Met my husband on IRC in #gayphilly in the 90's and we were together until he died in 2020.

mIRC was the best client I ever used.

I'm the guy who actually paid for a license rather than using a key generator.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I bet you did that for Winzip too.

My lifetime key expired!

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh, that's annoying, I have (had?) one of those, too. Just not used it in about ten years as I got a MacBook then.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I was a little annoyed when he did this, I bought a license years ago and then suddenly my "lifetime license" is no longer.

#computertech on rizon (irc.rizon.net) is alright, though the owner is kinda a dumbass. We still love him though, he's alright for an Irishman.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

When you click his nose it makes a beep noise

thunderbird has a half decent IRC client buit in

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There was a time when most teens in Finland would think that all 'irc' meant was this Finnish social media site called "Irc-galleria" that originally used to be basically Facebook for Finnish irc users

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This was around the turn of the millennium. Yes I have back pain

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The rest are just irc in a raincoat.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

i used that for a while, but then went to bitchx, then irssi.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

bX is and will always be the best. With screens for persistent sessions, it was perfect.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

pirch on windows, bitchx on *nix for me

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

IRC is not dead. But it is gatekept by a technical barrier, you have to have some idea how things work to be able to use it.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But it is clearly dying if you look at the statistics https://netsplit.de/networks/top10.php

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I actually bought a license

mIRC with ATF scripts and Pirch as a backup. Leave to get something to eat and come back to find out some dipshit tried to de-op you and your scripts took over the channel and kicked everyone in a de-op re-op clusterfuck. Good times.

I miss how I used to be able to quickly juggle many chat rooms and pms with no lag, and coordinate with people all over the world on projects. Now I have MS Teams that sucks and people use in the dumbest ways.

2 years ago | Likes 123 Dislikes 2

multiple windows! not having to go through my entire discord server list every time i get pinged someplace else!

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The best part about teams is how 20+ in a meeting causes the most horrendous web API lag on the planet

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Somebody forwarded me an email as a file in a Teams chat. I would have felt better if they had printed it off and handed it to me.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Aaaahhh... Aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh!
I think about it and it makes me so mad.
Teams, Skype, zoom, messenger....
All of these stupid applications and video services and bloatware and data harvesting just to send each other messages or share files.

I can't fucking BELIEVE how well the marketing worked for messenger programs

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I worked in a place where we used irc with a self-hosted irc server as work chat. Worked very well, and was in line with sensitive data policies on not discussing work stuff on third-party cloud services.

Jabber.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

NEW teams. Same shit, but it links to the nearest bt headset (my lamp because the watch is a samsung) and my laptop camera is "no camera detected" and links to my neighbors security camera showing... their dog out again. I mean, you want deaf it, microsoft gotchu.

2 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 2

I just had to use it first time while ago, and it desperately tried to connect to my oculus that is sitting there with empty batteries.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I booted up into a meeting with my laptop camera rotated 90Β°. This camera doesn't even HAVE A ROTATE FUNCTION, MICROSOFT???
Next meeting my camera didn't even turn on, even after leaving/rejoining the meeting. Yet Teams thought it was on, so just displayed a transparent background. Teams also couldn't sign me in, so I joined that 2nd meeting as a guest.
Whoever is physically responsible for these updates, I just wanna have a chat with. It'll be quick, promise.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

β€œNew” Teams is fucking atrocious in a way that I thought impossible for even Microsoft. Orgs that force this shit on remote workers knowingly are in the wrong.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Also yes ha-ha you can turn into an avatar making goofy faces. If I have to wait another ten minutes for everyone on a fucking planning meeting for a publicly held company to get their silly shit out, I’m moving to the woods.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

How about just moving the meeting to the woods?
/gallery/8cfdVDu

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Aye, I could do that.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Back in the day a huge amount of anime had to be fansubbed to even see it in the US. We had to use peer to peer sharing on irc chat rooms to get a lot of it. Basically the og torrents.

Anyone else that was part of that scene?

Still a thing on Rizon, although the hostname has changed.

I will have to check it out. Been a long time since I was on there. Ps2 had just launched last time I was on dalnet.

Rizon is still available at irc.rizon.net, same host it's been as long as I can remember.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The bot you do DCC with has changed since back then. Rizon is still the same.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You think there is a single xdcc bot?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

With the merger of criten (IIRC) and Rizon, Rizon's probably more xdcc bots than users now.
