Yeah, the GOP has been awful for my entire life, and I'm middle aged now. That said, post 2016 it's *somehow* managed to get significantly worse, and more blatant about it. Trump has been the culmination of it all, while also massively amplifying the worst things about the American right. He's a symptom and a catalyst.

I've got immense respect for how McCain conducted himself as a POW. But he'd already crashed a jet and wouldn't have even still been flying if his dad hadn't been an admiral. I also disagree with most of his politics. But I do love seeing how butthurt Trump is about him.

Not exactly true. #1 He crashed one jet during advanced flight training in Corpus Christi bay because he wasn't paying attention to his altitude. #2 Took out some power lines in Spain dicking around, but no crash. #3 Had an engine failure over Chesapeake Bay and ejected. Not his fault. #4 USS Forrestal disaster, nothing McCain could do about that. #5 Getting shot down over Vietnam. Now, if he wasn't the son of an admiral 1+2 would've ended his fighter pilot career.

I disagreed with his politics but I did respect him as a person. Probably the last round of republicans I didn’t think were batshit crazy. I’m from AZ and would have liked him out of office but I’d never wish a slow painful death on him like I would many of the GOP today and was disgusted by Trump’s disrespect.

Yeah. I didn’t like him as my representative. Weren’t enough of us voting to get him out. I could argue that plenty of Dems got us here too by not doing anything beyond weak little speeches and strongly worded letters. Doing nothing is just as damaging. The younger Dems and the Mamdani’s are giving me some hope we can turn this around. Term limits probably would have helped prevent this. Money out of politics definitely would have.

I’m 45. It does help a little to know it’s not something I could have avoided. My natural instinct is to always ask myself where I went wrong. I was raised by conservatives and it’s still in the back of my mind that things going bad like this are my fault somehow because “the system is amazing”. That fucking guilt. I learned a long time ago all of that is bullshit before I was even out of high school, but it still lingers sometimes. Wanting hope that if I just keep trying it will get better.
