I remember when I was working retail and a dude covered in tats and piercings came up with his daughter. Nicest father I'd ever seen.

I was maybe 10 once playing in the front yard and my cat was standing next to me (doing whatever cats do). Two teenagers in hoods came >>

Often in school the person bullied would be referred for counselling but they aren't the one who has a problem that needs dealing

I have adhd and there could be an arguable overlap with very mild dyslexia- or it could just be adhd- but what happens to me is words 1

Yup, if it turns into a fight it’s a net win. Big guy shouldn’t fight because it’s not fair, smaller guy looks “badass”

This is very accurate. I absolutely hated getting physical, and I had trouble in certain sports because I was so afraid of hurting someone
mommylupul
False. It's cause big guys have all lost control or went too far by accident once and are more often the target cause "he can take it"
Source: very, very big guy husband. Super careful around anyone new or in public due to being harassed entire life.

I'm reminded of that blog by a large black man teaching English in Japan. Sometimes startled people when he was standing still reading.
(Sometimes he was simply by far the largest human someone had met in person.)
ForeverAloneInHolland
Yup. Female colleagues I get along with well and who think I'm a nice person still get startled by me just because I'm me.
IwishIwereKeithDavid
Especially when we're walking at night, and we gotta cross the street just so people think we're not murders.
That’s part of it. Had an old lady that thought I was scary until a mutual friend let her know I was the opposite, we’ve become buddies
clickclackmootpoint
The worst part about being a bigger guy is being afraid to walk near people at night, being unintentionally threatening just for existing
Affray
1)I'm not a giant, but I'm pretty burly and apparently hold myself in an intimidating fashion. If I don't break the ice with new friends
2)no one ever talks to me. Once the wall is down they see I'm just a fun loving man-child, but it's up to me to make that very apparent.
SayWhatYouMeanMeanWhatYouSay
Bingo. We have to be nice, if we’re not everyone’s afraid to even talk to us. It’s upsetting when you realize everyone is scared of you.
StevieMcSteveface
Don't you find it's a fine line sometimes? I always found I had to balance being overtly nice with taking no shit. Too far one way and
People were intimidated, to far the other and people constantly tried shit because you were a pushover. It was insanely stressful for her.
Or you get accused of bullying, or treated like one. For doing the exact same things/words/behaviors others do.
EvilKrikkit
What?
Liquidditch
No always, but often, big guys dont get bullied cause they can fight back, or look like they can.
They get targetted more because it's more gratifying to a bully to bring down a large person and the stigma attached to it is far less.
WaveOfSilence
I got the shit kicked out of me until i grew to 6'2". Im nice cuz i know what pain is and dont wanna put others through it
It's also because we don't want to hurt smaller people, i.e. we learn to walk with care because if we bump into you, you get knocked down.
ThePiniestApple
As a relatively small person I’ve learnt to walk with care too for the same reason, it isn’t fun getting completely knocked out of the way
Ikr, I remembered playing basketball in 9th grade, and our boys class (along with my 6ft + tall friends and me) got put against the 1/2
10th grade girls' class, who were all least ½ a foot shorter than us. I went to try and steal the ball from the girl playing against 2/3
us, but she screamed and fell backwards when I came up to her. I just kinda stood there like "WTF, you idiot" for a second. Lmao
Kyodaiki
I grew up a big guy. I was picked on frequently until I started fighting back, beause I stood out.
JustLucky75
im short but very stocky, massively bullied and started fighting back. i was punished harsher than the bullies which they knew where bullyin
celestedrake
One of my friends from college was a nice big guy...He was picked on, too, and couldn't fight back or anything (1)
due to fear of looking like the bully... (2)
totallynotaghost
I'm 15, I'm 6'1" 280lbs and built like a tank, I was getting picked on, by a tiny lil bitch, because I'm a huge nerd, so one day I was 1/?
In my favorite teachers class, and he knows about me being pickednon, but the kid doesn't listen to reason, so I grab the little shit by 2/3
His throat, and I asked him if he was keep doing this shit, he just shook his head, and no one said anything since, not even the teacher
SpringToMyWinter
“Deviation from the norm will be punished unless it is exploitable”
Newlyof
My older brother had to deal with the same thing. He got a bad name bc he reacted badly once when it just got too much. It broke my heart
Dayspring23
This. The worst was when teachers watched it happen, just ITCHING to jump on you for defending yourself, since "you're bigger than s/he is!"
KjTheLightning
the worst part is that teachers are most times the ones picking onto you when you're the big kid, because other kids may(but probably not)
be scared of you, but a teacher has -usually- nothing to fear from a kid no matter how big they are, and if the teacher is really bad, they
will make the kid's life a living hell of psychological abuse.
Britich
Happened to me (big chap) my only response was to tell the Teacher, the Year Head and Principle "If you did your job I wouldn't have to"
I still got in trouble but fuck it I was in the right and whats right is right. Except left, thats left. Or straight ahead.. up and down..
Zaayl
Raise your voice when frustrated, teacher files formal complaint that they "felt threatened and unsafe"
Ikr, I fought against these bullies like 4 times, and every time I got in more trouble than they did, even though I was defending myself
museofheart
Oh my, I got in ridiculous trouble at school once after a fight with another girl even though I only lashed out after being backed into
A corner, bad idea considering I have an anxiety problem. I got the whole 'you're bigger and a little older' when the other girl had
A huge track record of being a fighty little shit. Got sent to isolation the entire day after while the other girl was wandering around
MichaelHames
From experience it’s not the other students that are the problem it’s the teachers punishing you for pushing back that’s the problem
0100100001100101011011000110110001101111
Back in younger elementary school you know how they always say "go to a teacher if you're being bullied!", well some random kid came up 1/?

Besides the punishment itself: Figures of authority and trust can do more damage to your psyche, especially when you are young and (1)
impressionable. Kids can also emotionally hurt like that if they at first earn your trust. ...I never had the teacher problem, but had a (2)

Yup. Female colleagues I get along with well and who think I'm a nice person still get startled by me just because I'm me.
IwishIwereKeithDavid
Especially when we're walking at night, and we gotta cross the street just so people think we're not murders.
wtforero
That’s part of it. Had an old lady that thought I was scary until a mutual friend let her know I was the opposite, we’ve become buddies
clickclackmootpoint
The worst part about being a bigger guy is being afraid to walk near people at night, being unintentionally threatening just for existing
Affray
1)I'm not a giant, but I'm pretty burly and apparently hold myself in an intimidating fashion. If I don't break the ice with new friends
Affray
2)no one ever talks to me. Once the wall is down they see I'm just a fun loving man-child, but it's up to me to make that very apparent.
SayWhatYouMeanMeanWhatYouSay
Bingo. We have to be nice, if we’re not everyone’s afraid to even talk to us. It’s upsetting when you realize everyone is scared of you.
StevieMcSteveface
Don't you find it's a fine line sometimes? I always found I had to balance being overtly nice with taking no shit. Too far one way and
StevieMcSteveface
People were intimidated, to far the other and people constantly tried shit because you were a pushover. It was insanely stressful for her.
Jesterr
Or you get accused of bullying, or treated like one. For doing the exact same things/words/behaviors others do.
EvilKrikkit
What?
Liquidditch
No always, but often, big guys dont get bullied cause they can fight back, or look like they can.
RaynWisp
They get targetted more because it's more gratifying to a bully to bring down a large person and the stigma attached to it is far less.
WaveOfSilence
I got the shit kicked out of me until i grew to 6'2". Im nice cuz i know what pain is and dont wanna put others through it
woodrobin
It's also because we don't want to hurt smaller people, i.e. we learn to walk with care because if we bump into you, you get knocked down.
ThePiniestApple
As a relatively small person I’ve learnt to walk with care too for the same reason, it isn’t fun getting completely knocked out of the way

Ikr, I remembered playing basketball in 9th grade, and our boys class (along with my 6ft + tall friends and me) got put against the 1/2
SexualConsent
10th grade girls' class, who were all least ½ a foot shorter than us. I went to try and steal the ball from the girl playing against 2/3

us, but she screamed and fell backwards when I came up to her. I just kinda stood there like "WTF, you idiot" for a second. Lmao
Kyodaiki
I grew up a big guy. I was picked on frequently until I started fighting back, beause I stood out.
JustLucky75
im short but very stocky, massively bullied and started fighting back. i was punished harsher than the bullies which they knew where bullyin
celestedrake
One of my friends from college was a nice big guy...He was picked on, too, and couldn't fight back or anything (1)
celestedrake
due to fear of looking like the bully... (2)
totallynotaghost
I'm 15, I'm 6'1" 280lbs and built like a tank, I was getting picked on, by a tiny lil bitch, because I'm a huge nerd, so one day I was 1/?

In my favorite teachers class, and he knows about me being pickednon, but the kid doesn't listen to reason, so I grab the little shit by 2/3
totallynotaghost
His throat, and I asked him if he was keep doing this shit, he just shook his head, and no one said anything since, not even the teacher
SpringToMyWinter
“Deviation from the norm will be punished unless it is exploitable”
Newlyof
My older brother had to deal with the same thing. He got a bad name bc he reacted badly once when it just got too much. It broke my heart
Dayspring23
This. The worst was when teachers watched it happen, just ITCHING to jump on you for defending yourself, since "you're bigger than s/he is!"
KjTheLightning
the worst part is that teachers are most times the ones picking onto you when you're the big kid, because other kids may(but probably not)
KjTheLightning
be scared of you, but a teacher has -usually- nothing to fear from a kid no matter how big they are, and if the teacher is really bad, they
KjTheLightning
will make the kid's life a living hell of psychological abuse.
Britich
Happened to me (big chap) my only response was to tell the Teacher, the Year Head and Principle "If you did your job I wouldn't have to"
Britich
I still got in trouble but fuck it I was in the right and whats right is right. Except left, thats left. Or straight ahead.. up and down..
Zaayl
Raise your voice when frustrated, teacher files formal complaint that they "felt threatened and unsafe"
SexualConsent
Ikr, I fought against these bullies like 4 times, and every time I got in more trouble than they did, even though I was defending myself
museofheart
Oh my, I got in ridiculous trouble at school once after a fight with another girl even though I only lashed out after being backed into
museofheart
A corner, bad idea considering I have an anxiety problem. I got the whole 'you're bigger and a little older' when the other girl had
museofheart
A huge track record of being a fighty little shit. Got sent to isolation the entire day after while the other girl was wandering around
MichaelHames
From experience it’s not the other students that are the problem it’s the teachers punishing you for pushing back that’s the problem

Back in younger elementary school you know how they always say "go to a teacher if you're being bullied!", well some random kid came up 1/?

Besides the punishment itself: Figures of authority and trust can do more damage to your psyche, especially when you are young and (1)
celestedrake
impressionable. Kids can also emotionally hurt like that if they at first earn your trust. ...I never had the teacher problem, but had a (2)
