Yeah, if you saw the description, it doesn't say "made" it says "designed" meaning it's probably someone's pipe dream by theoretical numbers
Also, because of widespread adoption of Jet A or Jet A-1, turbines will continue to get optimized specifically for those fuels
And jet fuel (which is a lot like kerosene) is taxed differently (if at all).

thickest hemp fiber least tensile strength (250 MPa) has more than the variety of steel with the least tensile strength (150 MPa).
Marsupialmessiah
And 7071 has a tensile strength of 572 mPa which makes hemp pale in comparison
Doompug
I think you mean 572 MPa
Polskifiat126p7
Talking about UTS is all by itself is a bit of a problem. Tool steels are in 5200 mpa 750ksi range. I wouldn't make a vehicle out of that.
As tool steels achieve that strength by sacrificing other properties like, ductility and fracture toughness. Aerospace steels typically,
Can get up to 260-300 KSI UTS without sacrificing too much on other properties.
DucktruckOG
I'd like to see a transverse tensile test for hemp fibers, or a charpy. Just so we get apples to apples. Whats the AMS spec for hemp again?
Planes are not made of steel tho, they use Al 7071 stregth not being the only important characteristic for a plane, flexibility is more impo
Oh sure. I love carbon fibre. But the text in the image said "10x steel".
bigguywhokills
AL 7071 is an Aluminum alloy, not carbon fiber: http://www.aircraft-grade-aluminum.com/aerospace-aircraft-grade-aluminum-sheets-bar-block/

enferno8
I would start with matweb.
Thinnest fibers of hemp with the maximum tensile strength (4200 MPa) stronger thansteel variety with the highest tensile strength (3000 MPa)
Where did you get your numbers? You are way off from what Perrys lists for structural and hardened carbon steel.
BryanTenn
Material strength is more than just tensile strength. Modulus of Elasticity is a better scale imo. And I bet raw hemp fibers are almost zero
iamthemansheep
The article says "hemp fiber composite" so think carbon fiber or fiberglass but with hemp instead
I doubt the strength by weight comparison includes the polymer binder.
This from a website that, if biased, will be biased in favour of hemp. It's a bit stronger than steel, but not 10x.
OmnesMundiLardum
That strength is only in one direction, and only in tension. Outside of all the other factors that go into material selection for planes.
ThePunishersVengefulBrother
Carbon fiber is 7000 MPa, for reference.
JaceTiger
Might be "strongest hemp vs weakest steel"

Also, tensile strength is great, but it's only one factor - steel's way stronger in most else

By killing the hemp industry a bunch of rich fucks could control lots of industries the most useful plant on earth would've dominated. 1/

The problem with these "x times stronger" statements is that materials have diffenent "strength" properties that exclude each other.
Bmxrider70763
Yes, things like tensile strength, ductility, and brittleness all have to be taken into account when considering a material for construction
Mack1986
Hence why aluminum is used instead of steel... you need flex

It sounds like an unrealized concept, note that it says they designed it, not that they built it.
Evi1Gav
Given we don't make planes out of steel, it also feels pretty redundant.
PlaidBastard
Translated: [allegedly] hemp can apparently be a fiber reinforcement for space-age epoxy to reach similar numbers as with non-kevlar nylon.
MysteriousAsTheDarksideOfTHEMOOOOOOOOOOON
Ford made this a long time ago and said the same thing
basiccricket8444
That was soybeans wants it?
MysteriousAsTheDarksideOfTHEMOOOOOOOOOOON
No it was hemp
basiccricket8444
We are both right!
dudechaos
Correct. They did soy beans. I don't remember the hemp specifically but everyone has experimented with hemp.
drowninginthesouth
It's as strong as the binder it's mixed with.
xyxyxyxy31
Anfalicious
I have a hemp plastic yidaki, it can't really get wet. Guess it's come a ways in the last twenty years.
TheobromineAddict
That's a didgeridoo? How do you play it without breath moisture?
Anfalicious
It's been rained on before, dropped in a river. The sense I got was don't let it live in a damp place, or get soaked.
Anfalicious
It'll delaminate apparently.
skwint
thickest hemp fiber least tensile strength (250 MPa) has more than the variety of steel with the least tensile strength (150 MPa).
Polskifiat126p7
As tool steels achieve that strength by sacrificing other properties like, ductility and fracture toughness. Aerospace steels typically,
Polskifiat126p7
Can get up to 260-300 KSI UTS without sacrificing too much on other properties.
DucktruckOG
I'd like to see a transverse tensile test for hemp fibers, or a charpy. Just so we get apples to apples. Whats the AMS spec for hemp again?
Marsupialmessiah
Planes are not made of steel tho, they use Al 7071 stregth not being the only important characteristic for a plane, flexibility is more impo
skwint
Oh sure. I love carbon fibre. But the text in the image said "10x steel".
bigguywhokills
AL 7071 is an Aluminum alloy, not carbon fiber: http://www.aircraft-grade-aluminum.com/aerospace-aircraft-grade-aluminum-sheets-bar-block/
donsterkay
source?
enferno8
I would start with matweb.
skwint
Thinnest fibers of hemp with the maximum tensile strength (4200 MPa) stronger thansteel variety with the highest tensile strength (3000 MPa)
Marsupialmessiah
Where did you get your numbers? You are way off from what Perrys lists for structural and hardened carbon steel.
BryanTenn
Material strength is more than just tensile strength. Modulus of Elasticity is a better scale imo. And I bet raw hemp fibers are almost zero
iamthemansheep
The article says "hemp fiber composite" so think carbon fiber or fiberglass but with hemp instead
BryanTenn
I doubt the strength by weight comparison includes the polymer binder.
skwint
This from a website that, if biased, will be biased in favour of hemp. It's a bit stronger than steel, but not 10x.
OmnesMundiLardum
That strength is only in one direction, and only in tension. Outside of all the other factors that go into material selection for planes.
ThePunishersVengefulBrother
Carbon fiber is 7000 MPa, for reference.
JaceTiger
Might be "strongest hemp vs weakest steel"
DoWGray
Also, tensile strength is great, but it's only one factor - steel's way stronger in most else
NotABot6969420
I appreciate you mentioned the possible bias of the website, not many do. Hats off to you sir
Atomic2
Thats cool and all but we don't make airplanes from steel.
dontevenknowwhy
Last time I heard jet fuel and steel together in a sentence, shit did go too well
Unholytrashpanda
That's what I was gonna say
MushroomFiend
I mean, the Mig-25 is mostly steel, but that's mostly an outlier.
FluffiestRhino
VaultGirl69
All good points. I like seeing people learn new things from doubt rather than taking every image as gospel. ?
mikeatike
But you don't make airplanes out of low grade steel.
JayEnfield
mikeatike
I stand corrected.
SunsGettinReaLow
Oh I love this.
SirSparblington
Comrade...
Tomcruiseisinyoursockdrawer
By killing the hemp industry a bunch of rich fucks could control lots of industries the most useful plant on earth would've dominated. 1/
Tomcruiseisinyoursockdrawer
(Oil, steel, textiles, paper, etc) So maybe it is, pound for pound. /2
Adester
The problem with these "x times stronger" statements is that materials have diffenent "strength" properties that exclude each other.
Bmxrider70763
Yes, things like tensile strength, ductility, and brittleness all have to be taken into account when considering a material for construction
Mack1986
Hence why aluminum is used instead of steel... you need flex
Tomcruiseisinyoursockdrawer
I'm assuming you have more knowledge than me and therefore agree you're correct.
clawthewolf
The most important ones being Tensile (resist being pulled apart), compressive (resist being crushed), and shear (resist being ripped paper
WhyWouldIUseMyRealNick
Sp there is some global conspiracy against hemp?
Tomcruiseisinyoursockdrawer
Is it a conspiracy if no one really conspired? There was a lot of lobbying during the early twentieth century to make it illegal.
WhyWouldIUseMyRealNick
Who was lobbying in my country? If it really was superior, do you really think no one would have used it already?
MikeReese9
Especially introducing the word ‘marijuana’ along with racism into the matter. And shifting from telling people it would make you wild and
