One fun thing I noticed is that if you throw a dummy grenade (that's very obviously a dummy - i.e. painted bright yellow - during a dummy grenade -throwing exercise where everyone knows there is not a live grenade anywhere in the vicinity) in the wrong direction (at everyone else standing BEHIND you), people with proper training will react exactly as they would if it were a real live grenade. In my defence it was really slippery what with the sandy glove and all but yeah I also suck at throwing.

Inert means the fuses was removed from the base of the frag,my brother used to work in the armory and he explained that the "handle &spoon" and the base of the nade are separate and screwing them together makes a live nade. My theory is they were told it was inert but didn't account for the blast powder and just the fuses were gone so the officers cut the nade with a electronic saw creating a spark activates the gunpowder and poof.

There was a cop in the news for abusing people earlier this year who was said to be getting $125K a year from one department. Seen some others like that, too. My guess? Either it was something someone made with a grenade shell and gunpowder (sort of a fancy pipe bomb), or saw meets primary explosive in the fuze -> boom.

It's an important difference though–high explosive, the stuff in grenades, doesn't go off by sparks or heat, it takes a smaller explosion to set it off. You can literally light a brick of C-4 on fire and it'll just sit there and cheerfully burn to ash, no boom.
My bet is the cutting set off the detonator, which is a much less stable compound that can be triggered by a spark.

No, but it’s not normal to just find a grenade either. It’s a bomb used by soldiers to kill people, with enough explosives inside to fill a room with shrapnel (very fast and jagged little pieces of metal). So because it was so unusual, I guess they cut the grenade open to get the explosives out, or just to see what it looked like inside. But this was a stupid and dangerous thing to try, and they died doing it. Stupid but also sad
