UPDATE: went to dentist as soon as they opened, basically told me to go away and came back in 10 days.
UPDATE 2: called/ went to every dentist I could find in a 20 mile radius. Everyone said basically the same thing. Luckily, the patch that i got from walgreens has worked wonders. Combined with ibuprofen+acetaminophen the pain is effectively down to a 2/10. I can feel it, but it doesn't particularly hurt and can be ignored.
davebarton315101
Get some denture glue, it blocks the air and takes many hours to resolve
iamalampshade
I resorted to cheering handfuls of ice at one point. Worst pain ever. I've heard of oil pulling. I think it's basically using olive oil to suck on your teeth. Over the counter remedies until you're able to get into a dental chair sounds pretty grim. Good luck.
GBMaker
Using a toothbrush and toothpaste usually works to get rid of the pain for about a half an hour at a time.
cheeriossuckbecause7
Orajel(or equivalent) will help reduce the pain to a manageable level. Keep your ibuprofen intake steady, every 2/4/6 hours and make sure you're not missing a dosage. And keep calling around. Someone wants the money to fix your problem, count on it. I've been there, I feel the pain. Hope it gets better, soon. F'ing teeth.
Onebigcanuck
When I broke a tooth, Oragel and dental wax were what got me through until I could see a dentist.
Hexidimentional
Urgent care might help, if they're open, but yeah in my experiance only go to the ER if you're actively bleeding out, i went to the ER with a blood pressure of 180 and they waved me away, didnt take me seriously until i went back with a bp of 265
viva93
urgent cares won't help either and to their credit unfortunately. A lot of professionals loathe them and working at them because unfortunately a lot of people look at them as nearly pill farms. as a result most are reluctant to do anything perscription wise for pain, and even antibiotics unless there is very plainly a problem to avoid reducing the efficacy of anti biotics resistance. The pain medication problem is self answering however.
ToffeeFae
They have mouth numbers at 7/11 (probably most major corpos). It's REALLY good and saved me. I'm terribly sorry OP, good luck. <3
quietwalker
Oralgel is basically lidocane. It's gonna be the best you can do for now. It sucks, I know.
candar
sorry bout ur luxury bones
Juttypants
Stack Motrin and Tylenol . It's as good as a perc, but not as good as a perc. I do a 1-1 ratio for tooth pain. I.e. 4 motrin, 4 Tylenol.
CanYouSpellQuarantine
Nooooooo. Bad advice. That is too much Tylenol. It is possible to OD on Tylenol and give yourself liver failure. Stick with 4 tabs of ibuprofen + 2 tabs of Tylenol. You can stack that multiple times per day.
AvidApostate
Cough drops for topical on top of whatever OTC you choose.
Calistrasza
US healthcare sucks donkey balls. I live in a country with universal healthcare and even the private dentist I go to would never make me wait that long.
Servo87
If you're a pre-existing patient, a lot of dentists have emergency hours for this kind of thing. Otherwise, in major cities, hospitals have integrated dentists that can handle this kind of thing. Won't be done through the ER but you should be able to get in.
Servo87
Might also try looking for an endodontist office near you and see if they have an oncall for emergencies.
CALAMOSCOPYJANE
Just take some heroin. 😂
sometimesarobot
Some places have emergency dental places, I'd check for that.
Else take 4 ibuprofen and a tylenol (that mix worked when I had to deal with an abscessed tooth for a week)
Eidodk
I was about to warn for ibuprofen overdose, but then i remembered that the US only sell the 200mg variant over the counter. In Europe the OTC amount is 400mg, and your doctor will prescribe a 600mg variant just by you asking for it.
sometimesarobot
Tooth pain is worth the overdose
MaterialismBoy
Naproxen if you have a sensitive stomach, you can take less to the same effect
Callipygius
For anyone in the SF Bay area, fyi, the only emergency room in San Francisco that has dentists on staff is SF General Hospital. Not Kaiser, UCSF, Sutter, or anything else. At least that's what I've been told.
V65ozzie
I don't live in the US anymore. A few months ago I broke a tooth on a sunday morning. It was excruciating. I called our 111 number, They had me hooked up with an emergency dentists appointment in a matter of minutes, an hour later I was getting a tooth extracted. Total cost, out of pocket? Nothing.
V65ozzie
Socialized medicine is hard to do, only 32 out of the 33 developed nations in the world have been able to figure it out.
VodkaReindeer
You don't have dentists at the ER? That's where I was told to go when I said hot thing suddenly made my tooth ouchie.
MrsHowVeryDareYou
Shit, maybe I should try this. My tooth doesn’t hurt, but I wake up at a 4/10 in general.
LardogX
You know there are emergency dentists... right?
ActuallyTonyHawk
Rural USA. No, there's not.
Sendrax
When I cracked a tooth as a kid, my parents had me keep the root covered with sugar free gum till the dentist was open.
ChetinBey
I had a root canal get infected this summer, I’m a grown ass man and cried like a baby in the urgent care with my wife by my side. I feel your pain, and hope you get through it soon!
SMarkt
i remember having one of those too during the night. i hoped to get it under control with aspirin but at 3 am my whole head was a heavyly pumping pain. they got a night emergency service with dentist students running in hamburg eppendorf ger. and believe it or not, it was one of the most funny - and bizarre- nights in my whole life. sitting there with other people, each of us stinking in pain, waiting for a student to drill into our painful teeth, released some sort of crazy badass endorphine
Psyskwr
Oof... Completely soak a cotton ball with Anbesol or any brand of oral benzocaine. When i had a wisdom tooth problem being longer than the rest of my molars they ground it off, so i quit chewing myself open when eating. i had to wait a week with an exposed nerve before i could get in to the Maxifilifacial Surgeon to have it removed along with the 3 others that were impacted.
doonerpjenkins
ER: Just go buy drugs on any streetcorner in America like a normal person, it's cheaper anyway.
jetact12
Oragel,
AK90
Some years ago I had my root canal filling thingy come out a few days before Christmas. Had to eat Christmas dinner and all the tasty things with basically a hole in my tooth down to the root. It fucking sucked!
badgerZ505
Did you try clove oil? I know it sounds crazy but it usually helps.
charliechaplinslookalike
Tell me you’re from the USA without telling me
charondaboatman
Bourbon.
SMarkt
but only for desinfection purpose, right? - ONLY for desinfection, RIGHT???
SomeFukinWizard
It works until you start to sober up - but it works. I dehydrated myself for days once over a tooth until I got antibiotics. It was miserable - but also a bit of fun. Used alcohol as both a rinse, and a pain agent.
PandaStonetree
ER wont do anything for just pain. Its not life threatening and is just severe discomfort. Head over to store and get temp dental patch, Ambisol, and Ibuprofen. Plug the hole. It will greatly reduce the pain
BasinStreetDesign
Also shocking the gum with cold water every 2-3 minutes will kill the pain
doonerpjenkins
I wish I could give you an award for this. Also, this is why I squirrel away pain meds whenever I can. They are stingy and too paranoid to give them out anymore. I have a bottle of Tramadol in my first aid kit I kept from when a dog bit through the web of my hand and it got infected.
WellThatsOriginal
Dental wax is cheap, easy to find and works great!
FaeVikingPrincess
I have to get dental wax simply because my stupid teeth are ridiculously sharp. even the molars, and I thought it was from erosion or wear, but turns out, that's just how my teeth are
WellThatsOriginal

canadmos
Thats what I got when i broke my front teeth. Nerve or whatever was visible. My god that sucked, it hurt to breath. The wax helped a lot though. Hospital has emergency dental/plastic surgeons, but probably for only critical situations. I was also half drunk, so they plugged my teeth and sent me home. It was a long wait until mid week when I finally got a root canal...
AFallenDragon
Honestly unless you have a nasty infection from a broke tooth the ER isn't gonna do anything other then tell you to go to a dentist.
Aquacomforter
They don't have dentists in emergency rooms. They can maybe give a little pain relief but often drug seekers will take a broken tooth to multiple ERs
AFallenDragon
Yep & it screws the people who can't afford dentist care from getting any kind of help, It's the whole a few bad apples spoil the bunch thing.
dasclown
Ours has dentists and optometrists on call for such emergencies. They would totally call a dentist in to look at it and possibly get it worked on.
OohDaLolly
Also, remember that it's okay to mix Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen (Autism TicTacs, such as Tylenol) for more effective pain relief.
JackieTreehornProductions
Ummm my doctor warned me not to do this and keep them at least 4 hours apart in dosing because it is super hard on your liver.
OohDaLolly
They say the same thing about hard alcohol mixed with Meth, but what are you, a square?!?
echonite
On a regular basis, sure, but as a one-off to reduce intense pain, its not the end of the world.
ActuallyTonyHawk
My god this helped. I didn't know patches were a thing. Pain went from a 10/10 to a 6.5/10. Still bad but not nearly as bad. Thank you.
VagrantKoba
Also, cloves.
earthlingextraordinaire
Been there. You don't know me but I feel for you and I'm asking you to trust me on this.. ICEPACK.. hold it against your cheek until you can't feel anything, then hold it a little longer. Its the only thing that'll take that last 6.5 down even lower. TRY IT.
HandoB4Javert
Ice pack THROUGH A CLOTH.
veroniDiver
Clove oil, or mashed up cloves. Contains eugenol, local anesthetic. But don't overdo it, as it is not good for your gut. Google and read about it before applying. But it does help lessen the pain a bit until you get to a dentist.
HandoB4Javert
FoamingToad
Clove oil also helps. Not massively, but improves things slightly. Hope this helps, @OP.
Targe0
It's hurting because of the exposed nerves.
The patch helps them be less exposed.
HandoB4Javert
...and clove oil for immediate relief.
Which i learned from a film turning 50 next year - The Marathon Man https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074860/
PandaStonetree
It wont last long, just intended as a stop-gap until you so see a Dentist. A few days at least. You can walk right into a dentist and they will sit you immediately for that issue.
ActuallyTonyHawk
Went to dentist this morning. Was told to go away and come back in 10 days.
NonyGony
After you get better, get on Yelp or Reddit and crater their rep
draginator
Find a different dentist in the area, mine would never send me away in an emergency like that
ArchMagos
Thats a shit dentist, find a new one if you can.
PandaStonetree
Find another.
SharkDoctor
Clove oil is the most disgusting tasting thing you can get, and it burns like hell off the bat, but it worked the best for me back when I had teeth...and those teeth were falling out of my head. I can't remember the name of the stuff hold on. Okay well I can't find the name of the brand name stuff, but if you go to Walgreens or Rite Aid it'll be a small brown vial with little cotton buds. Just ask them for clove oil for toothaches. Worth every penny til you can get to the dentist.
cosonfused
or just clove itself.
AbelardSnazz
It does work but oh when you accidentally get it on the side of your tongue- blech!
bwittekoekover9000
reminds me of Marathon Man....*shudder*
SMarkt
one of the most horrifying torture scenes ever.
AbelardSnazz
Is it secret? Is it safe?
gwad
You can also bite the end of the stem off of a whole clove and tuck it in your gums by the problem tooth. They're pokey but it'll soften up. Takes a little longer to numb but they work great.
SharkDoctor
without fail, I would always, ALWAYS get it all over my mouth.
FoamingToad
You guys don't like the taste of clove oil? Weird.
AbelardSnazz
Are we talking about the same stuff? Oil of cloves tastes like battery acid with a herbal twist
FoamingToad
I don't think we're talking about the same stuff if you feel it has an acidic component. www.ebay.com/itm/146895162621 is the type of thing I'm talking about (not my e-bay, do not buy based on this comment).
