The Nintendo switch 2 is taking pre-orders on April 9. It is delayed for the states as they determine the tariff situation. The devices are currently made in Vietnam, where there is a 46% tariff. https://mobilesyrup.com/2025/04/04/nintendo-switch-2-pre-orders-us-tariffs-delay-canada/

Good. Honestly I don’t even want it, just Legends Z-A, which is coming for the OG Switch anyway.

I was ready to pay $399. But $449, maybe more? With $70-80 1st party games? Ehhh, I can wait. Get me an OG used one for at home only. Wife and kid have the Lite versions already. Yes, I know Nintendo charges way too much for their games and the price of the switch hasn't come down. I'm buying used

Preorders were not announced worldwide for April 9. In Australia, preorders were up just hours after the Switch 2 Direct

buy a couple and sell them to US for 500% tariffs.

I don’t have $800 Jfc

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Honestly, the tariffs are going to be a great excuse when the system doesn't launch as well as it should. Price of the system is fine, but that game price? BIG OOF! $80 for the digital version of arguably the only reason to get it at launch. Especially with the whole "you don't own digital stuff, you only own a license to it". In addition to code-in-a-box which is a waste of money for everyone,

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

they also have the follow-up where it has a game card with no game on it, but after downloading it you still need to have the card inserted. So it's $80 and up for Mario Kart, $70 for DK (which comes out for a month later), Zelda is Winter, No traditional/ Paper Mario games, no Luigi, no Animal Crossing, Pokemon is Winter.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

That is a ton of dumb after burning goodwill with the handling of the 3DS and Wii eshop closures, botching Animal Crossing card release, launching ACNH essentially unfinished ("it's a free update!" no, it really isn't, it's part of the game not in at launch that should've been) and then not making them finish it (thisiswhereidputit meme for sea creature commissions)

They should not release it in the US

1 year ago | Likes 459 Dislikes 3

They should release it, increase the price however much the tariffs demand, and itemize exactly where every extra cent Americans are paying comes from.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

We’re talking about Nintendo here… they’re going to make money everywhere they can. Honestly expect the price to go up 50% in the US now because fuck us

1 year ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I watched the Nintendo Direct when then announced the Launch date this June and about two hours after it ended there was signup on the US Nintendo page to reserve a spot for pre-orders that start May 5th. Pre-orders were never slated for April 9th and if they were it was never announced. Prices were 450 for the base system and 499 for the system with the new mario kart.

Think we'll get a discount here in Europe, because U.S. demand will be lower? Or am I looking for a silver lining that's not there?

1 year ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Probably not my guy
Here's hoping I'm wrong tho

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Really depends on a lot of factors. If the units are already assembled and US demand drops, it might be more profitable to sell to other markets at a low cost vs pay for storage. But with chaos goblin in office, he might repeal the tariffs at any time. This is why uncertainty is bad for the economy. Nintendo has to make a gamble and neither outcome is great.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A discount from a company that rarely ever holds sales on their platform.

1 year ago | Likes 0 Dislikes 2

I’ve heard some people share concerns that Nintendo (or any other foreign company) could offset the costs by increasing the costs everywhere else to offset the impact the cost on their largest market.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm trying to figure out how lower US demand would mean discounts for Europe and I can't see why you would think that would happen. If anything, if any kind of discount for Europe was ever planned by Nintendo, that will be gone to make up for lost revenue from the US market.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

That's not quite how it works. If supply exceeds demand, the price is too high. Increasing price will reduce demand further. They might break even in those markets on revenue with fewer sales at the higher price, but then they have to store inventory. Or they completely recalculate their production volume, which is very expensive and has upstream effects on their parts suppliers.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Except recent console launches have been following the pattern of launching with artificially low supply to inflate prices and demand anyway. Problems with the US market will obviously affect Nintendo, but I don't think it will be to the degree they have to discount Switch 2. At least, not at first.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

I wasn't going to buy it anyway. Shitty company with shitty practices. Don't support it. You can live without Nintendo games.

1 year ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 9

"The toy company charges money for goods and tries to stop thieves from stealing from them, therefore it is shitty" You nintendo haters never change. Always believing hating on the toy company makes you look cool and grown up. At least you guys were more honest about it in the past instead of making up pretentious excuses for your hate.

1 year ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 7

That's kinda funny. You nintendo corpo stans never change either. Maybe people wouldn't "steal" from them if they ever released old games that people want to play onto their platforms, instead of further removing what they drip feed. Many old games, Nintendo's especially, simply wouldn't exist today without people saving them for others to enjoy.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Uh.. chill out buddy. It's a company you don't have to lick the boot that hard. Don't support them if you don't want to. Support them if you do. If you're getting mad at people over a "toy company" as you say maybe you're the one overdoing it?

Glad to finally find a topic where we can vent about the ridic Switch 2 prices. That shit aint fire

1 year ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

I'm less concerned about the prices of video games (My parents were paying $100-$120 for my video games as a child (accounting for inflation). What I'm more concerned about is about how much we actually OWN our games on the Switch 2. Games being tied to our account, and the elimination of physical games is the scarier threat to gaming. I will not be supporting the release of this console.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Well said. Although for your inflation argument, wages have not kept up. This price will cut a lot of families out of the new console. One of the people who reported on the Switch 2 price would have to write 50 articles to afford it (I wrote for The Gamer for a while, they pay 10.00 an article).

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

And emulation is super important for preserving games, too. 3DS games are just gone, into the aether, unless you get them another way

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It will be like the recovery of Japanese phone games. Buying old and used Japanese cell phones in hopes it still has games on it. It's totally random. And then hacking it to remove the game files. I've noticed we install games onto our system memory now so better hope someone doesn't clear out their old console's hard drive to recover some old game in the future.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Tariffs or no tariffs, $450 for console and $90 physical games is rough. And 1st party Nintendo games rarely go on sale. I hate this timeline.

1 year ago | Likes 113 Dislikes 5

$60 in 1999 is $114 today; $60 in 2007 is $92 today, $60 in 2014 is $80 today, $60 in 2017 (switch release date) is $78 today, and $300 is $390 today. $350 (OLED price) in 2021 is $410 today. It sucks, sure, but I'm not surprised at all.

1 year ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 3

Switch 2 has a built in chat button. Chat will be free on launch, but will be a paid feature next year. So an entire button will be useless unless you pay for it. There is also a game that is meant to help you familiarize yourself with the system, but it will cost an extra $10.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

$60 video games were a blessing for a very long time and haven’t grown with inflation I’m 29 and I don’t remember a time when games didn’t cost $60 apparently doom 64 was $80 on release so before I was born they were even more expensive. The console price blows but honestly it’s about time for games to get pricer to just buy and than we can drop the bull shit pay to win models game companies basically were forced to switch to because we all demanded $60 inflation proof games.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’m fine with paying a $90 game from Nintendo because I know it’s gonna be worth $90, now if it was Ubisoft EA and notorious game companies I would be a little angrier.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's $630 Canadian. I won't be buying it, that's about double what I paid for the Switch 1.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Rom would not have missed.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There are no $90 physical games for Switch 2.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

The games are still physical, Nintendo just released a statement that digital download only game boxes now have an obvious standard for identifying them. Many third-party publishers in the past just purchased the cheapest 8GB cartridge and stuck a code on it, but I think Nintendo values the plug'n'play model too much to do it themselves.

But it's still horrifying seeing the price in AUS suddenly jump up like $30. I'm probably gonna be waiting on sales myself

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Honestly I'm going to pay whatever it costs for Zelda and really nothing else. I'm sure it'll be a few more years before the next major title comes out especially with the live action movie coming out March 26th 2027; unless they develop something side by side. Either way I'm gonna pay whatever it costs just like I always have for Zelda.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

This is technically true but there are $80 physical games. So like, not really a big enough difference to be pedantic about and think it changes the point they're trying to make

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

But wasn't it true there's still no physical games period? The cartridge you buy is basically a physical key to download the game. No or very minimal game data is actually on the physical cartridges

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Imagine buying a cart after the Switch 2 e-shop shuts down or they removed a game from store. Nintendo is terrible at supporting their stuff long term and I'm sure that's intentional. They don't want you hanging onto old stuff.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

....what do you consider 'long term'? The 3ds was launched in 2011, the 3ds eshop was literally just closed down in 2023. That's 12 years of support.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As far as I know, they've not done that with games for the first switch. But it is a thing they're doing with switch 2 games.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This isn't true. What happened is Nintendo released information showing what a box with only a download code is going to look like. Creating a standard obvious way to notify customers. I believe most of the games we are seeing don't have this message on the cover and, therefore, should be physical. We can expect publishers will not want to pay for larger cartridges and opt for download code cartridges instead, so take note of the attached image

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have no idea about that. I assumed the last physical game I bought for the switch 1 was an actual game on it. Like a Gameboy cartridge. I'm not knowledgeable to speak on it.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Many third party publishers did not want to pay for larger cartridges (Nintendo sold them as 8, 16, 32, and 64GB), so they slapped a download code onto the 8GB and called it a day.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There are some physical games, some key cards

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Games were $60 30 years ago. It's a miracle the prices didn't rise sooner.

1 year ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 5

What are you talking about. Pretty much every ps2 game I ever bought was $20.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 5

Buying from the bargain bin? Standard retail price for PS2 games started at $49.99. http://web.archive.org/web/20001211064500/http://www.gamestop.com/comingsoon.jsp?platform=PSX2

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Some games were also a good deal less than $60 and some were even more. It was crazy back then.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Its an unpopular opinion, but i agree. Video games are also a pretty cheap form of entertainment per hour compared to most other things. The higher pricetags probably mean im only buying games i know ill like, but i dont find it unfair

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Not really much of a miracle. The market size just grew so you benefit from economies of scale and your only overhead is your initial development costs, plus cost of your medium (CD, carts, etc) and shipping them per unit. Now they went digital and that lowers the cost per unit even more. Games regularly go on sale for dirt cheap, at least on steam. Sometimes even a few months after release. So if you're not a FOMO gamer you can play the latest releases without waiting a decade.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

No they fucking were not. I was born 30 years ago. I remember buying AAA titles for $40(or regional equivalent) up until 2016. We raised a huge stink about it when they jacked the prices then!

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 5

Games like Quake III, Unreal Tournament, Deus Ex, and Age of Empires II were $39.99 — all a far cry from AAA. Diablo 1, Diablo 2, Battlefield 2, and Call of Duty 4 were all $49.99 on PC at release (1997—2007). Call of Duty 4 was $59.99 on Consoles ; $29.99 on Nintendo DS. For context, when Diablo 1 released, "AAA" wasn't a thing.

So while some games were historically "$40" it was because, 1) the games industry was recovering from a crash ; 2) development was significantly smaller. ie. A vs AAA.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*cough* microtransactions *cough*

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

I mean yeah those suck, but games are also way more expensive to make, both due to development time and total staff needed. The average AAA release takes like 2 years longer to develop and can have a development team that's 5x larger (or more) than a AAA release from 30 years ago.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

The average AAA game is more fluff than substance. Or a copy-paste yearly release. Or releases full of bugs. Or is monitized to shit. The game industry has consistently shown that being AAA =/= a better game.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1
