Still looking for a good free bluray player
red666111
this shit again...
Chucker84
Blender! Open's most standard 3D file formats, and has a video editor to boot (aswellastonnesofotherstuff)
IveBeenSwimminginRawSewageILoveIt
Man, I forgot about IrfanView
LongNamesAreStillCoolRight
Use PotPlayer instead of MPC or VLC. Comes with every possible codec and very customizable, yet easy to use.
wolfkin
does it have an "Easy Browser" like GOMPlayer because the easy browser is literally what sold me on GOM.
Docrox
What about that "unregistered hypercam?" I hear that's the #1 way to screen record Runescape.
eMeSsBee
BANDICAM TRIAL
McKyrl
Time to favorite and forget.
pomax
what is this, 2001?
tablecat
None of those programs are particularly outdated, except for Pidgin.
wineandwine
Trillian! I was getting nostalgic the other day and looked at screen shots! Good times of when I actually had msn and Facebook
Kimstitch
Inkscape is more fun than Gimp, I find.
geiokami
Winrar has a much better compression algorithm than 7zip.....
serpentgawd
this shit again!?
magrok
OpenOffice has been my friend through many adventures.
DLVX
Again with this outdated fucking list... How about no
Admer456
You could have added Goldwave as an honorable mention. I use it to produce sound files for games etc.
s4xy
WinAMP is dead D:
foobar2000, WMP, and VLC all the way
Armorfinish
Why is deluge an honorable mention in video players?
Think it might play media but I'm pretty sure there are better options
Because making a list in Photoshop is a pain in the ass, when you haven't done it before, and so is proofreading. That's what happened.
pinkiesmalls
Gimp is great! I heard it works really well with Blender which is a 3d and animation software.
kasuha
I prefer FastStone over Irfan. More comfortable for image browsing.
Captainclickbait
Hey hey hey, he used years to upload this on Explorer. He is actually the original post with relevant info in '98
I'm sorry, but I have no idea what you're trying to say
FourCatsAndSevenMemesAgo
Most of these I've used with satisfaction. Infranview, not so much
spcmgmt
I've been using Audacity for years... great little program!
AllisDashChalmersWasAnInsideJob
Audacity and irfanView are my favorite freeware ever created. Lightweight and still very powerful.
Guanjyn
I have Ableton Live and I've been producing shit for ages, but I still use Audacity for the final master. Love that shit.
GIMP isn't bad. Here's one of my favorite streams from someone who uses GIMP daily. Excellent if you want to see twitch.tv/jasmocolors
Pidgin has long it's usefulness for me. It's funny to see it advertised as Hangout and Facebook whereas I know it as AOL+MSN+ICQ #AdiumRulez
Picasa is literally dead now I still think it had the best image viewer I've ever known if I could find a way to get JUST that I'd be happy
RoadTripped
Audacity has a horrible user interface. So does Gimp. And did he say superior to vlc...?
ADFluffy
Favorite and Forget
SonicDH
Gimp is what happens when you give programmers photoshop's feature list and say "okay, go!". Audacity is the fisher price version of a DAW.
I agree Gimp, (for my needs) is just as good as PS.
I'm sorry. You misunderstood my comment. Let me be clear: GIMP has some of the worst UX I've ever encountered. It's ugly and unintuitive.
Haha well that might be true but as a humble end user I am pleased with it.
TheEmptied
Stopped reading at "Superior to VLC"
VLC is outdated and inferior to a tweaked mpc
Quality is better with the right tweaks and it's honestly faster and lighter
Iain3927
VLC will read any file and those stone tables in the pyramids too
mexicanstig
I head thats how Sam and Dean actually translated the tablets...
crimsondog
and supports absolutely no external codecs so you can kiss your enhancements like SVP goodbye if you use it
Faukner
Thanks for mentioning SVP. I had no idea what it was. Just set it up with MPC and everything looks great.
4chansdboard
VLC is the Daniel Jackson of media players
dembonz00
Their android app is total crap though. Won't read videos from my NAS but the TVOS version of VLC will.
01010111011001010110110001100011011011110110110101100101
Also you can't even loop videos. Worthless.
davesrandomstuff
The android app will play .VOB files, all the others I've tried can't. But for everything else I use MX Player (an old version tho).
GuitarMuscles
free as in speech or free as in beer?
Beer
some of them both, definitiely all of them beef.
greyhound40
Gimp is utter shit.
DoctorSpaceDog
Especially compared to photoshop.
I'd rather use GIMP than pay for or pirate Photoshop. Has enough features and works well for me.
boltgolt
It's the best free image editor there is, especially on linux
TangledUpInMyHead
Can you recommend a better alternative?
HolyHellJezebel
I like Pixlr. Easy to use. Free. But I am not doing difficult things.
paint.net
Photoshop
wracky
Or if you can spare a few bucks, I've always found Paint Shop Pro to be pretty decent. Haven't tried more recent versions though..
GlassofSake
Paint.net and Inkscape
Inkscape is a horrible alternative to GIMP. That's like saying your convertible is an alternative to my minivan. Not if I'm a soccer mom.
There's always MS Paint, which is an acceptable alternative to all programs.
ahh you don't need a minivan here's a bicycle with a wagon behind it. I'm always impressed by MSPaint drawing b/c MSP is so bloody limited.
vobra
It's not photoshop but paint.net is pretty useful
Z1ggyStardust
I think it does ok. By far not as good as Photoshop but a hell of a lot cheaper
Photoshop can be $10 a month. I'll gladly pay that for a better UI, more useful tools and power editing.
MuayThaiGifs
Ok, but some people would like to do basic image editing without shelling out $120/year. That's who this post is for.
Then go with the myriad of online editors, most of which are free or something like paint.net that you know ... doesn't suck.
I prefer GIMP on my laptop for little jobs. It's the best alternative to Adobe CS (which is installed on my main PC).
PhysicsPhil
Forgetting Blender!!!
I didn't include it on purpose. I didn't include software that was very niche or was already very widely known.
You're not OP and this list has niche software on it.
I made the list, though. OP is just reposting it.
Zoddom
its a list of useful software...
Blender is useful software. I use it all the time
