The people who call sexuality a choice are speaking from experience. They have chosen to be straight and are suppressing their authentic selves while thinking everyone is doing that.

In Latin left handed is sinister

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I write left handed... and that's it.
Can't even hold a fork properly left handed.
Nature just decided it would be a funny prank to make me do one single task with my left hand.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

And we did that, for a long time. Long enough the technical term for being left handed is just sinister.

Sinister, which today means evil, terrible, plotting, sinful, is just latin for left.

2 weeks ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

My uncle is the weirdest one I've seen. Shoots rifle left handed, pistol right. kicks a ball left footed, throws a ball right. eats right handed, writes left. And I got demonized for skating goofy. The only things that should be done right handed is brass instruments...kinda cuz they're just made that way. I'm sure in history there has been a lefty Euphonium though.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's a bit like me. Right handed, left eye dominant, left footed. Bodies will body uniquely.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm 60 years old, and I still have a scar on my left thumb from a middle-aged ruler my fourth grade teacher smacked me with riding with that hand.

Yeah left handed people were demonized for a very long time.

In the early X-Men comics, the racist humans were called "The Right".

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The X-Men have always been a weird analogy for racism because the humans are 100% right to be afraid of them and want them gone.

When I was a kid I could write and do pretty much everything equally (or equally bad) with both hands. My mother made me choose one dominant hand because as she said "using both causes issues with your brain". She never did give me a solid reason. She then heavily implied that being left handed was weird and the whole world is right handed. I became right handed but can still do most things with both just as easily.

SOUTH PAWS UNITE!

Meh. Maybe later.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This was literally a thing. My mom also had the left-handedness slapped out of her in school and that was California in the late 60s. Left handedness is the origin of the term Sinister.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm am absolute freak show then: I'm mostly right-handed, but there are a few major tasks that I naturally do with my left hand. Cross-dominant, I think it's called. But I'm no stranger to being a statistical anamoly, lol

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This would work effectively as written satire ... but as stand up?

I heard cheering and approval more than laughter.

There's an American dad episode where the kids realize francine's catholic nun education denied her her left landed tendencies

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My first grade teacher didn't mind which hand I used to write but the rumor was that the second grade teacher was very strict on it that you should use your right hand. Well, he unexpectedly died during that summer vacation and I must admit I was never more relieved of someone's demise. Hey, I know it isn't right but I was a kid and he scared me.

In the 90s (CT USA) I got bullied like crazy by teachers for being left handed. Older teachers tried to force me to switch.

I take solace in the thought that they are likely dead now. Vicious boomer assholes.

Mother-in-law is a class A bitch. Old school, ex judge's secretary, you know the type. Adopts the mantle of her former boss. She used a rod to hit the back of the hand of her grandchildren showing let-handed tendencies as they picked-up a pen etc. My wife is left-handed... My wife went to fucking town on the old cow when she did that. It stopped. Quickly.

What... I don't get it.

NSFW I'll be honest, it felt like he was getting into it so much that when the clip finished I genuinely said out loud to myself "I'm not actually sure if this is meant to be satire or not". I wouldn't be surprised if there are actually still people that are so fervently against left-handed people.

I went to a private religious school that believed this in the 90s. Good point but theres no use arguing with that level idiocy. Got to go around them

Left-handed people are sinister.

You can see on his face that he felt the "right power" fist raise at the end was taking it right up to the edge.

2 weeks ago | Likes 105 Dislikes 2

Oh yeah he’s like “oh shit, was that too far?”

But… he DOES realize it. I’d say let it slide so long as he doesn’t slip like that again.

Also he could’ve said “right hand power” but I feel like that would’ve been a mouthful.

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 11

Right? "Hooh, that was a very thin line there. I am so glad this landed."

2 weeks ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

I see that look as shame. He suddenly felt shame at saying something so close to 'white power' even knowing it's a joke. I see that as quite honourable really. He really really deep down does not want to be anywhere near that phrase. I think in that moment he regrets the joke, not because of consequences but because of his own values. Well, IMHO anyway

2 weeks ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I wasn't casting shade. As others pointed out he was tactful and it's all in the name of humor. There is just that flash in his eye when he realizes it and it caught my attention. Glad to see carefully considered responses here though. Gives me hope that Society hasn't completely collapsed.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm ambidextrous lefty, people have their brain assplode when they see me using both hands equally well lmao

2 weeks ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 3

Same. If my right hand gets tired from sawing something, I'll use my left one for a bit.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think most left handed people are more ambidextrous on average than right handed people are, due to being forced to use the right hand on many occasions.

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm ambidextrous as well. In school leaning to write they said put the pencil in the hand that felt more comfortable, which was very confusing for me. Thankfully the teacher told me right hand was more common, so I did not end up on the sinister side like some kind of weirdo. /s

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I learned to write with my right hand. I feel like I would have been a natural lefty because I'm better at underhanded throw, smoking cigarettes, knife, texting, peeling garlic, shooting, tiddlywinks, and sex with the left hand.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

So envious. My mom is left handed so everything at home was geared for leftys, scissors, seating arrangements, learning to write, dishwasher location, etc. I didn't know right handed scissors existed until kindergarten.
I'm still the only girl in my family who isn't right handed, even amongst my sister in law.
Also currently recovering from carpal and cubital tunnel release surgery on my right side so I currently have to use my left hand for everything and it's not been fun.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm Bambi-dextrous myself

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Imagine their brains when they learn you fuck both ways equally

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My FIL is left handed but writes with his right - as it what was forced on him at school. Reality is, we can do all the things with the other hand, we just have a preference and that develops the dexterity and muscle memory.

2 weeks ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

So you swing both ways?

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

im ambidextrous as well but my left hand penmanship is garbage (right is not great but better) mostly due to lack of practice but i handle all other tools with which ever hand is more convenient. ive broken 2 peoples brains while eating with chopsticks by just switching hands because one got tired. oh there is one thing i cant do for shit with my left hand is throw a ball. but that may be because i never tried to develop the mussel memory for the action

2 weeks ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

I write with right and throw with left.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I got a guy at work with that. I was swinging a hammer driving concrete anchors in. Right got tired so I switched to my left and kept chugging along. I watched him try it and got a good chuckle every time I heard a glancing strike on them. It's harder than it sounds.

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I never considered chopsticks something easier with the handed hand. Both are pretty much the same to me. TIL. Only writing and especially guitar are things I find difficult left handed. Writing is just a little tricky but not even that bad.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Polar bears are not always handed but they often prefer one paw if you see one digging with one paw more than the other or something like that it’s likely the paw they will use to strike in their first attack. Hopefully knowing that gives you the advantage needed if you ever find yourself in a fight with a polar bear

2 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

This could definitely make a difference in the case where the polar bear is also blind, deaf, old and disabled.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes... knowing which paw it's going to lead on will definitely be the secret sauce that will otherwise break the stalemate between man and polar bear boxing.

2 weeks ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Step 1, don't fight a polar bear.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

People really did believe that left handed was wrong and the left handed kids just needed to be trained to use the right hand, because it's the correct hand.

2 weeks ago | Likes 137 Dislikes 1

In kindergarten, my "old school" teacher tried to stop me from being left-handed. Glad my mom lost it on her back then. Since then, I've had to adapt to a right society, so I do many things right-handedly. So, I guess I'm bi.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have two cousins that were born left handed. The older one was retrained to use his right hand when he was young but they didn’t bother doing that with the younger one when he came along

2 weeks ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I think it was only in 1990 that Japan finally no longer considered being left handed as a mental illness.

2 weeks ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

I was one of those kids. The results were a low quality ambidextrous writing style. My hand writing is terrible with both hands, but worse with my left (native) hand, because it wasn't used during school. My hand writing is hard to recognize because it changes constantly. School issued penmanship lessons made it worse, because now I write in any style I choose, and its always a bit different. In late adulthood I have settled on using engineer block lettering and strive to use only that. ->

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

-> As a result my votes frequently do not get counted because the signature on my ballot does not match what they have on file. I have to go to the voting office and fill out 20 voting cards and ask they keep them all on file to ensure my vote gets counted. I have been denied money from my own bank account because my signature didn't match the signature card. I use scissors, chopsticks, knives etc with my left hand. Im left footed, and skate goofy. Dont interfere with a childs dominant hand.

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Literally the word sinister means what it means today because it originally meant left and they hated left handed people so much that sinister meant evil because left handed was evil and left handed people were sinister. Not like the right handed people who were dexterous.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My uncle was left handed and raised in catholic school and they would hit you with a ruler every time you tried to use the left hand to write. They really believed it was evil.

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

And in some cases the attempt to force that into people actually caused things like dyslexia and other developmental issues

2 weeks ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Pretty sure it goes further than that. That being left handed was the devil. Also, studies that showed all of the sudden the amount of left handed people spiked once such a ridiculous mindset was abolished. (I believe often cited for openness in lgbtqa communities as well). Basically, stop demonizing humanity for its own existence and you’ll find out that humanity has a larger demographic than you thought.

My dad is a leftie. His mom was a leftie, too. His mom had it beaten out of her. He was free to live life free and open as a proud leftie. Before I came out of the closet as trans, I would always cite the history of left-handedness over time to him and he never got it. Now I don't talk to him.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same for mental health diagnostics, cancer, etc. Oh autism spiked suddenly? Huh, it aligns with times when the definitions were elaborated or combined, or better trained to professionals. Crazy, must be a conspiracy! /s

My mum, back in the dark ages, (1920's) had her left hand tied to the back of the chair and got beaten if she didn't write properly with her right. And yes, I know this isn't about handedness, but it's interesting how things can become normal.

I'm left handed and every weekend when I was a teenager I would hang out with all my right handed friends like I was no different. My mum was really supportive. Dad never talked about it even when he was beating the shit outta me with a set of jumper cables.

My mother said she got smacked for writing left handed until my air force veteran grandfather paid the school a visit.

2 weeks ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I wasn't beaten at least, but even in kindergarten in the year *2000* I was corrected for writing with my left hand.

2 weeks ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I'm left handed but only for writing. Because every device is designed for right handed people. So I was forced by society to be right handed. I propose a left handed revolt! Viva la lefties! No longer shall we have to live in fear of white boards!!

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My mother told me that my early grade teacher asked her if she wanted them to force me to use my right hand. Apparently I was using either one to write. Turns out I write terribly with either hand.

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My youngest son came out as left-handed, but we could tell he was different when he was 2

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

My grandma the same. But she always wrote left when I saw her write so you eventually didn't give a fuck anymore

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My mother did as well. 1970's. Hell, I got beat in school in the 90's.

2 weeks ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

When i was a kid in the 80s my dad went apeshit when a drunk farmer passing by on a cart whipped me once because i apparently didn't get out of the way fast enough.

I don't want to think about what he would have done to a teacher and later the school if they had laid hands on me.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Meh. My mom beat the shit out of me too. She didn't care.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

At school in tx in the 90s, still smacking kids with a ruler across the nuckles for using left hand. Wouldn't surprise me if they still are in some of the rural shitholes.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In the 50s/60s, my mom got her left hand hit with a ruler when she wrote with it. She kept doing it though, and has beautiful penmanship.

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My first job was at a convenient store. A cop would occasionally come by and write a check. She'd write with her head nearly touching the counter and right arm wrapped all the way around the check like a horror movie monster. She was forced to be right handed growing up. My uncle also has an issue after also being forced that way. Glad I never had to undergo that as a lefty.

2 weeks ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Oh, it was still a thing in 70's rural Finland as well. Sans tying and beating, but 1st & 2nd grade teacher, who was probably held together with embalming fluid and some lich rituals forced me and another classmate to write with our right hand. Used left, and it was a automatic fail.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had that done to me in the late 1980s, the dark ages weren't that long ago.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was born in 93. My preschool teacher would hit my knuckles with a ruler trying to force me to use my right hand.

I added this to say, we may talk about these mentalities as if they are things from a bygone era but they are very much kept alive today by regressive holdouts and secluded, insular regions that are never exposed directly to cultures outside their limited bubble.

I also know this isn't about handedness.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Even in the late 90s (small town of course) my teacher would make me stay in from recess to practice my handwriting because i was left handed and she didn’t like it. When I was taught sports, only shown the right hand/leg dominant way. No left handed gloves, or clubs etc

My hand writing is now impeccable but I also now i can only write with my left hand and everything else I became right hand / leg dominant. Still can’t write with my right hand tho, if I do it’s very poor.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My grandfather was punished for writing with his left hand. That stopped when he was told "write your assignment with your right hand or don't write at all!". So he put his pen down and sat there, when the teacher asked what he was doing he said not-writing, as that was a presented option. His mom backed him up on that.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I started out left handed and was smacked around by my very religious parents until I became right handed. This was back in the late 70s when it wasn't considered child abuse.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

in my elementary school they would buckle the right hand into a metal jig to contort it into the shape to write with

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also interesting looking deeper at how with writing the pen grip style was force fed to everyone as dynamic tripod. It was the most common after all so to measure children’s metrics they graded on how well children used the dynamic tripod. My daughter writes with a lateral quadrupod grip. My hell for her up to grade 1 fighting her trying to force dynamic tripod. Eventually a teachers assistant told me about the other 3 main grips and things got a lot better.

2 weeks ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 0

I have hitchhikers thumb and it was always a struggle to hold a pen right. Now as an adult I never use the stupid tripod.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same thing for me back in the 90s. TIL there's a word for it.

2 weeks ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

My youngest boy started ‘drawing’ when he was about 2 and a half. He graduated to writing little stories— stick people but they became very detailed. Every year at back to school night my husband and I would get the lecture that he didn’t hold his pencil’right’ and yet he was praised by his art then his letters were perfect. By his third year I could tell the teacher wanted to say something and I’d tell her off saying “just don’t watch.”

2 weeks ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

At 27 years old I've recently switched to modified tripod, and goddamn, has it significantly reduced the strain I feel when writing. It used to be absolutely immediate that I'd just death grip the pencil and start cramping up in wrist/forearm and now I can just float along the page for a bit. My handwriting has always been shit, and now it's different shit bc adapting to new grip, but maybe if I had known sooner I'd have decent handwriting by now

2 weeks ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Don't know the names for them in English (or barely in my own language for that matter) but while only one type of grip was hammered in in school, in my art schools several were taught. So you could try which ones suited you best, and which ones suited different techniques of drawing and writing best. I'm very grateful for having that opportunity to learn several, and being able to tell my school teacher that they could talk to my art teachers if they only thought one was "right".

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You might just surprise yourself.
I passed my insurance license test by printing out the concepts I needed to learn. I put them in a 4×11 column and printed a chapter each time. In the OTHER column I wrote out longhand (using different color pens made my study sheets look like the aftereffects of a diarrhetic unicorn but I avoided carpal tunnel symptoms that way.) my penmanship AUTOMATICALLY Iimproved.
I just needed practice.

My dad came from a family of 7 brothers, 3 sisters, a grandma and a grampa. If you had a left-handed sibling, it made sitting at a crowded dinner table awkward, always jabbing the person next to them with an elbow. So Dad's left-handed brother learned to eat right-handed.

When I heard that story, I started training myself to eat left-handed. I was always such a rebel.

2 weeks ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Could you elaborate on this? Why would you jab ppl with one elbow butnot the other?

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

If you're left-handed, when you raise your arm while eating, your elbow intrudes on the elbow space of the person eating on your left.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I get that USians only eat with one utensil so they only use one arm, but are you raising your elbow outward towards the person next to you?
