Are they from the same unit? Their colors would seem to say yes, but having a symbol would be nice.

Same army but different units. And they both opted out of having a symbol on their armor in case they lost. Mercenary trick of the trade.

maybe give them a permanent scratch on the holders or chest piece where the symbol would be. A bit of history and mystery to the reader
