Ive had the opposite experience. when a large ship approaches a big bridge (the verrazano between brooklyn and staten island in my example), big boats - cruise ships, tankers, container ships - go from looking enormous as they pass you, to looking like bathtub toys as they pass under the bridge.

From 2007. Pasha Bulker ran aground because of major storms that caused it to drift too close to shore, getting mired in the sand. Stuck for 3 weeks. The tides coming and going weren't enough to move it.
In the end, the ship was finally freed but at a cost of about $1 million. It suffered some damage, such as a lost rudder, but was able to head directly to Japan for repairs after being freed.

After seeing this on the news, went for a drive into Nobby's for a look. Shit that's a big boat. Came round the Esplanade and *bang* there's this huge wall of red blocking the view. Most excting thing that's happened here since the Sygna washed up on Stockton beach in '74.

If the ship was having mechanical issues and couldn’t get out to sea they would intentionally ground it on a beach. It’s better than some rocky shoreline where they would break apart.
