It's why I get so annoyed with all the "it's a new thing, we don't have any historic sources from more than 50 years ago". Correct, because the most extensive library on the subject ever created was deliberately and systematically destroyed by the Nazis. We're still decades away from getting back to where we were in 1933 for information.

I find it weird when people say stuff like "we're decades away from getting back to where we were." Is there actual evidence that they had more understanding of LGBT people than we do today? I find it hard to believe.
Don't get me wrong I think we could have progressed faster if we didn't have setbacks like the loss of that research, it's just the idea of them knowing more in the 30s than we do today that I question

They burnt one off manuscripts from the 17th and 18th century. The library was put together over nearly 50 years, collecting rare works from around the world in one place. Today, that knowledge is more fragmented, and no single person is trying to manage it and research in a structured manner.
It's not just collecting this together again, it's recreating studies and research.

Actual question at the time were they books on transgender or more human sexuality (either way nazis were beyond horrible to anyone non cis). More just surprised that in era it could have been recognized as trans granted even in Greek mythology women prayed and became men so it's not that outlandish.

Hirschfeld coined the term "transvestite" (literally cross dresser) in 1910.
While today it's a dated term for a cross-dresser, Hirschfeld used it more broadly (as you'd expect for a pioneer in this research) to include people we'd today identify distinctly as cross-dressers, nonbinary, trans, genderqueer, pangender, drag performers, Butch/masc/femme, gay, and other terms.
This isn't us projecting back onto Hirschfeld, his scope was very comparable to modern sexology, with different terms.

It was both, there were books about human sexuality, but also books and studies specifically about the T part of LGBT

Cheers honestly been wondering how long ago the T part came into science. Mainly as at least in order to realize it beyond dressing the part some level of science/medicine would be involved. Which is to say the mental component has likely been there all along even if the treatments/understanding hasn't.
