As ugly as this Cybertruck is, there's a lot of neat features I'd like to see offered on more large pickups. It's already got almost 150,000 orders. I'm interested to see how it does overall sales wise, how effective it's features end up being in the end product, and how it develops in the next few years.

FP Edit: Oh neat, first time in Most Viral. Thanks y'all. If you're inclined to send something, send something that brings you joy. Also if you're able financially, consider helping @TheFreePizzaDude in his weekly crusade to feed folks that are struggling.

How well does it handle crashes since it doesn't crumple?

Not relying on fuel is nice but I imagine part replacement is a pain in the ass, especially considering Teslas current rep in that regard

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Someone needs to learn what the word “ablative” means. It’s not something that applies to all armor.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I'll take it, but only if it comes with this paint job

6 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

When your paying the price of the vehicle, you can probably afford a proffessional custom paintjib

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

People say its ugly, i think its blade runner chique and i want it.

6 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 6

Those are separate things though. i think it's fugly but that is hardly something I look for in a car anyways. Course I can't pay one but we

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Definitely. I love it.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Ugly as Fuck

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

"Armored glass"

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Better hope the electronics don't fail and that you can pop out door handle from outside.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They already have a solution for that in all Tesla vehicles that enable the door to open in emergency situations

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That truck looks like my game doesn't wanna load right.

6 years ago | Likes 134 Dislikes 3

Or the graphics are set to ultra low. Lol

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm waiting for the 16 bit version to come out.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

6 years ago | Likes 349 Dislikes 8

That gave me a laugh.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

The sledgehammer pre-damaged the window and the back window wasn't armor glass. Hindsight is 2020 or 2019 in this case. I still want it.

6 years ago | Likes 85 Dislikes 7

Also it's impact resistant, the main thing was that the big ass ball bearing didn't go through the window (in either window) there's no 1/

6 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 3

such thing as impact proof glass, impact resistant is the best we can do... You can then layer those to get better and better protection 2/2

6 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 3

PS. I want one too! When we get ours lets go have a demolition derby with them? That would probably be fun and actually leave the cars in 1/

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

drivable condition thanks to how well built and heavy duty they are ? 2/2

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

So Are the side mirrors an extra fee?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Camera’s no need for drag of mirrors.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is that street legal?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No. You need one on the driver's side at minimum in California, probably in the rest of the US too.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"5x the torque of an Abrams?" Tesla = 1k lb/ft, the Abrams = 2.75K lb/ft. Seems that's off by about 1500%

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Context is everything- the 2.75K on the Abrams is max torque at running RPM. At 5 RPM the Tesla probably has it beat.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Which makes a valid point that the Teslas power being available throughout the RPM band makes for smooth power and thus a bit more control.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No doubt, but the overall power claim is false, even if the driveability is better.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It does kind of resemble a Warthog from Halo.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

>priced below large conventional trucks. The base truck costs the same as a crew cab F-350, the trip motor one is 20k more than a diesel

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Tri-motor

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just want to see an air compressor put in more trucks with adj. suspension. Would be DOPE

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ram already offers this.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I did say more trucks

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sorry, read it as you saying this was a new feature introduced by Tesla.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You can run a welder off of it too.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Have to admit I don't like this trend of ultra aggressive trucks and planning for some apocalyptic future.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

...I'm dubious that an electric driven truck has 5x the torque of an MTB

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Torque is cheap for electric. The tricky part is batteries.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Might be some journalist who cannot math. Truck has x0.5 the torque of an M1 Abrams: 1,356 Nm for the pickup, vs 2,750Nm for the tank.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

there is a reason modern trains have a diesel power electric motors rather than run diesel directly: FAR more torque at lower speeds.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There is a misconception that electric cars are weaker then gas ones, which is completly false. In fact the oposite. Electric cars have all

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Their power accessable at any moment, whereas gas cars dont. Not to mention electric motors can be incredibly powerful these days.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Having driven an electric car before, I dont doubt this at all.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Interesting. My bad.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The fuck's a boogaloo

6 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 3

Breakin' 2: Electric

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A lot of preppers/2a people call a possible future US civil war/conflict "the [coming] boogaloo"

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's old, old military slang for a Cannoneer, aka Gun Bunny. Their MoS is 13B. They're also called Red Legs.

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 3

"Headlight fluid" with more words.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My American radar just blew up all over this comment

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I VERY HIGHLY doubt it has 19, 750lb-ft of torque.

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 8

People just think it's ugly because it's different, in 10 years it's gonna be normal

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think this truck would sell better if the sides above the bed were optional. Can't load it from the side

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Is that a common feature in recreational trucks?

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Normally there isn't big angular sides blocking the bed of the truck

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Unless it’s a Chevy avalanche, in which case it’s almost not a truck

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not a huge fan of the look, but it’s a massive step in the right direction as far as utility. It’s the future

6 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 7

To big, to heavy, cant be future, I mean not every car ovner can drive big cars, resourses wont last for that

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Utility? How many bullets are going to get shot at you?

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

Utility as far as towing power, drive range. Eliminating the cost of gas and diesel while blowing the power of standard trucks is good.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In 'Murica, we eat bullets for breakfast.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't mind the design, but knowing Musk, I'm not surprised he'd laying the foundations for a citizen uprising. Already got the flamethrows

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

No, no... Those are specifically Not a Flamethrowers ;)

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Couldn't even type the whole word, you wanted to add 2 more?

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Have you stopped to look at the demographic of Tesla owners? That crowd dies in the first wave of any societal breakdown. Yeah, I said it

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The people Musk sells most of his stuff to, are the people who would go on a 2 year holiday in the bahamas during a citizens uprising

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can only be serviced and repaired by the manufactu.... Ahh crap.

6 years ago | Likes 278 Dislikes 6

This isn't going to stop people from modding the fuck out of these things

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But you're not changing the oil every 5k miles. EV's only need brakes, tires, & cabin filters; software updates can be done from home.

6 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 4

motor oil is only one thing - there are still other mechanical mechanisms that need lubrication...

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I thought we were talking post apocalyptic setting? Good luck with those software updates and spare parts.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Eventually everything on any auto electric or not will break down and need repair.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

This ensures many of us will never buy. Tesla is very opposed to "right to repair".

6 years ago | Likes 146 Dislikes 10

*2040 in the cyber dustbowl future* Musky: "WHO RULE BATTERYTOWN?" Crowd of Cyber Wastelanders "MUSKYBLASTER! MUSKYBLASTER!"

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Theyre like the apple of cars

6 years ago | Likes 95 Dislikes 8

Except Electronics Satan wouldn't be caught dead with Tesla's QA.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Apples QA isn't exactly better, look at their butterfly keyboard or vesa mounts.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd say Tesla's is more along the lines of having regular scissor-switches that fail too often. At least with the butterfly comparison.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Eh. I think Mercedes and Porsche are the same. Non-descript trucks, and car covered so that people don't think it's a merc. or porsche.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I’m on board with right to repair as an ideology but rarely does right to repair lead to the most efficient product.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

(and workers rights. and human rights in general)

6 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 15

Almost like it is a corporation that only exists to maximize profits.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Gee you're right! Really makes you think!

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Which is quite amazing, because, IIRC, it hasn't been profitable for more than a year of its life, so far.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Wait, people find it ugly? I always thought it was kinda good looking.

6 years ago | Likes 307 Dislikes 64

“Always”

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

A turn of phrase.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It looks like the precursor to the futuristic car designs sci-fi has had for years. I love the potential change it might bring.

6 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

I am on your side with this. The first thing I thought when I saw it was "That car looks awesome", before knowing anything about it.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

the only thing i dont like about it is the naked expanse of nothing on the front, not pictured here, but thats a very minor gripe.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Have you not been on the Internet in the last week?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can’t get over the hexagonal wheel wells.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I think it looks incredible.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can’t decide if I like it or not.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought it looked cool but good thing i never told anyone that cause all my friends started talking about it and laughing at the design..

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Dare to have opinions that are controversial within your group of friends.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I love ant want!

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd say it's rather uninteresting, but not ugly.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

iv never wanted a truck. until i saw this beautiful baby

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can understand why people find it ugly but I really like how different it looks. It looks super cool to me.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This has been my opinion. I get what people are saying that it looks “weird” and all that, but I love it, weird doesn’t mean bad in art, 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

why is this different? Doesn’t need to look like a truck. No big engine or plumbing. They can make more extremmse aesthetic choices 2/2

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I guess it wouldve generated a lot less internet attention if it looked more appealing

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's ugly but it's utility should overcome objections.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's got a good foundation if you squint, just could use some body lines and a design for the front/rear lights. Pointy roof kills it for me

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, IMO it's fugly. It makes the Aztec look good.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

No. Nothing will ever make the Aztec look good.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

it is honestly on par with the Aztec. It's ungainly and awkward and the air suspension makes it look like it's pants are falling down.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I love how it looks. Maybe it’s just the old generations that want to cling to century old looks...

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's a big nope

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't hate it. Glad I'm not alone.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The Rivian is super ugly.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's growing on me. I'd definitely consider getting one if I could afford it.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Always..its been revealed 5 minutse ago

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's a turn of phrase, bud. 5 minutes... it's been revealed for days.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

I think it's the bare metal color that makes it look ugly. I saw an ahegao skin and the Dixie Cup pattern and both look better than bare tbh

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I personally love the look, haters gonna hate

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Its growing on me

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It’s continually fluctuating for me. Kind of settling on liking it. Having controversial looks is a boon for Tesla, I think. 1/

6 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 1

Controversy is what keeps Musk and most of his projects afloat. As much as I hate him, he is very good at PR exploitation

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Everyone is talking about it. If they just made a model x with a bed or something that looked like a Chevy, it’d be largely ignored.

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

True. Like P.T. Barnum said, there's no such thing as bad publicity.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Whoa, I mean he is married, so someone found him attractive.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm pretty neutral about it. That said, I'd love to hear more about the reasoning for these. For example, if the geometries make it (1)

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Engineering studies mostly.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

sturdier, stiffer, more aerodynamic, create more room inside, give better visibility from windows etc.? If the shape improves (2)

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

functionality, then my opinion will likely quickly turn to the positive side. (3/3)

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

lamborghini have done the whole angular and jagged shit for years and its still fugly. I prefer this.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

People just don't like change. They want the boring truck design that hasn't really changed much in a century

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

A lot of folks are giving it hell for it's aesthetics. I'm all about function over form. Seems like it's gonna be rad!

6 years ago | Likes 118 Dislikes 5

This kind of fails on both, though.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Shape is all about timing. When Pontiac built the Aztec, the market said “Nope”. Now, “Maybe”.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

People hated the DeLorean as well. Now people love them. Wait until a cool movie uses one. Then it will be the shit.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Function over form, and yet no side mirrors?

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Side mirrors are terrible for aero, which reduces range a lot

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'd have to see the console inside to see if it's replaced mirrors with cameras

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

It’s also a good price. Only issue is powering it, but I suppose, if you were really worried you could put a multi fuel generator in the bed

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

THEN WHY THE FUCK EVEN BUY A..... jesus christ, fuckin forget it.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Like anyone using a pickup has trouble accessing high-powered electrical outlets. RV parks are an easy place to charge it, it doesn't have >

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

to be a Tesla supercharger, just more than your standard 115V wall plug. If you can plug high-powered tools in, it can charge the car.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think I read it would have something like a 500 mile range, and an option for solar trickle charging in addition to normal charging option

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

250 for base. 500 mile range is the like $70k version. There are ferraris in that price range.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

What new ferrari can you buy for 70k ?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Until that first .30 bullet punctures a battery pack, then it’s a Roman candle.

6 years ago | Likes 990 Dislikes 28

Can install 1/2" titanium plating around battery replacing housing then good for up to .50 cal

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I wonder how thick the titanium housing already is. I know they plated it up after that one battery fire due to road debris.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

6 years ago | Likes 339 Dislikes 1

What happens next will shock you!

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's coming in 2021, not sure if it's even gonna use lithium by that point

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

No other battery tech is viable yet, even if that changes in 2 years they won't have enough manu. capacity for it by then. It'll be Lithium.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I've heard that they are making big progress in solid state batteries, however i havn't had the time to look it up.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And the "impact resistant" glass was "SUPPOSED" to be bullet proof. Mr. Musk was LIVID when metal ball bearing busted it. Where was Q.C.?

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

QC test was flawed in that the mount for the glass allowed more travel (AKA shock absorbtion) than how it was mounted in the actual truck.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't the battery compartments have a Kevlar layer since one shorted in a car accident?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I like how we’re worried about the flammable batteries and not the guy shooting at us with a .30 cal. =]

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

add more steel, problem solved.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well don't shoot it, then.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

...even if a gasoline tank was any more safe... sort of an American issue.. soo... don't care!

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Just wait for solid state batterys.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

You mean super/ultra/mega/teracapacitors? Yeah, those won’t blow up spectacularly either

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

We need some brrrrrrrrrrrt cabin armor around the battery cells.

6 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 2

Literally nothing you can put in a vehicle can stop 30mm. And if it’s depleted uranium, you’re extra fucked.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

At the point where someone is shooting at you with depleted uranium rounds, it doesn't much matter what kind of vehicle you are in.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Half the car is battery cells.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I don’t know many places where you can get a Tesla and 30 cal is still used. Unless you mean 30mm in which case everything dies

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Until we get solid-state batteries, and then no such risk. Should hopefully be coming to production vehicles in the mid 2020s. 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Increased range, reduction in weight, far far less fire hazard, and can be made with sodium, not lithium, making them vastly cheaper.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Reference to research or anything? I'm interested

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

the moment solid state lithium batteries hit the market you can bet they'll switch to them

6 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

They bought the company

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They'll probably be the ones to take them to market, given their recent acquisitions.

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

.30 caliber is still small arms.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Hahaha. No. Just no. My .303 punches 1/4” steel plate with steel-core ammo on the regular

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think that guy was thinking of the .380, but either way I don’t see the gov’t side employing my great grandpa with his M1 to fight us soon

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You know the cops actually use .308 (slightly better ballistics than .303) w regularity and .223 will punch that stainless easy too.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They said it'll stop 9mm. 3mm of steel isn't going to stop. 30.

6 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

wait... it's only got 3mm of RHA? Bwahahahaha! This thing's gonna be swiss cheese when real bullets start flying.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

It's a production vehicle, not AFV, so it's not armor. The fact that the panels stop a9mm is impressive. You need thick plate to stop rifle.

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

There's nothing impressive about stopping 9mm rounds, it's an extremely low bar.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hmm I disagree. With the way it's being marketed, it should do more than the avg car. (I'd bet the avg car could stop 9mms frontally)

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Good thing gasoline never catches fire. Thats why i keep all my family and pets travelling at high speeds on gallons of stable safe tastygas

6 years ago | Likes 498 Dislikes 27

Vapor form is the key. As a liquid it's a lot harder to ignite. That being said, the batteries also wouldn't just combust. Not instantly

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Gas burns like a fireplace, lithium batteries burn like a solid rocket.

6 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 1

Nope.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 22

Shooting a gas tank won’t do much other than make you lose gas quicker

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

While gasoline is flammable it requires oxygen to burn an can be put out once ignited. Lithium cells do not require O2 and continue to burn

6 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 10

Yeah scary as fuck once it starts run and nothing will be salvageable

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's a slow fire.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sure, putting out a gasoline fire is easier, but either way you should leave any burning vehicle you're in and the vehicle is a total loss.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

They do require water, however, which they usually get through humidity in air. There's a lot more oxygen in air than water.

6 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

It's not the lithium that burns... it's the shear amount of stored energy that is released on short circuits...

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

That's not how battery fires work. Stored energy requires a chemical reaction to retrieve, if you destroy the battery, you kill the reaction

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Kinda like saying it's not that gas burns but instead is releasing the energy stored. Kinda what fire is mate

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

They batteries also have emergency cut-offs and impact resistant casing so they're still harder to ignite.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

ICE cars also have oil, transmission fluids, lead acid battery, power steering fluid, and brake fluid that could all puncture and ignite.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Doubt they're made to withstand gunfire though. course hardly a realistic scenario :p

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Neither are gas tanks, and even though Hollywood loves showing how easily those blow up, the reality is nothing happens if you shoot one.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

it blows my mind how people think batteries are easier to ignite than a literal (internal) combustion vehicle

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

I think it's more a matter of which is more dangerous when it does go up. You need a lot of petrol leaking for an explosion, but 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

This other guy beat me to it - not extiguishable

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's not just about easier to ignite, it's about harder to extinguish, ignition vulnerability from mechanical damage, thousands of 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Watch the mythbusters episode about shooting a gas tank. They don't go up like they do in the movies.

6 years ago | Likes 167 Dislikes 9

nor does batteries.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A car has fuel lines & multiple ignition sources. Even if the gas tank doesn't explode, it's easy to cause an oil/fuel leak & start a fire.

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

AS someone who’s car has burnt to the ground:

6 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 8

Shooting a gas tank could cause a fire if it hits the hot exhaust, but usually it's a fuel line near the engine that causes cars to burn.

6 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

That's only if you're shooting directly into a gas tank. Shooting a car's engine can rupture gas lines & turn it into a bomb just as quick.

6 years ago | Likes 104 Dislikes 7

Is gas diesel or petrol?

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Benzin

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Gas usually refers to petrol

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Gas, short for gasoline, is the original 1864 name for the product referred to in Commonwealth countries as "petrol" since 1870.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

While technically true, that's pure luck considering the size of the target you have to hit, how buried it is, and metal isn't see-through

6 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 1

True but when taking cover a smart person hides on the engine side b/c the engine will stop the bullets from going all the way through.

Kinda the same as kitting a small battery system that's tucked up behind motors.

Kinda the same as hitting the ammo storage of a humvee and watching the cook-off kill everyone inside, perhaps?

So a ruptured gas tank explosion is okay? I'll take a steady fire over a sudden explosion any day of the week, thanks.

You gotta do less Hollywood.

The majority of real explosions you see in films are gasoline explosions specifically because it's so volatile. >>

<< While a bullet isn't likely to ignite gasoline, the fumes could be ignited from static to bullets sparking as they strike the vehicle

Didn’t mythbusters overwhelmingly disprove that?

Gasoline augmented by other explosives, not just gasoline.

You know a film is high quality when they use Kerosene :)

I've seen real gas-tank explosions. They're not the same as Hollywood ones with dynamite, but they do genuinely explode.

But bullets don’t set them off. Bullets will basically only poke holes in your gas tank if mythbusters was accurate

Bullets won't, but the sparks from other damage/ricochets will ingnite fuel that leaks from them, as will the 500-800C catalytic converter.

Gasoline cars catch fire at something like 35-50 times the frequency of Teslas in the real world

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 5

Because there are 35-50 times conventional fuel vehicles?

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

That's per miles driven. Even accounting for the 3-4x more accidents gas cars get in compared to Teslas, they're still way more prone to >

not to mention a lot of them are old and poorly maintained

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Hundreds. Maybe thousands. Many of them far longer-lived than Teslas are showing to be.

No, like-for-like. Fuel lines are rubber hoses that perish with age, with steel clips that rust. Chances of fuel leak are pretty high really
