Trying to convince you that less pay is a GOOD thing. The sheer contempt for your intelligence is palpable.

Seriously, anyone with even half of a working brain should be able to figure out that if prices aren't coming down NOW, they're going to not come down at the same rate, or even slower, after workers get a small pay raise.

I can't believe they still expect people to believe that inflation is in any way tied to wages, especially when they've proven so many times in recent years that the don't even have to justify raising prices, and could just say "Prices are going up because we want more money."

And THAT would at least be honest.

The oligarchs are trying to keep us riding the razor's edge between too desperate to lose what little we have, and so desperate we don't have anything left to lose.

As a uni educated economist, let me just say: fuck all things finance. Your sector’s carcinogenic greed is the source of most problems in the world.

Politico was acquired by Axel Springer SE in 2021. In case you don't know what that is, they also own 'Die Welt', 'Fakt' and 'Bild'. That last one being the largest rightwing, 'unpolitical' (aka extremist) yellow press garbage Germany has to offer. Springer has "alledged" (wink wink nudge nudge) monetary ties to the CIA, their ceo frequents meetings with the top of extremist rightwing party AfD and they had cases of sexual misconduct among their top staff.

So that headline is not surprising.

The only thing that might maybe bring prices down is a boycott, especially of "name brands."

New article: "Fewer sales could be a good thing for businesses because as true capitalists, they'll have to lower prices due to low demand, which will mean more people can afford to buy products and CEOs wont be guillotined." Not expecting it, though.

1 week ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's the Axel Springer SE for you. Their founder was the German Rupert Murdoch. They publish a bunch of right-wing rags in Germany and acquired Politico a couple of years ago, so propaganda like this was to be expected.

1 week ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Ahhh, that's what happened. I noticed it was getting worse and worse so I just stopped going to Politico, didn't know the reason though.

And Van Zandt the lying piece of shit still rates the site as left-biased, just like NYT and WaPo and all the other billionaire-owned right-wing outlets. Gotta keep the myth of the "liberal media" alive.

it has not, in fact, been a good thing for workers

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ye cuz as we all know companies always lower their prices to match the average workers income

I encourage everyone to email them your opinion; newsrelease@politico.com

Better to ask have they ever lowered prices to match income.... Or really anything.

1 week ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

The Great Depression. Basically whenever you read in history about depressions or panics (the old fashioned word for depression), prices dropped severely. Ever since the Great Depression, governments and central banks have worked to not let negative inflation happen because it actually shrinks the entire economy and makes the economic impact worse.

Inflation isn't a bad thing, too much inflation is, but negative inflation is also a bad thing, you really want between 0-2% annual inflation.

Prices can go down? Now I've heard everything

1 week ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Not below pre covid levels though.

6 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I mean, even if the companies would reduce the price of their products exactly by the amount of its lowered labour costs, the whole argument only makes sense to begin with in a universe, where the labour costs for a product make up more than 100% of its sales price (yeah, the assumption is as stupid as it sounds). Otherwise, the relative price reduction will always be smaller than the salary reduction and the workers can effectively buy less stuff.

Pay raises already weren't keeping up with inflation, so the question, as always, is "Where is all that money going?"

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Into pockets that are already stuffed with our money.

1 week ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wages have remained flat for decades and we're still paying double what we paid just a few years ago. Maybe it isn't wages that are raising prices... Slave wage paying employers, 'Ha! You obviously know nothing about Trickle Down Economics! LOOK! Iran want's to nuke America!''...

1 week ago | Likes 65 Dislikes 1

hey, at least then they actually have some incentive to pay you enough to survive, or at least take care of your basic needs. since apparently, they don't have to do that now and can simply expect you to work multiple different jobs.

They are really trying to port all your job relevant information into an Ai and put you out to pasture. They have no interest in paying the medical costs necessitated by chattle slavery.

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is something I really wish the US in particular but political discourse in general really needs to get its head around, and i’m gonna put it in all caps: TAX CUTS DON’T MEAN SHIT. At least not to you, the average person. And this shit is why. Taxes go down, you have more money, company doesn’t need to give you as big a raise. Within a few years it’s like it never happened.

1 week ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 1

Except you don't really have more money, if you don't make a lot to begin with. Can you even notice a few hundred dollars over the course of the year?

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It seems to be the case in the US indeed.
But don't put us all in the same basket. Having yearly raise is a right in my Belgium, tax cuts or no tax cuts.

1 week ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

to be clear it’s not whether or not there’s a raise, but how much. Market forces dictate wages, are workers getting the standard of living they expect from the job, etc. That’s defined by after tax income and the economy as a whole, and it adjusts pretty quickly when tax rates change.

1 week ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, it happened in the sense that they cut government services to pay for it, I guess. But it never happened in the sense that people are no better off.

Take home pay, government services, the price of goods. These are the things that dictate how well off the average person feels, but all anyone in politics ever pitches is tax cuts.

1 week ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I dunno, the Wall Street Journal assured me that the average American worker is really most concerned with the Dow & top marginal tax rates.

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

oh well if it was in a newspaper, never mind I guess.

They certainly won’t tell you that raises go *up* after a tax increase, oh no.
