Juan Carlos Rodriguez Romero was driving to a DoorDash shift when an ICE agent shot at him, and the government charged him with assaulting its agents.

That was four days before Christmas. DHS claimed he rammed federal vehicles, and prosecutors stacked felony charges carrying 20 years. The case survived more than five months, until five of the six agents on the scene contradicted the official story and the Justice Department quietly dropped it this week. He is not an outlier. The government's own watchdog reported that its largest detention camp destroyed evidence in a homicide and denied prisoners treatment for diabetes and HIV.

The same day the watchdog's findings landed, the House voted by a margin of two to write a $70 billion check anyway, funding ICE and the Border Patrol through 2029. Nothing else in your government gets guaranteed funding for three years. The agency that shoots at delivery drivers and lies about it just did.

There's a difference between being able to get data, and having all of everyone's data. Also, the telecoms haven't been very good at safeguarding the data they already have on us from hackers or the government.

Agreed. Side note how TF does a little symbol on an ID help when the person is unresponsive due to hearing loss or runs away or any of the millions of other things that happen before an ID even show up? Training cops better seems to be the true answer but what the fuck do I know...

Did you read the article? From it, I gleaned that lots of marylanders are excited to be able to be recognized in the situations where they do present ID to first responders. And it points out that training must happen in tandem

I did, eugenics has a way of convincing folks its not eugenics though and these 'lots' of folks are just the most recent victims of that. Or they are short sighted parents of disabled children, they don't know what they don't know. But they should be horrified.

Here's some more Fighting Back we can do. The EPA is proposing a rule change that would allow developers to begin constructing non-emitting building elements- concrete pads, walls, piping, etc. - before full federal air permits have been granted. A large portion of the project could be built while the permit for generators is under review. Basically, “build first, permit later”. As an American, I remain utterly baffled. The values demonstrated proudly by the right are diametrically opposite the values I was taught. I did work for an aboriginal corporation several years ago and was horrified to learn that the government was still kidnapping children to 'raise them white' up until 1976. I'd heard of the stolen generation before then but assumed that was some 1940's thing.

#15 - From my understanding, nitrogen is very dangerous because your body isn't even aware that it's not getting enough oxygen. It's the same as helium, which is why you see videos of people inhaling helium and passing out with no physical reaction. Nitrogen should be a completely safe execution choice. I believe they're only arguing to extend his life.

You're right; your body can only sense too much CO2 so you'd simply feel sleepy until your death. While I'm not a proponent of executions the method does sound preferable.

You're forgetting the human survival instinct. The person being executed will hold their breath. Instictively. Their mind won't let them breathe, just like it doesn't let you bite off your own finger or tongue. And then they suffocate slowly and painfully.

No. At worst they will hold their breath until they pass out and then they will resume breathing normally and suffocate painlessly. Ideally I'd assume you would start with an oxygen mixture and then slowly reduce it and the brain/body can't tell the difference. It's vastly more humane than any other method of execution used at any point in human history so far.

First, "safe" isn't a useful qualifier here. Safe for who? Next, someone puts that mask on you. You know your next breath will be your last. What do you do? You hold your breath. Instinctively. Your mind won't let you breathe, just like it won't let you bite off your own finger or tongue. It takes incredible mental strength to just keep breathing normally when you know your next breath will be your last. So what will happen instead is that you will suffocate, which is a slow and (1/2>>)

(>>2/2) painful process and can take easily 15 to 30 minutes. So what this is isn't the humane execution method you think it is, it's asking someone to either actively kill themselves by keeping breathing, or suffer a torturous and painful death if they are mentally unable to do that. If you want to kill someone quickly, you can't rely on that person's participation for the process to be quickly, you have to do it in a way that kills quickly either way. Or just stop executing people.

You're entire argument, until the last sentence, is wildly assumptive and not in alignment with actual research or other outcomes. It would also be relatively simple to sedate someone before putting the mask on and thus bypassing the concern you are worried about. But your last sentence is the most accurate, the death penalty is unjust and disproportionately applied and should not exist anywhere.

Alright, I'm happy to change my opinion based on factual research. What are the DOIs or standard references (Author(s), Journal, Year) of the studies you're referring to and what are the specific other outcomes you're referring to?
