In propeller aircraft the same result is achieved by changing the angle of the propeller blades to "negative". It's also loud as hell.

So out of curiosity, is this common on most commercial airplanes today? I was only aware of the flaps on the wings decelerating the plane.

Flaps are designed to add lift at lower speeds to help take off or land, not stop/slow down, those would be spoilers.

depends on the model but yes they can have both. Spoilers would be on the top part of the wing and extend up to disrupt airflow, airbrakes.

We use thrust reverse to back up in a C-17. We practice 90 degree backing, and what we call Star turns to get a full 180 degrees

I work on aircraft. That is a lot of debris blowing into that engine. FOD (foreign object damage/debris) = gonna have a bad day.

The bottom one is how modern thrust reversers work on modern turbofan engines. The old bucket reverser method is only used on old turbojets.

Hell yes, go back to #4 and look at how hard the pilot has to yank on the rudder to maintain control after he applies full reverse thrust.

The rudder input wasn't for the thrust, as there shouldn't be any asymmetry there. It was a fairly minor input.

Next time you're on a jet take note when you touch down. The engines will suddenly get way louder and rumbly. That's the reversers.

That looks like the Paris Airshow. The planes are specially emptied ( no fuel / cargo ) and left without engine derate to impress spectators
