Meh, it's a fluke of history that the US was involved in the war at all. They were content to sit out the war and profit until the Japanese forced their hand - ironically in an attack designed to keep them out of the war.
Ideologically they had more in common with the axis than they did the allies - still do.

Not sure why you're downvoted, it isn't too far off. America First was closely linked to the Nazis and fascism, and was incredibly popular. The Nazis flat out took a lot of pages from their playbook on how the USA did things.
Don't get me wrong, I am glad that the USA did the right thing, but it's been a long time since they did the right thing since. And that is a truly sad thing.

I used to feel like it was a specially American value that Democracy was unambiguously revered over Fascism/Dictatorships. I'm an early Millennial. After the last 10 years, it seems obviously false - a millions-strong chunk of the American people clearly don't give two shits about it. My brother in military history, that statement applies to *EVERY* country. Many of Napoleon's marshals were idiots. The entire Franco-Prussian War. Every single Allied nation in WW2 was full of bickering fools who cared more about ego than winning. And let's not even *talk* about the dysfunction that was the German or Japanese command structure.
What you are describing is normalcy. Winning is about who screws up the LEAST.

Several of them, yes. But his ego was HUUUUGE before that. He and Patton HATED each other, and at one point he had a shitload of gold braid and medals until someone told him Patton only had the minimum, then he settled for the scrambled eggs on his hat. His ego is what lost the Philippines, too.

Didn't help he lost most of his aircraft by keeping them on the ground so the Japanese could blow them up. The Japanese airfields had been covered in fog and they were delayed in taking off. MacArthur refused to let his planes take off and they got blown to shit.

I will note that Marshall did say that the US intended that Japan take the first overt act, but setting up his force to be destroyed in situ was incompetence.
A note that every other commander on 12/7 was relieved of command, MacArthur wasn't and I don't know why.

Patton and MacArthur were both tactically good officers, the problem with both is they thought they were gods.
If I had to choose who to serve under, 100% of the time I would pick Omar Bradley... TBH, I would pick Bradley over any WW2 General.
But the list of incompetent US Generals is a long one, going way beyond WW2... the worst General in US Army history is Westmoreland, without a doubt.

The USA won WW II on the backs of allied information and cryptography, and anyone who tells you differently hasn't done enough research on WW II cryptography and secret communications. The fact that MacArthur managed to fuck up as badly as he did when we had already cracked the German and Japanese cyphers (Enigma and Indigo or Shark respectively, iirc?) really should have seen him courtmartialed.

Decryption of Japanese code, JN-25 was via Magic out of Station Hypo definitely won the Battle of Midway,
But WW2 cryptography is more famous for what it missed.... like the Battle of Ardennes Forest (aka Battle of the Bulge); the miss at the Battle of Leyte Gulf (and Halsey leaving the landing site unprotected to be attacked by the Japanese off Samar and a couple of destroyers going head to head with Yamato and scaring it off).

Breaking Cryptography is a trap... cuz you get amazing intelligence, but you are almost always heavily restricted on using it.
We got lucky at Midway that the Japanese didn't figure out why we there (blame Victory Disease and the IJN's inability to self-assess) and change their codes... and they didn't stop using JN-25 until their cities glowed.
Hell, we planned a to-the-minute assassination of Yamamoto based soley on Magic intercepts and knowing what time his plane would be in the area.

My grandpa spent 2 years in a German camp after getting shot down. He had a German last name, so they gave him extra special treatment. All he had to say about it was, "the Germans are not nice people.".

What did he tell you about it ? Can you share a story ?
My grandfather went to the Maginot Line in 1939, then was captured in 1940 and sent as a Prisoner of War in Germany, and then went back to his small city in western France for the rest of the war. He told stories about how it was hard to find metal (he was a motorbike mechanic) and fuel, so when a plane had been shot, he'd go nightly to steal metal from the wreck. Another time he brought a huge german shell unexploded after a bombing.

Captured at St Nazaire ("The Greatest Raid of All"), was a mechanic on one of the first boats to get hit. Spent the years studying and teaching Engineering. Went on to a highly successful life - when the Queen heard he had cancer, she threw a Garden Party so she could Knight him - died 6 months later, aged 62. Last words "Too Soon".

My grandfather was part of the artillery unit that landed in Normandy after the initial wave. He had amazing stories, but the pictures he had of liberating the concentration camps would tear your heart out. He would talk about how they would try and feed them their rations, but the "survivors" couldn't keep anything down.
I can't imagine how he'd feel seeing the Israeli government's actions today.

You know, my friend, i'm quite terrified about next WW (hopefully never) because during the last one, we saw such a level of atrocities (the Shoah, the mass bombings on civilian cities, huge scale organized massacres, and finally Hiroshima + Nagasaki...) that i fear it would be even worse, like not millions of casualities, but billions. And high toxic damage for a long time for the survivors. Who said "atomic WW3 ? Then the next one will be with stones & clubs".
