Chip sounds a little triggered. I wonder why?

The fundamentalist sycophant cycle of escalating attacks is on. Everyone of them is going to try to ‘one-up’ and ‘out-do’ each other to claim the moral high ground.
Chandraven
It should come as no surprise to anyone with a functioning brain that a large portion of our armed forces are not heterosexual. I retired from the military with FAR FAR FAR more lgbtq friends than I ever would've imagined. They just don't tell anyone most of the time because...well Republicans are fucking terrorists.

Chippy probably would get real mad if he found out that the DOD has officially supported drag shows since the 1940s. https://archive.org/details/mdu-scpa-031091/mode/2up

“Represent Americans who are livid with this stuff” actually the majority of the country, at worst, doesnt care, and at best, supports this. Shut up, Chip
FiftyShadesOfMascarpone
Weird that they never gave a damn about their constituents who were livid with the lack of gun control or universal healthcare. The only ones that matter are those who are livid that minorities exist.

“How dare the military show drag shows?” Oh. Oh man. Oh you poor cIueless child.

To be fair, rainbow uniforms would be fuckin' SICK.

GD why is it always seem like my state just pushes for the worst crap? His district somehow reaches into downtown San Antonio and Austin and out west over 100 miles to gerrymander all those red areas to over ride the blue in the major cities.

How do we get the NRA to host pride events

I love this idea. Even if it can't/won't happen for real, can we fake it? Can we fool enough idiots into thinking the NRA has pride events, so they all start burning their guns or something?

Blanket ban on drag in the military will leave them seriously fucked for entertainment when deployed. My grandfather probably saw men in drag in plays and shows in the military, my great grandfather ditto.

it's bizarre how the right-wingers are suddenly demonizing something we've been seeing as a gag in classic Looney Tunes cartoons for decades now.

Me thinks many of these lawmakers and X-tian fundies doth protest too much... The ONLY reason ever given for being "uncomfortable" with the sexuality of others is religion, and most religions teach you to be ashamed of, and ignore your own sexuality. That leads to repression and being uncomfortable with your own, so how can you be comfortable with that of others? >1/2
theInfinitelyProlonged
<2/2 I knew a woman who often commented on other women, especially celebrities. She commented on their attractiveness, and just generally came across as being attracted TO them. When someone asked if this was the case, she replied, "I can't be, being gay is against my religion." She got angry when I said, "If your religion tells you you're wrong for being who you are, YOU'RE not the one who is wrong, your religion is." If you can't accept your own, you can't accept that of others.
TinaRo
This is like.. the LEAST offensive thing the military has ever done.

This gives me a Great Idea! Hey Everyone! Coal is Gay Now! That's right we have claimed it! Coal is all about men loving men now! While we are at it, fracking is specifically Men loving femboys. Fossil Fuels are so so gay

Keep this in your back pocket for the next time some Republiclown says that they support the military.
FancySharkDinnerParty
They support the military in the same way they're Christian; it's all lip service and a means to an end. They want to maintain the veneer of being a God-fearing, Red-blooded American Patriot™ but they're spineless, cold-hearted assholes who are ultimately only in it for themselves.
unremarkableasterisk
Oh, they support the military. Unfortunately, they merely conflate support with the use of the military for their worthless and ill-advised wars which enriches themselves and their handlers.
FancySharkDinnerParty
Shut the fuck up, Chip. I served during the Don't Ask, Don't Tell era where service members could get kicked out if they were outed and they weren't allowed to marry their partners. I served side by side with people that were enlisted and were serving their country in spite of the government's hostile stance towards them; I don't remember seeing Chip Roy's bitch ass in Iraq during any of my deployments.
vegivamp
I understand... But let them. It's the fastest way to get them completely, utterly obliterated. Imagine what'd happen if the GOP removed trillions in military-industrial complex funding.
Chandraven
I have a close friend who retired right after I did. He served during the DADT times as a gay man and to say he was afraid was an understatement. One of the most useful and intelligent SNCOs I ever met in my career. Literally scared of his brothers in arms who called themselves Republicans because he knew how full of hate they are.
Highrelease
Semper Fi! Fuck Chip! He's the type of guy who wouldn't lose sleep over sending a whole generation of kids to the next Vietnam.
MrHabs
It's great that these old lazy pathetic fucktards get paid by taxpayers for their cushy job where this sit on their asses and yet sit there and tell service members they can't express their sexuality when they themselves haven't lifted a fucking finger in defense of the country.
ShamaOA
You wouldn't have, largely because according to his own account he was all set to be a lawyer, but 9/11 persuaded him to become a heroic politician instead. Another crime to be laid at the door of Al Qaeda.
AndroidSoul
But how can you expect red-booded, corn-fed hillbillies to willingly die for their country if they know they might have to be part of a team with people who are openly women or gay? /s
BrdCdn
They are too out of shape to make the medical anyways.
NappaTheFriendlyGhost
When you need to GTFO of a place where it is literally raining bullets and a person starts shooting back to give you an opening you don’t give a flying fuck what color or gender they are. When you’re bleeding to death and someone ties a tourniquet to your leg you couldn’t care less about their religious beliefs. The only thing that matters is that they are on your side.
Sinasohn
If I may ask an honest question... when the military was eliminating DADT, there were repugs, including in congress, who suggested that members of the military might be uncomfortable serving alongside openly gay servicemen/women and that currently serving folks should be asked if they were okay with it (assuming, I think, that the answer would be no). It seemed silly to me in that we don't ask soldiers if they're okay with going off to X to fight in a war and whatnot. I always thought >
Sinasohn
members of the military did what they were told (generally speaking) -- it's one of the reasons I knew I would not be a good fit to join up. Am I way off base? Would those serving expect to be asked if they were okay with gay soldiers? Or would they expect to be told they were going to be serving side-by-side and they'd just have to deal with it? (I'm not asking about should the LGBTQ+ community be allowed to serve but if members of the military would expect to be asked about it.)
FancySharkDinnerParty
If anyone were asked it'd probably only be the top brass and it would likely only be for logistics input. Everyone is expected to do their jobs and to follow orders *UNLESS* the order is illegal/unlawful, and you better be absolutely correct that it was an illegal order or that's your ass.
Sinasohn
Thanks. That's what I thought. It was the spineless cowards who wouldn't even consider endangering themselves that made that suggestion.
ArchMagos
I saw the repeal of DADT while I was in. It was like a weight lifted for a bunch of my shipmates. Fun fact: there is an over representation of LGBTQ people in the US military. So being lgbtq means you are more likely to be a true patriot (according to that shitgibbon's beliefs).
jwhennig
We had a guy after DADT was repealed come to us and try to come out. We looked at him and said, “And?” He was astonished we knew. And we didn’t care that he was gay. He was our friend and shipmate (ugh). That’s all that mattered.
jwhennig
Hear, hear! We had drag shows on board the sub because it was harmless fun in a difficult environment. Fuck these right wing pricks that are too scared to go to the wars they start.
discitus
Drag has a long history in military forces. People in hard times need entertainment, and drag shows with plays, comedy and music were part of that in both world wars. Going further back, men in women's clothing was a regular part of theatre in general. Traditional western theatre had men playing every part, and someone needed to be Juliet after all. Today's "conservatives" don't give a crap about history or tradition or they wouldn't be banning it.
jwhennig
Absolutely.
spookyu
Submariners are a....unique breed, but not because of the 20,000 Leagues drag shows lol. Just poking fun, I had several good friends that confided in me during DADT, I'm glad it's gone and people can be who they want to be while enlisted. Fuck the GOP, they have zero qualms over holding hostage the pay, living conditions, medical care, etc. of active duty and veterans. That used to be political suicide, now it's their go-to. Pissing off the wrong people...
jwhennig
We are special in all senses of the term.
Cooper1977
LET'S FUCKIN' GOOOOOO! Defund the military, let's use those hundreds of billions of dollars for better things like affordable housing, infrastructure, services for veterans and the homeless, education, space exploration...
spookyu
As a vet, I'm all for it, because I understand (and we all should) that it's the same premise as defunding the police - purposefully reallocating funds to reach the same goal of safety and security, while doing it in a more humane way for ALL, and (this is the *important* part) not hurting the actual enlisted, officers, and federal civilian employees
Skizzlesnap
Aw shit. Just more tax cuts for the wealthy….
ENCHANTMEN
We can afford all of those things AND the military, though. Just not all those things and billionaires
spookyu
We could maintain our military readiness as-is if we reigned in the defense contractors, that's where *****ALL***** of the budget increases go, right into Boeing/Lockheed/Raytheon's pockets (and the politicians they bought out). The actual pay, upkeep, and costs associated with maintaining readiness is tiny compared to what the defense contractors rake in. Go figure, privatizing huge aspects of national defense DIDN'T save us money, who would've thought? /s
Simusar
To add to this, on base housing at some bases, is terrible. Mold and rot and other damage that would list a house as condemned for civilians, is considered A-OK for service members. Just because the spending budget goes up doesn't mean that the service members see any of that money.
spookyu
Same story with on-base schools. Not to mention on top of it all, a few years ago Trump redirected funds dedicated to update and build new schools for the "border wall" sham.

That's the exact cost of fascism. The facade must be 100% unbreakable, because the moment there's a crack in it, people start wondering if giving up their rights is actually worth it.
zxwaffen
Being extremely mad because the Air Force doing a big Pride event means that their published memos about moving personnel away from states that are unfriendly and may jeopardize bases isn't just some idle Twitter commentary, and red states might actually get fucked real hard by bases being deprioritized. The AF is committed to supporting the lives and health of their members and dependants.
ThatRaccoonGuy
So if we have the cops do a pride parade will the GOP finally agree to defund the police?
SeeShark
On one hand, probably. On the other hand, many queer groups really dislike cops at Pride.
Darklinkinfinite
Or we can charge Trump with a crime and the GOP couldn’t defund them fast enough
ThatRaccoonGuy
Police aren't prosecuting Trump, and they're already trying to defund the departments that investigate politicians

Not gonna lie its kind of adorable you that any of you think that the american people would see a nickle of that money and that it would not be instantly diverted to some unwanted program to pay for bureaucracy.....people those in congress do not care about you....wake the fuck up and vote them out.....and get both term limits and transparent financials established for politicians in all branches

Nothing cause congress would blow through that in under a day.......congress's spending is out of control if they defund the military you can fucking bet it won't go to anything that benefits the people only to stuff that benefits congress
JustUsLeagueUnlimited
1of2] Let's cut the budget in half. Sink a couple super-carriers. Decommission some missile silos. And get rid of at least half of our nukes. Bingo bango. HUD says around 600k are homeless. That's enough to give every homeless person a decent, but relatively small house... and still have around 300 billion left... Thats enough to fully fund dozens of top of the line libraries in each state... and still have around 150 billion left. Thats enough to provide dental care for 10 million Americans...
JustUsLeagueUnlimited
2of2] ... and still have around 50 billion left. According to ARTBA, around 30% of Americas failing bridges need to be repaired and it would cost around $42 billion... pay for that and we'd still have $8 billion remaining. That's enough to give every school district in America $400k... and still have enough left over to buy me a fucking beer. That beer would do more for me than those supercarriers, missile silos, and nukes
LaughingInTheFaceOfDanger
The US could still have the largest military and have everyone driving flying cars if they allocated the funding smarter

the 3.1% of our GDP we spend on military is massive overkill. Let's dial it back a bit, at least until all NATO members are up to 2%

Nearly half of that amount is veterans benefits. People tend to forget that.

Even if they were defunding the military, it wouldn't be the whole $857 billion, probably only a few billion at most.

“A few billion” could still do massive amounts of good in major sectors like healthcare, education, or housing.

dragonflyy69
a year!
JoshuaFalken
Like, the number or the actual money? Cuz it's whats budgeted annually and the money comes from the same place it always has...debt. Don't worry though. We'll inflate our way out of it.
DorkJedi
this is false. the money comes from taxes and such. SOME of it is from debt. But only a small portion.
JoshuaFalken
Lol...You're joking, right? The USA is $32 trillion in debt. That's a number so big that humans have trouble grasping the concept. That number continues to grow every year. If we are spending more money than we are bringing in with taxes, how are we paying for it? I'll give you three guesses.
