Helping people out is a lot of work at the start... I think of this a lot. Many people who are homeless or addicts or ex-prison... are those struggling with literacy or mental disorders, who may not have ID, like birth certificates or drivers licence, which stops them accessing help. Training them to help each other and helping educate them to a liveable level and getting them basic medical and dental care would make a phenomenal difference even before you get to your 1st step.

When they come up with their prices they pretty much factor in getting paid fractions of it. Example on conversion a church just purchased 3 million of medical debt for $15,000 .

It's part of why an insurance driven healthcare is broken. The prices of medicines and procedures are artificially inflated because hospitals know that a lot of what they do ultimately won't be covered. As opposed to a single payer healthcare system, where what's covered and what's not is a lot more predictable.

Being owed X money is almost never worth paying X money for (that's the principal reason why loans charge interest). The exact exchange rate depends on lots of details. It being distributed over thousands if not millions of debtors is certainly one such factor.

The problem is the disconnect between the voting public and the elected officials. They may be on the same page when they're getting elected, but as soon as they're in office and worried about their reelection, they get on the take, and people with money now influence directly their votes when it flies in the face of their constituency

The crazy thing is that if you did this, and called/mailed the person with the debt, they'd think you are a debt collector or a scam. I've though about this, because it's top of my list. Trying to actually figure out what the smallest amount of medical debt I can buy is, because I believe it sells for pennies on the dollar. If I could spend $30 to wipe out $1,000, I'd have a new hobby.

The main issue with that idea is I believe that even though you buy it for pennies on the dollar, you still need to spend thousands to purchase any debt. Also don't forget that in some situations (many?) debt forgiveness can be counted as income so you may stick people with a big tax bill

Exactly. Don't buy medical debt. I'd rather use half of that money to invest and then use the excess to run a foundation for preventative medicine. That's the major difference btw east and western medicine. It's why theyre healthier and living longer lives than Americans. Part of that is also due to more natural ingredients as well - why hot cheetos and most American snacks are banned.

I can actually just buy a small part of American stuff like reeses cups and poptarts at local stores here in NL, EU. But the people here are probably more aware of what is healthy or not and use things like sugar more moderately. We also combine that with unprocessed and natural foods that are way easier to get in the EU. Here a McDonalds menu is (still) more expensive than natural foods in the supermarkets. Its a luxury food here more or less.
