch and electronics trick to tell if I'm dreaming.
Yeah, a trick I use is everytime you sit down to eat when you're awake ask yourself if you're dreaming. Since you dream a lot about food---
and eating you will ask yourself this in your dreams as well. Sometimes triggering a lucid dream and becoming aware you're dreaming.
Adato88
Great film, traced over frame by frame. Rotoscoped films are no easy feat. Should give “Waking Life” a watch. Weird philosophical film

They said it was a 15 speed bike. This gear has 5 and this one has 3. What do you think they did with the other 7?
alsoAzrael
I remember laughing my ass off reading that scene in the book.
Crittathelion
I never understood the point of that scene until I was older. Didn’t get the point of showing junkies doing junkie shit
CheerfullRain
We gotta rescue the orphaned gears, man!!
hillbillyal
Some of my favorite movies are Phillip K Dick adaptations. Minority report. Blade Runner. Love good sci fi.
Snotty128
The thing I loved so much about this one was that it was so so close to the book. The others tend to be ‘inspired by..’.
kennybcookin
Don't forget Total Recall.
filben7
We can remember it for you, wholesale.
We can, and we will.

Radio Free Albemuth was a good adaptation also.

This guy...
Yes, absolutely. It's watching a dream, it doesn't have to be perfect because it's up to YOU what to think at the end unlike hollywood flick
JudgementalChair
I need to go back and re-watch this. Being a dumbass kid I agreed to go see it high and never knew what was going on
CaptainHollister
Watching this stoned was amazing

Sassmachine
This might be one of the few books PKD wrote while not high.
poopydrugshits
That’s how I see every movie
Leithoa
It took seeing the movie to understand the ending of the book. I'm a bit thick sometimes.
Bricklemeyer
I found the book a lot easier to follow. It helps to know what Arctor and Bob actually know, and the bit where they finally diverge and -
Bob gets paranoid about being surveiled is trippier in the book.
2graves
Dick can be tough to understand sometimes. One of my favorites though
possumattack
Phrasing.
LordoftheLulz
I thought I was the only one haha. Dozens of us!
marsilies
To be fair, the movie adds the Winona Ryder scene that explains it.
TheFontSnob
The book was amazing and creepy enough that I avoided the film. I didn't need the story twice.
the hollywood adaptation was full of passive conditioning regarding acceptance of the patriot act. You didn't need the movie.

Something about rotoscoping always tripped my disgust button. I'm not sure why.
Rotoscoping is the name of the name of the technique. Also:

Yep, i need to watch it again soon.

It's offputting for the first few minutes, but I feel it's far more memorable for it.
Full on Roto there, was the first big project for many of the animators working as leads
bluefire3648
One of my college professors worked on it which is kinda cool

It has Alex Jones freaking out, what are you waiting for?
Seriously? That movie is from 2001 he’s been crazy that long?
It’s great! I have watched it a lot. I think lit helped inspire lucid dreams
xmsbeanx
The movie Waking Life was animated like this in 2001. I think that's where they got the idea. Both films are great, odd but great.
They're both the same director, Richard Linklater
