I've been in and out of community college for the past 10 years (life, ya know.) But now I'm able to go back and finish my associates degree, all that stands between me and that is Statistics. Even worse, it's an online class which historically, has not worked for me. I have a learning disability in math, as well as ADHD-PI, so if I'm not sitting in a class, it's very hard for me to focus. I've talked with disability services and have accommodations (extra time on tests is all I get for online.)
Just screaming into the void, I know this is probably going to end badly and I'm not sure if I should just wait until next semester to get an in person class..

Look up professor ratings and even consider taking it at another community college (check if it counts) if it's a good teacher. Another community college could have it in person, if you are able to travel. Go to your teacher's office hours early in the semester and often to form a relationship before problems come up. There are many more tools you can use, these are just a few quick ideas. Good luck!

If it makes you feel better I failed statistics the first time around - it seemed incomprehensible and I guess I didn't try (the instructor was apparently a genius at statistics but a terrible teacher which didn't help.)The second time around I approached it with determination and got the highest grade in the class.Don't give up! In my experience if it's taught as pure maths exercise it's gonna suck but if it is a set of tools for real applications it makes more sense. As for plenty of examples!

honestly i found stats to be the easiest. You can rationalize it and visualize it, unlike more "pure" forms of math like linear algebra

My oldest daughter had hell with statistics until she stumbled across Krish Nail’s series of videos on YouTube. Some of them are for machine learning, but a bunch of them are basic explanations. She got an 88 in the class (up from a 63 on the first test…).

Only reason I passed Stats was that I had already been gathering information for what turned out to be my final project (the Scrabble scores from games between me and my GF) for years. I just didn't see its value as project material until that semester. Both of us were "re-entry" students, 20 years out. So I measured our respective scores while IN school and out, & found that both of our scores were better when we were attending college courses. Professor LOVED that, I passed with a C minus.

Get a tutor. Be there for every TAs office hours. It's free tutoring. By "every" I mean both every office hour and also every TA. Most TAs will help ANY instructors student. Why is this a good tip? Because learning Stat is a process of not getting it combined with "ah hah" moments. What shortens the stuck part is hearing the same confusing thing put in different ways. Plan study partners & study groups too.

Former statistics tutor here: break every problem down to its simplest component, and build up from there. Also, it's better to do a little bit every day rather than marathon cram sessions. Don't be afraid to ask for help, go to office hours, or set up a study group. With hard work and discipline, anyone can pass stat.

PhD in stats, here. The best way I found to teach stats was to explain 'why'. The how comes with practice. I always warned my class that they would throw the book and curse my name, but in the end, at least leaving with the basic knowledge of how stats work and get abused counts as a win.

Also, ask questions, especially if you know where you are stuck. Even if it's to the strangers on the internet like me. You will crush it if you show any instructor worth their salt that you're trying.

Khan academy. It's how I was able to pass calculus 1210 & 1220 after 10 years away from math and initially, not even being able to describe what a function was in Algebra. It helped me relearn a TON and come into class understanding things a ton better.

That's the trick about stats - our brains are all really shit at intuiting them. It's one of the more nefarious ways businesses take advantage of humans for profit - the math works out but since it doesn't make intuitive sense to us, we fall for it over and over.

Annoying thing about statistics it it has bunches of techniques that all look kinda the same but work a bit different to each other. So the tendency is to go "yeah yeah, same old, same old" and not take it in. So probably the way to go is somehow exaggerate differences, make silly rhymes and crap.

Honestly, I have no idea. I’m sure I t would be different amounts in different schools and different subjects, etc. It just seems silly to pay an arm and a leg just to have to pay another person to help pass to get a piece of paper.

Well, it's just that stats makes no sense to me like other maths have. I'm much better at remembering formulas and whatnot, stats is like trying to translate a foreign language without a key or translator.

I got an A in stats in undergrad and grad school, and at no point felt like it made any sense whatsoever. Felt like passing Spanish without actually knowing what any of the words meant. Just knowing what sounds to parrot back when.

I also have adhd. Statistics was insanely difficult for me the first time around. The second time I took it, I got an A. It’s way easier than it seems at first, it’s just a pain in the balls. Just create cheat sheets for yourself

I have adhd and majored in math. A lot of stats is filled with arbitrary rules that don't some one just decided sound nice and went with it. Why is .05 significant? Seemed good enough. You just have to accept it and memorize it. Probability is often counterintuitive no matter who you are. You just need to practice it until it makes sense.

Hopefully a new teacher? Got lucky with a few and found out math actually made sense of it was taught in a very specific way. Actually if you need any help I'd be happy to field questions as you go through the class. Stats was a while ago but I think I still have the basic idea. As a neurodivergent myself I may be able to rephrase for you.

@op this, I'm neurodivergent as well and I had many undergrad and grad stats classes that were taught horribly. I tried a bunch of solutions until some worked, so I might be able to point you in the right direction at least

That's actually what tutors are great for. They help you figure out why it doesn't make sense and how to make it make sense to you because they've worked with all types of people whose brains approach the subject differently. Once you get it to "click", you'll all of a sudden understand the whole subject way better

You may need to try different tutors, too. I used to tutor Algebra and one of the kindest things said to me was like, "Wow, you explain this so differently from the teacher, I think I get it." Helped me realize that different people need different teaching styles. You can do it, you may just need the person that shows it in a new way! Good luck!

You never know. Math is, ultimately, a matter of *understanding* what's going on. It makes zero sense until you actually *understand*, but once you do it's pretty easy. Full disclosure, coming at this from the opposite angle, math has always been easy for me.

It's probably something more fundamental than this, but math *also* makes no sense if you don't know *all* of the bits that the math you're learning is built on. Calculus wouldn't have made a damn lick of sense to me if I hadn't done Algebra first. Any chance there's something specific that you keep tripping over that you could go back and re-learn?

Give yourself some grace, it is a very weird form of math. Create all the cheat sheets you need to help it start to make sense.

I took stats online and didn't find out till the end, that a ti 83 can do most of the math for you. I was doing it by hand. Good luck!

Oh wow, when.i said found out, i meant found out I was supposed to be using a ti 83- which is a graphing calculator. Like- the professor told me! I was using a scientific calculator, an Itty bitty. And it was a huge difference, just plug stuff in, tell it which statistical analysis to do, and bang.
