What a week, but staying strong. Could use some power hugs tho. It was my birthday same-day that my brother's wife died, now it will always be the day that she died as well as my birthday. Maybe it's petty to think that way, but seems hard to loose that thought. Lots of negative thoughts, but staying sober is what keeps me going and gives me strength.
Most viral edit.
This community is awesome, has been big part of my everyday support system for years and in bad times you really show how beautiful community this really is. One love <3
Ps. If you want to help me further, I'm trying get deeper into classical music, piano and orchestral stuff, you can send me your recommendations.

Congratulations on staying sober through this.

I was grateful when my cousins’ cousin who died of cancer as a child died one day after my birthday because I knew my family would want to memorialize her passing every year and would choose doing that over celebrating my birthday. At this point, I don’t even celebrate my birthday anymore and I never see my family so it doesn’t matter. Good luck, feel free to change your birthday date to celebrate if it helps

That choice is the bravest you can make. I've been there. Even poured myself a drink after years and years. Poured it out.
Stay strong my friend.

My father died on my then-husbands birthday. Hard to get around the association for a bit, im sorry. But we internet folks celebrate your birth and existence in the world. Heres a hug from Oregon. https://media4.giphy.com/media/v1.Y2lkPWE1NzM3M2U1YnNkZmdxcmp2ZGt0bnEzbzhjNWtuNGo1bG5kNmthcGJ5dmF2NmV6ciZlcD12MV9naWZzX3NlYXJjaCZjdD1n/vEEaxS05CdExEGK0We/200w.webp

Congratulations on staying sober. My father died on my wife's and my weeing anniversary. Over time, you will be able to compartmentalize the two. Stay strong and sober!
FormerlySable
Seconded. My father-in-law died completely unexpectedly on my birthday in 2014. It will get better, I promise.

Stay sober! Go to a meeting. We are cheering you on. Your story is similar to many people including mine.
DJOldguy
Stay strong @joble, not gonna be easy, but believe in you, and you'll make it. Keep sharing too, that helps. Dream about a better tomorrow, a better life, clean and sober. Remember why you went dry in the first place, keep what's important in mind. These are all things that helped me, and sober now 45 years, maybe they will help you.

Thanks, just opening up here, writing all here and your support has helped a lot and I got over from the worst, I was bit spiraling with thoughts.

As my wise son says, there's always an excuse to drink.
Celebrating something: drink.
Something bad happened: drink
You're better and wiser for not failing for that trap.
Good for you, and Congratulations!

Condolences to your brother.

Thank you, it really is so, day at a time, and with me hour at the time(over thinker), even today I have had good moments as well while doing sports, which is my safe place.
kathlTvVillain

I have found that this eclectic bunch of internet strangers are my biggest supporters. Whenever I have bad moments, I come here for hope, a good laugh, or just mindless scrolling.
Stay strong, we have your back!

I once heard a guy describe addiction this way,
“It didn’t matter what any of the problems I encountered were. My solution to each was drinking, smoking weed, smoking cigarettes, doing drugs and having sex and I was always resentful and surprised when none of those actions made my life any better.”
smashole
Your doing great!

@OP. buy yourself a nice juice or stupidly fancy bubble water from Italy or some shit. Have a quiet moment to share a nonalcoholic drink with the memory of the love ones you lost.

I know how easy it would be to use an excuse. It lets you let yourself off the hook and a readymade story for everyone else. https://media2.giphy.com/media/v1.Y2lkPTY1YjkxZmJlN2F2eDNhaWg2cDEyaDlqOGZlOXFjdHAwcTg4b2ZpdTh1YzlmendkZyZlcD12MV9naWZzX3NlYXJjaCZjdD1n/fdyZ3qI0GVZC0/giphy.mp4

Are there extenuating circumstances for why your best friend is dating your ex and is still your best friend? What kind of ex we talking- someone you casually dated? Someone who you loved and had a long term relationship with?
joble
She was my first love, but sure we were young, 18 years old, we were together for six months so not that long, it really shouldn't feel that bad, but I find myself very annoyed by that. But I feel we have been drifting apart with my friend otherwise as well, it closely connected with alcohol and weed. I don't want to do that anymore, he does.
adrianontherocks
Sounds like the two of you have grown in different ways. That’s ok. Sometimes friendships have to break up too. I suspect you deserve a better best friend and I hope you find one.
joble
For now I better focus being best friend to myself, but yeah it's life. Just bit too much for too little time and I really feel overwhelmed. It's weird how that tipped the boat, but now I'm kinda happy feeling all this, feel alive, part of human experience.
adrianontherocks
That’s a really great, mature stance to have!
