To make it worth it, I'd have to research and write the article within around an hour and a half. That meant finding and resizing images, coming up with a good argument and sending it off. I'd choose from a list of article topics, and try to make it work.

I think it was because I said "allegedly" because I researched something online, and couldn't prove it was true so I wanted to be accurate. My article was edited and posted, allegedly was taken out and like I thought, it didn't turn out to be true. Article is still up.

I thought I'd be getting an upgrade given my background of over 90 articles, but they couldn't "afford" to pay more. I've edited 18 full length novels, got a 15 page academic paper used as an example for future classes at a university and I just want to find a fit where I can afford to work part time with my disability.

I'm really happy, I've written two long posts so far and even though I have literally 2 followers (and need 100 to apply for a program to get paid) I'm going to see if writing more will increase traffic. In the meantime looking for any paid work with writing or editing, edited my resume so my fancy design wasn't thrown out by ATS software, and hoping I can find a good source of income to support my mom.
Times are tough but at least I'm doing what I love.

Was told to put it in the post description. https://medium.com/@The_RPG_Kraken for those curious!

Edit: THANK YOU! 100 SUBSCRIBERS! I can do the premium program now! My friend figured out that the 5.00 a month subscribers are the ones whose payment goes to the stories, so I'll be writing both free and paid content. :) I cannot thank you all enough. This community is great and I hope it thrives.

Bro there's technology where a computer can write for you, then just make the changes you need. Jarvis. It's Ai. Something to consider

May you always find water and shade. :)

Yeah I would look into writing in other fields. Games media is a very dense market (in more ways than one) and pretty exploitative.

Yep, looking for jobs there too!

No wonder gaming "journalism" is full of semi-aborted bags of shit like this

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

That's not even the worst stuff. The worst stuff are the articles that explain basic mechanics one page at a time for 10 year old games.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And somehow end up on top of google search results every time. GameFAQs was a better resource 20 years ago.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeaaah, I hear that.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Clock bait.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How could you possibly support someone, let alone multiple people, unless you're writing 2r hours a day 7 days a week? Damn

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

EXACTLY. And I was told they couldn't afford 10.00. Then don't be a business!

There is sites that translate novels that need editors with good English https://forum.novelupdates.com/forums/translators-corner.1026/

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Ahhh thanks! I'm guessing I don't need another language for that?

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The translators do that part, you take what was translated and make it easily readable and proper so forth.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Are they paid at all? This sounds fantastic, I appreciate the insight.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes there is paid positions for it, what the pay is I have no clue, my editing is not passable so I never tried. I just like reading.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I'll check it out :)

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

At my peak of writing before going back to EMS I was making $400 per article. Charge more

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was told by someone in the industry that I needed a following before applying to jobs that give that, hence Medium, then seeing their (1/2

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Partner program. Interested in what you wrote about that got you that!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For a 1000 word article, you'd be getting a penny a word. Literally the rate pulp fiction writers in the 1940s got, with no inflation!

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Owww yeah ow that makes sense, damn

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

/a/zIjmWgP Thanks for this. Felt good to send.

I got a job translating French to English and putting the results into DOCS and PDF files. Standard pay for that is $80/hr. I got $10/hr.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I was between real jobs at the time. The terms of my unemployment comp said I had to accept any job offer no matter how lame.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Are things better now? I hear you though.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not really. I have hope for next year. I've had major non-covid health issues since early 2020 but that seems almost over.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm rooting for you. You got this.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks. And may good health and good fortune be yours for all your days.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wow, I used to write tech related articles for an online tech website. As a freelancer, I made $1,000 per article, 800 words max.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Tech is a different beast it seems. Everyone wants to write videogames, so low demand.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*tugs braid* @op keep trying. Are you applying for copywriter work?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'll start doing that again!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And if you’re able, try to find some freelance work doing websites/blog posts (and learn about seo). Website stuff pays pretty well

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I did websites for a bit : ) just had trouble getting clients since back then it was in person.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Even better then! Get a full time position in-house for that corporate money! GL

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@op I don’t know what Medium is but I’d follow Lord Mat anywhere. Just gotta borrow a horse first…

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hang in there, man. I've been there. Unfortunately, networking is a huge part of the job. I eventually tapped out and went to law school.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Law has been fine. The subject matter is less fun, but it pays a lot better, and I still get to write copy and edit things.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was very glad to learn that I can network online and being in the middle of bumblefk nowhere didn't matter. I'm glad for you :)

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

About 10yrs ago, as a side gig for fun, I wrote technical reviews for a large online publication, got paid $800USD per review. 1)

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It was hard to find engineers who could write a decent review for a heavily technical topic and make it interesting 2)

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Also got to travel the world going to conferences and product launches all on someone else's dime 3)

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Eventually leveraged it to get a marketing job that paid 30% more than my eng.job. New job didn't care about my eng expertise 4)

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just that I wrote for a very well known website. Long story short, use that experience to g something better 5)

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That is fantastic. Good for you!

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Gtfo man. Even 10 USD is joke. Not worthy of time. That's media slavery

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you see any lesser known publications like Screen Rant, TheGamer, etc. that's what those authors are being paid. They exploit gaming love

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I concur. You need to write yourself to death to pay rent ..

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And when I tried that, writing faster for more pay, I was fired because their editors were doing too much work

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Make your own gaming blog with that amount of content output! Dive into SEO and affiliate marketing. Blockchain gaming is trending up too.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'll research it :)

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sounds like you have a lot of skills I need to improve on! What's blockchain gaming and affiliate marketing?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

99 followers sad I couldn't the the 100th :p. Especially after seeing the love for dark cloud immediately - one of my favorites

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My man! Thanks for reading. :) Very nice username as well. I'll grab some grape juice and we can head to the Firbit's house.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You can do better collecting bottles on the road...

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ahahaha fantastic comparison. Thank you.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And if you want send me your portfolio I'm always looking for freelancers

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'll message you! Absolutely, thank you

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's exhausting and honestly I still haven't figured out a way to not work 80-90 hrs/wk but it's better than it was by far

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's some insane stamina, I'm glad you're surviving

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah I break down in tears sometimes still lol but it's def getting better, people will pay what you believe you're worth

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's the biggest thing, isn't it? I feel bad asking for more. Currently working on that.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Was this Screenrant by any chance? Or any of their websites?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

TheGamer for the 10.00 ones.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We have all been there. It is bullshit.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm grateful for the medium subs I got and the few jobs from this post from people messaging me. Things feel better, but yeah, it is.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

These prices are criminal! You should be paid by word/line/page or work hrs. I wouldn't even open my laptop for any article that pays <50$.

4 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 2

Exactly. I was once offered about 5 USD for news and 20 USD for article (12 000 letters) and i rather opened Minecraft than do that.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Good on you for doing your own thing and best of luck with your page!

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Thank you!! I was going to find another 10.00 publication but no, more worth it to do my own work and choose what I write.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Smart decision! You seem to have the knowledge/skill, the readers will come, and with the demand hopefully better pay. Best of luck!!!

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

<3 :)

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I write content at .2 a word and that's cheap for what I do.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

damn i work in basically a third world country and still earn 0.1 per word, i would not write an article for 10$ D:

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Link your Medium profile. I'm sure a lot of people on here would gladly follow you. Blood and bloody ashes, man!

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Signed up and followed. As a fellow member of the game industry, I understand the struggle.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thanks man :) great username too. You write?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Kinda? I did the work to get to that point, but went in a different direction. Used to be a professional gamemaster, now I'm opening a shop.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dude that's awesome. I'm happy for you, sounds like the life

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've had a Medium account for some time now. Followed ya.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I appreciate it! I'm going to be writing more in the next day or so. If my partner program request goes through I can write paid content

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Still not sure how it works but it's possible I'll be writing articles for premium and non premium members, and earn money from premium.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My dude! You got a hundred! Now follow your dream! (Just stay away from jeweled daggers).

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I DID!!!! And I will, can't trust those things. Nor the bloody rolling dice

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

"5.00 per article"...; did they also tell you the exposure was invaluable?

4 years ago | Likes 509 Dislikes 1

I exposed myself a couple times and got asked not to shop at Ikea anymore.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nope. Nope. No. Published author here. For $5/article, @op, they can fuck off all the way to the moon and back.

4 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

As someone with low self esteem, these comments are my lifeblood

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Employers/clients are not your friends. You have a service to offer. If they don’t have the budget for you, move on — on good terms, if poss

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

People are literally insulted when you insinuate you can't live on that rate. Upwork has made things crazy

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yeah, that's why I did it to begin with. When 400 people are applying to 1 "normal" job, 10.00 sounds sane

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ya idk if I'd let people pay me to take a shit at that rate... I mean 5$ vs. time needed to write and edit is isane

4 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Simple, just pump out garbage and don't edit. Easy pz

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Idk if I would even write a steam review for a game I already played for $5.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Yeah, pretty much, like 3 paragraphs of community talk before they even said the price.

4 years ago | Likes 158 Dislikes 0

Can you disclose the names of the companies? So i can avoid them?

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You can die from exposure...

my resume is plain & unformated (other than line breaks). apparently it isn't getting kicked out because i get the occasional rejection call

4 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 2

Man I would be GLAD if I got a rejection call. Entrepreneurs around me have glass stones and no manners.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yep, exactly. Annoyed that I spent all that time designing a resume and the ATS software is messing it up. Mine is plain now.

4 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Have two. One plain for the systems. One fancy for contacts/jobfairs/networking

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Ohh that's smart. How did that not occur to me

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I also put mine in a USB with my portfolio I carried with me that I could boot up and show. Of course, security types hated that lol
