90’s kids may know this one from Acrs of the Pacific for PC. It was part of a 1946 “what if”
UpvoteBuddyJesus
You can see from the exhaust that one of the ways they got more horse power was to just throw fuel at the problem.
tehguldincalk
This thing fucks
ThankinHank
Here Kitty Kitty. I got the T-shirt.
Whatswrongwiththispicture
Grumman produced 364 and it had a 10 year run. Introduced in 1944 and retired in 1954
zHurk777
*10 yr run w limited combat experience.
MrHappySmiles
Bad ass birdy!
jammer909
P38 Lightning is still my favorite, followed by SR-71 Blackbird, but this looks good enough to take 3rd place. I need to see it's history.
Disrupter5000
But what about the P-61. Oddly beautiful
jammer909
P61 Black Widow definitely has an interesting look about it. Would have more of an opinion if I could see one fly.
Disrupter5000
True! Best I’ve seen is the place in Dayton Ohio but still a great looking bird.
CptPlaid
That sounds incredible, but can I hear a turbine?
OhIfIMust
Turbocharger?
OhIfIMust
Or maybe something else, idling on the tarmac.
yamatto
Yet an other plane I'm angry at gaijin for making shittier than it should be. Fucking warthunder.
Silentshaper
Let me fix your comment "funky gaijin for ruining warthunder " I feel your pain brother specially after the economics update
Bludabeagle
An American Mosquito???
cujohuehuedoge
Nothing quite like dehavillands wooden wonder
Canucklesammich
Looks to me like a single boom P38; similar specs (except this has much longer range)
Wolfshead009
I don't know as I'd call it "much" longer range.
Kargathia
Nah, it's clearly a plane. The Mosquitto is a grand piano with an identity crisis (and lots of style).
zHurk777
The Mosquito is a flying canoe.
zHurk777
ha ha. forgot the ha ha.
Disrupter5000
What kind of armaments did this thing have?
nemilyk
Day fighter carried 4x 20mms and 4x .50s, with 2000lbs payload of bombs/rockets, or a torpedo. Night fighter version just 4x 20mms.
Dragon10449
Why would the night fighter version drop the .50s? Needed the extra space for the radar (did it get night fighting radar)?
nemilyk
You got it right. And at the time (late 40s/early 50s), 4x20s were plenty for air-to-air combat, so the .50s were really superfluous anyway.
putcleverusernamehere
And some guy commented here recently he didn't like radial engines. Seriously? this aircraft is pure sex
zHurk777
He probably prefers the P-38, a much better looking aircraft.
putcleverusernamehere
P-38 is a cool airplane. But this one is pure muscle
JuliusPepperwoodFromChicago
Anyone that doesn’t like the sound of radial engines has no soul.
putcleverusernamehere
?
Whatswrongwiththispicture
leroy666
Check the de Haviland Mosquito, 10 or so years older, almost as fast and made of wood. Big deal in WW2.
JackieTreehornProductions
Strange that it’s faster than the P-38 by 70 mph but the 38 has a better rate of climb.
HeywouldJablowme
Why does it sound like a jet and a propeller plane?
moonweasel
Much respect for this aircraft and that low pass was awesome, but my heart (for twin engine) belongs to the Mossie, and the Beaufighter.
OhIfIMust
Beaufighter doesn’t get nearly enough love.
aman4127
Geoffrey de Havilland: *builds the mosquito*. America: "I want that, but metal instead".
12DrD21
Cool plane!
Fl0zilla
Am I alone in thinking that is sexy?

Neat! Let's put a lot of holes in it and become overnight experts on Survivor Bias.

I like to think I'm a WWII nerd and aviation guy. I've never seen this beautiful machine before
yoyo42
Seems like an American version of the Mosquito...
BidenduexMaximus
got replaced by the f3 skynight in 52
Brhino
It didn't arrive in time for WWII Combat, and had a relatively short life after the war before jets took over.
MrJackedBroccoli
That makes sense. Kind of an in between model.
mondeca
Understandable. It's a night fighter.
RuBisCO1
Greg has not covered it yet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UDMQYmoin8

He has a long list to get through and is doing good work

I’m a WWII nerd and I only know it because I love the R-2800 Double Wasp and some madman put 2 in this beast.
LurkingPleb
Any photos of that madman’s plane? Those engines … https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pratt_%26_Whitney_R-2800_Double_Wasp
OhIfIMust
Same, never heard of it until I turned a corner in a museum and there one was, practically sitting in a pool of light with angels singing!
Guantanamobaae
I’m right there with you. I thought I knew them all and in comes this beautiful bastard.
ElbowDeepInTheElbowDeepBandwagon
It doesn't get nearly enough recognition.
MrJackedBroccoli
Seems that way
risperidone
It arrive with the beginning of jet and was already obsolete.
MrJackedBroccoli
Damn.
aubricus2
Same! Thanks OP
ahbrannon1
You can buy your own for 1.3 million.
Bergleton
You’ve got a deal!
MrJackedBroccoli
Shit. Wanna go halfsies.
ahbrannon1
If I had the money I would buy it and take all my friends for the ride of a lifetime. Beautiful airplane.

She is gorgeous. https://fireaviation.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Grumman_F7F-3N_Tigercat_2007.jpg

That fuselage!
aluminumonkey
MrJackedBroccoli
Hmm big front end and a tight frame.... wait what where we talking about again.
drduffer
I’ve seen them twice. Once at the Kalamazoo Air Zoo Air Show in the 90s and here in Houston at Wings Over Houston Air Show. >
drduffer
> Kazoo show had a 4 plane flyover with a Wildcat, a Hellcat, a Tigercat, and an F-14 Tomcat. Very cool! ⬆️
SamAndJanetEvening
Got to see two of them flying together at the Chino air show years ago. What an amazing sound!
EatPieLander
I was on assignment in Kazoo back then; flight home unexpectedly canceled bc ... AIRSHOW! Front row B-29 takeoff: what a rumble! Lotta fun.
drduffer
Lucky you! ⬆️

Air Force has one in Dayton that is truly worth the trip as well. Massive
Aiolos507th
Come up to Alaska! We still fly that engine
FlyingScot
Need more power than one radial engine? Let’s add a second one right behind it!
MrJackedBroccoli
This is the biggest, fastest and most powerful we got. Cool. Cool Cool Cool. Gimme two.
BigTex1
Why not 3? Maybe 4!
letmesetthisstraight
They did that
BigTex1
6 then.

R4360
FlyingScot
I like where your head’s at, but these bad boys were air cooled, I imagine it would get pretty toasty at the end of that awesome conga line
letmesetthisstraight
They staggered the pistons, made them different heights, and incorporated the grooves noticeable in the picture to increase surface area
BigTex1
Sounds like quitter talk. It may only work once, but it will be a wild ride.
jacquesdustatefarm
Your gonna have your mind blown when I tell you about the 4 row 28 cylinder r4360.
