This was something women did all over the world in the 1900's and well before, kinda like how many used to wear hats as well. It's only now that it's seen as specifc to some cultures and creeds.

Much like men wearing hats. Part of it is "modesty".(aka prudishness), part deference before god to not go out with an uncovered head, part is practicality to have a head covering.
Not unlike it was in many muslim countries at that time.
In Germany, at that time still more common in rural areas, girls and unmarried women were encouraged to wear braids and when married to wear a "hood" in public. Openly worn hair was a bit slutty and scandalous.

Headscarves were pretty common, for cultural reasons all over Europe. A german figure of speech for a girl getting married is still "to get under the hood".
At the same time, many majority muslim countries had a much more lenient attitude towards it than they do today, not so radically different than Europe at the time.

I just had a scary thought, I have an (almost) 13yo son now, it is 2024, and the way historical trends seem to play out in the trifecta of pandemic, financial crisis, increasing authoritarianism/fascism, ending in full scale war...that doesn't bode well for the timeframe of him being a young adult. I was in Afghanistan, I have PTSD and it's absolute shit, I don't want that for him. I know that nothing is certain and "history repeating itself" is a very dubious idea, but that worries me.

Far more similar than I expected. I found mortality rates of about 15% for both childhood (young childhood that is) and the war. That's for British soldiers and children.

Exactly, “first year of life.” These lads likely made it to adulthood if they did not die in the war. Smallpox and other vaccines became mandatory in Britain in 1853. It wasn’t until the 1940’s that it became largely mandatory for most of the World.

Fuck I noticed a discrepancy there. See that little brass disc on the buttstock of the middle dude's rifle? That was only on the pre-early war variant of the Lee Enfield. It would have the unit to which it belonged stamped on it for identification. Around 1916, they realized the Germans could use captured rifles to gain Intel on unit deployment and removed/stopped making them. The man on the left has a late war variant with no disc cutout. Uniformity would be enforced, so disc needs removed.
