It was extremely rare for shell shock to be an executable offense. It is only partially documented a handful of times.
SchrodingerMil
The game is based off World War I. But there are still many moments that drive home how terrible the conflict was. There's a chance 1/2
2/2 that when a character gets hurt, or killed, instead of yelling or crying out, they'll yell for their Mother. I die inside every time.
ImAShittyTransAm
Dude, check out Red Orchestra 2. Some of the dying cries go on for minutes at a time. It's not fun in an arcadey sense, but it is immersive.
Jasonmfbond
Homefront had a similar thing that bugged me. Someone gets shot during an engagement, someone helping shouts, "I don't know what to do!"
bootymen
Coyle be worse, they could be fighting in Stalingrad in WW2
derkderk2010
Call of Duty: Finest Hour. Far from the best WW2 game but definitely had the best representation of the battle in Stalingrad
I've played it too,but the brutality no where comes close to the actual battle
LapisScarab
...Okay? There's books and movies about WWI and I don't see people making comics complaining about those.
Raoul9753
If you still dont understand why movies and games are not the same, there is no use in explaining... especially hete with limited words
I don't think they're the same, other than they're both art forms. I.e. both are equally allowed to take a shot at history.

The same could be said for literally any fighting game ever. Some of the WWII games are pretty brutal as far as some of the atrocities.
HotelFourSix
As if WW2, Vietnam, the Cold War, and the War on Terror were all frolicking fun time parties.

Ironically the post calls Battlefield out on their "Look, this game is ww1 so it's cool and edgy" attitude

'died for literally no reason other than to win a conflict that would lead to WWII' Well that's just grossly insulting tbh.

It is amazing that an artist can draw a concerned helmet. I mean, you don't even see doom guy's face and still you know it

Serious Talk, if Doomguy was told to kill humans to save Mankind, he'd Rip and Tear without relent.
4doc
“They are rage, brutal, without mercy. But you. You will be worse. Rip and tear, until it is done.”
We also must remember that Doom Guy, in a way, has his own agenda. His only loyalty, in the big picture, might be to humanity as a whole.

It's only acceptable to make video games out of WWII or Vietnam. Because those were cake walks.
Applefaces
Yea, for the Vietnamese
TrundleTheGr8
The game has been enjoyable. It also has brought some attention to a conflict that is normally overshadowed by wwii. So fuck off
ProjectKurtz
This comic acts like WWI was especially bad, as if other wars aren't as brutal in different ways.
ASDFFDSAASDFASDF
it sorta was though iirc
dweadpiewitwobbits
The development of machine guns and chemical warfare made it especially bad. My gramps died from mustard gas. That said, all wars are bad.
All modern wars have something that killed people in horrible ways, from mustard gas to Agent Orange, to teddie bears wired with explosives.
Hell, even older wars had people dying in gruesome, painful ways from stuff like dysentery, infection, wild animals, winter, etc.
I think the thing is WW1 had all of that. It was brutal and terrible in so many ways, rather than lots of ways.
Getting bashed in the head by a neanderthal with a rock was pretty horrible too.
EMallorn
"This is not a peace. It is merely a 20-year armistice."
ArcaneConjecture
Revisionists trying to cover up Nazi racism push the new theory that WW1 and WW2 are the same. They were fought for very different reasons.
JackDoodle
They were fought for different reasons, but the outcome of the first directly lead to the rise of the cause of the second.

TheWombatStrikesAgain
Germanys biggest problem in the 1st half of the 20th century was basically that they couldn't figure out how to do their killing sprees (1)
...without getting caught on film. There was no video of Alabama in 1850.
without repercussions. The Brits murdered millions of third-worlders and made themselves look like victims, spreading civilization and (2)
defending themselves - when the Germans went to killing, they targeted europeans and talked about the Huns or the Master Race. So that's (3)
basically the difference: No grasp on social conventions and shitty PR department. (4)
Selerox
If France hadn't been after blood, we might have actually had peace. But no, they wanted Germany to pay, and we all suffered because of it.
patolucas1977
They lost almost a whole generation of males on that war just because Germany, I perfectly understand they were after blood
GoNavy09
Had the French not been planning to attack Germany it likely could have happened differently. France and Russia had been planning for
ages to squeeze out the Germans for the sake of imperium.
HauldrenCollider
i think it might be a bit unfair to blame the french for failing to see hitler coming
theholyinquisition
If they were after blood, why didn't they redivide germany into the states?
I mean, some areas are STILL uninhabitable, and will be for centuries to come.
H2O52
You can keep telling that it will stay false. It was Germany that was out for blood, in 1870, in 1914 and in 1939. All german's fault.
Essenemg
Because clearly this can be summarized as "it's because the french are cunts"..Remember that there was the Franco-Prussian war before that ?
And before that there was Napoleon, and before that... it's hard to find a definitive starting point.
That was the point of my comment, It's not like France and Germany didn't have an history of conflict, so saying it's just bloodlust...
VaultDweller
Calm down Frenchy. You guys are always pissed about somethin.
Wow Someone actually upvoted that brainless comment...
TheAngryEngineer
So did the English. Common phrase at the time was to squeeze the german lemon until the pips squeak. Fallacy to think the English were fair.
TheRealSirGregorCleganeTheMountain
Also fallacy to think the Germans were victims. All countries on both sides of WW1 were out for blood.
evasiveinaction
Actually, the English ameliorated the worst of the terms. Foch was angry because the agreement was too soft in his eyes.
British. Don't make it just the English you blame, especially when the Prime Minister was Welsh
Arconte1
The americans hadn't lost a generation of young men and seen their countries brought to financial ruin. Easy to be merciful when you havent.
Listentomeyoudumbfuck
Look at US response after WWII. Rebuilt Germany and Japan into successful economies rather than slapping them with huge reparations bills.
Oh bless
Not saying it was not a mistake but if the US lost 1 million men in ww1 they would probably push for a harder line aswell.
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/updates/many-americans-died-u-s-wars/ Not a million, but plenty to be pissed off about. 116k in WW1, 405k in WW2

So what about war reenactments? Is that just as bad? Should we forget history by banning anything that references the bad parts of history?
gaenaralhonk
We don't really have war reenactments in Germany. I wonder why...
Yeah, I know it is morbid thing in a sense....but a lot of people "drink the blood of Christ and eat of his flesh", so I guess it's okay
All parts of history are needed to make a whole. We are meant to look back and change our future....or not

Cadassia?
ButtersTheGreat13
WWII, Vietnam, and the War on Terror are cool though right?
NiceCatchBlancoNinoTooBadYourAssGotSacked
The War on Terror isn't really okay yet, most games just base it very loosely around the war and not the actual war itself.
Vietnam and the attacks on the middle east are not wars. Congress did not declare an act of war. They are unlawful military incursions.
Tomato, Tomahto. Two or more large armed groups shot at and blew each other up over the course of a decade. Sounds pretty warry to me.
Medal of Honor covered the War on Terror straight up. Fictional battles in it, but Taliban fighters.
The key there being fictional battles. Another game was canceled after an outcry because it was based around a real battle in Iraq.
A war from more than 100 years ago is bad. (2)
Yeah, but the point is, a war from only 5 years ago is getting more and more accepted in media.A war from 70 years ago is all over the media

Fucking right. This series was amazing, as was the one on the Mongols. Some days I can't decide who my favorite Carlin is, George or Dan.

Dan Carlin does a great job imparting how bad WW1 was and how no one knew what they were doing.

Why, i dont understand
To believe that WW1 had no effects other than to set the stage for WW2 is terrible history.
Well it didn't really achieve much but the wasteful slaughter of countless numbers of fighting-age men and just left Europe sour until WW2.
ToastedGiant
...aside from stopping a highly militaristic, war crime commiting and unpleasant Germany holding dominance over Europe.
Dude needs to get some of Dan Carlin's "Hardcore History" in his life. His podcast series "Blueprint to Armageddon" is fucking amazing.
ChrisHemsworthsBulge
Tbh I really can't stand Dorkly and their comics. Battlefield 1 is just a game, smdh.
And WW1 was just a horrific abuse and waste of human life for no good reason, so why salty? You play the game, other people criticise it.
Thekingofbeans
And people can criticize criticism for being stupid. Just like I'm criticizing yours for being stupid now.
FlyinHawaiian13
Because terrible things didn't happen in WW2, Vietnam, or any other war that games have adapted apparently
ecodude
And obviously it's not terrible in the modern games when the bad guy sets off a nuke or destroys half a continent...
dhaskjdhawyajhdbsdbgwakjhbdnmcckclkklkl
Its not like WWII, or literally any war ever, wasn't super fucked up, but I dont see them bitching about that.

I mean, NOBODY would want to play a game based on realistic horrors: like Papers Please, This War of Mine, or Valiant Hearts.

deltajesus
How is making a comic ruining your fun? The game's still there, it hasn't been changed by the comic's existence.
Well no shit. Just saying there are always people who are trying to stop things because for whatever reason they are personally offended.
Who's trying to stop anything here?
Just saying its people wasting their time pointlessly whining about something.

Ferne
I honestly don't see what is the problem with that.
Never said it was a problem. I enjoy the hell out of BF1.
nman10000
The first bit of the singleplayer campaign has you play as six separate characters... all of whom die and get little epitaphs save the last.
ThatGuyWhoThinksEveryoneIsAPineapple
I don't know what people were expecting. They want to make a fun game, they don't want to make a horrendous simulator.
Lichelf
The problem is that BF have been the same since 2011 with only minor changes.
Even the last few CoD games innovated more per game than BF have done in 5 years
Magicfancypants
What? Have you played cod games from an other reality or something? Would love to finally play an innovative cod game after the first MW
2/2 roots. I mean, CoD still plays great but it's just "generic futuristic shooty game" now.
Yeah, okay, but what CoD is doing isn't good change. People don't want an EVEN MORE futuristic shooter, they want CoD to go back to it's 1/2

also I feel someone should point out that no wars are nice wars. They all sucked. The question on whether we should create media that 1/2
revolves around such serious conflict is a much larger one than can be covered in a 6 panel webcomic. Personally I find that war and 1.5/2
conflict are incubators for compelling stories. Action, Drama, Heroism, Villainy, Suffering, Escapism - what more do you want? I feel 1.75/2
battlefield captured a range of perspectives on war, from the very serious opening mission, to the romping adventure with picaresque 1.875/2
pilots, to advanced duck-hunt sitting on a ridge as a sniper in multiplayer. 2/2
inboxmefoxes
No wars are nice wars, but it's hard to argue that WW1 was anything less than exceptionally horrific, even compared to WW2 and genocides.
There were some pretty horrific scenes, I'll grant you that. In fact, I carry a commemorative coin from the Somme around everywhere I go 1/2
because going there and learning about the pointless slaughter and miserable conditions bothered me SO much, and has stuck with me 1.5/2
for 8 years at least, and will stick with me for many more. But there were plenty of points throughout history where conditions were 1.75/2
PTKrieg
RE: PTSD, the term didn't exist, but 'shell shock' was a recognized issue. Treatment was temporary removal from the front line for rest. 1/

Ironically the post calls Battlefield out on their "Look, this game is ww1 so it's cool and edgy" attitude
HITG
'died for literally no reason other than to win a conflict that would lead to WWII' Well that's just grossly insulting tbh.

It is amazing that an artist can draw a concerned helmet. I mean, you don't even see doom guy's face and still you know it
batmanmf
Eyebrows, our big tell.
TGWeaver
We already shorthand the visor as eyes. Arch the top of the visor and you present concerned, knitted brows.

I think Doom is a pretty cool guy. Eh fights deomns and doesn't afraid of anything.

Cry a river over a video game. Geez, do you need a safe place too?
GadenKerensky

ProjectKurtz
All modern wars have something that killed people in horrible ways, from mustard gas to Agent Orange, to teddie bears wired with explosives.
ProjectKurtz
Hell, even older wars had people dying in gruesome, painful ways from stuff like dysentery, infection, wild animals, winter, etc.
ImAShittyTransAm
I think the thing is WW1 had all of that. It was brutal and terrible in so many ways, rather than lots of ways.
dweadpiewitwobbits
Getting bashed in the head by a neanderthal with a rock was pretty horrible too.
EMallorn
"This is not a peace. It is merely a 20-year armistice."
ArcaneConjecture
Revisionists trying to cover up Nazi racism push the new theory that WW1 and WW2 are the same. They were fought for very different reasons.
JackDoodle
They were fought for different reasons, but the outcome of the first directly lead to the rise of the cause of the second.

"A bunch of armed strangers on a train waiting for a tunnel so they could get off the first shot" -Bismark (paraphrased)
TheWombatStrikesAgain
Germanys biggest problem in the 1st half of the 20th century was basically that they couldn't figure out how to do their killing sprees (1)
ArcaneConjecture
...without getting caught on film. There was no video of Alabama in 1850.
TheWombatStrikesAgain
without repercussions. The Brits murdered millions of third-worlders and made themselves look like victims, spreading civilization and (2)
TheWombatStrikesAgain
defending themselves - when the Germans went to killing, they targeted europeans and talked about the Huns or the Master Race. So that's (3)
TheWombatStrikesAgain
basically the difference: No grasp on social conventions and shitty PR department. (4)
France and Russia had been planning for
GoNavy09
ages to squeeze out the Germans for the sake of imperium.
HauldrenCollider
i think it might be a bit unfair to blame the french for failing to see hitler coming
theholyinquisition
If they were after blood, why didn't they redivide germany into the states?
ImAShittyTransAm
I mean, some areas are STILL uninhabitable, and will be for centuries to come.
H2O52
You can keep telling that it will stay false. It was Germany that was out for blood, in 1870, in 1914 and in 1939. All german's fault.
Essenemg
Because clearly this can be summarized as "it's because the french are cunts"..Remember that there was the Franco-Prussian war before that ?
TheWombatStrikesAgain
And before that there was Napoleon, and before that... it's hard to find a definitive starting point.
Essenemg
That was the point of my comment, It's not like France and Germany didn't have an history of conflict, so saying it's just bloodlust...
VaultDweller
Calm down Frenchy. You guys are always pissed about somethin.
Essenemg
Wow Someone actually upvoted that brainless comment...
TheAngryEngineer
So did the English. Common phrase at the time was to squeeze the german lemon until the pips squeak. Fallacy to think the English were fair.
TheRealSirGregorCleganeTheMountain
Also fallacy to think the Germans were victims. All countries on both sides of WW1 were out for blood.
evasiveinaction
Actually, the English ameliorated the worst of the terms. Foch was angry because the agreement was too soft in his eyes.
Applefaces
Applefaces
Oh bless
Arconte1
Not saying it was not a mistake but if the US lost 1 million men in ww1 they would probably push for a harder line aswell.
Listentomeyoudumbfuck
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/updates/many-americans-died-u-s-wars/ Not a million, but plenty to be pissed off about. 116k in WW1, 405k in WW2

To be fair most of the countries we built up was purely to stop the Communists.
firefighter26
That was pretty much the global issue after WW2 according to the west, so it made sense.

True. Idk about "purely," but yeah that was a major reason.

gaenaralhonk
We don't really have war reenactments in Germany. I wonder why...
FngrsRpicks2
Yeah, I know it is morbid thing in a sense....but a lot of people "drink the blood of Christ and eat of his flesh", so I guess it's okay

ButtersTheGreat13
WWII, Vietnam, and the War on Terror are cool though right?
NiceCatchBlancoNinoTooBadYourAssGotSacked
The War on Terror isn't really okay yet, most games just base it very loosely around the war and not the actual war itself.
EMallorn
Vietnam and the attacks on the middle east are not wars. Congress did not declare an act of war. They are unlawful military incursions.
NiceCatchBlancoNinoTooBadYourAssGotSacked
Tomato, Tomahto. Two or more large armed groups shot at and blew each other up over the course of a decade. Sounds pretty warry to me.
ButtersTheGreat13
Medal of Honor covered the War on Terror straight up. Fictional battles in it, but Taliban fighters.
NiceCatchBlancoNinoTooBadYourAssGotSacked
The key there being fictional battles. Another game was canceled after an outcry because it was based around a real battle in Iraq.
ButtersTheGreat13
A war from more than 100 years ago is bad. (2)
ButtersTheGreat13
Yeah, but the point is, a war from only 5 years ago is getting more and more accepted in media.A war from 70 years ago is all over the media

Fucking right. This series was amazing, as was the one on the Mongols. Some days I can't decide who my favorite Carlin is, George or Dan.

Dan Carlin does a great job imparting how bad WW1 was and how no one knew what they were doing.

evasiveinaction
To believe that WW1 had no effects other than to set the stage for WW2 is terrible history.
DiceyBusiness
Well it didn't really achieve much but the wasteful slaughter of countless numbers of fighting-age men and just left Europe sour until WW2.
ToastedGiant
...aside from stopping a highly militaristic, war crime commiting and unpleasant Germany holding dominance over Europe.
TheJudgeHasItBackwards
Dude needs to get some of Dan Carlin's "Hardcore History" in his life. His podcast series "Blueprint to Armageddon" is fucking amazing.
ChrisHemsworthsBulge
Tbh I really can't stand Dorkly and their comics. Battlefield 1 is just a game, smdh.
DiceyBusiness

You can argue this with any game with guns or death. If you don't enjoy these games, shut up and don't play them. Stop ruining our fun.
deltajesus
How is making a comic ruining your fun? The game's still there, it hasn't been changed by the comic's existence.
frankprilljr
Well no shit. Just saying there are always people who are trying to stop things because for whatever reason they are personally offended.

Or other theaters. The Eastern Front had all kinds of mobility going on, with losses that wouldn't be beaten until WWII's Eastern Front.

I honestly don't see what is the problem with that.
muisverriet
Never said it was a problem. I enjoy the hell out of BF1.
nman10000
The first bit of the singleplayer campaign has you play as six separate characters... all of whom die and get little epitaphs save the last.
ThatGuyWhoThinksEveryoneIsAPineapple
I don't know what people were expecting. They want to make a fun game, they don't want to make a horrendous simulator.
Lichelf
The problem is that BF have been the same since 2011 with only minor changes.
Lichelf
Even the last few CoD games innovated more per game than BF have done in 5 years
Magicfancypants
What? Have you played cod games from an other reality or something? Would love to finally play an innovative cod game after the first MW
muisverriet
2/2 roots. I mean, CoD still plays great but it's just "generic futuristic shooty game" now.
muisverriet
Yeah, okay, but what CoD is doing isn't good change. People don't want an EVEN MORE futuristic shooter, they want CoD to go back to it's 1/2

Valiant hearts made me super sad throughout the entire game

also I feel someone should point out that no wars are nice wars. They all sucked. The question on whether we should create media that 1/2
DickDastardly404
revolves around such serious conflict is a much larger one than can be covered in a 6 panel webcomic. Personally I find that war and 1.5/2
DickDastardly404
conflict are incubators for compelling stories. Action, Drama, Heroism, Villainy, Suffering, Escapism - what more do you want? I feel 1.75/2
DickDastardly404
battlefield captured a range of perspectives on war, from the very serious opening mission, to the romping adventure with picaresque 1.875/2
DickDastardly404
pilots, to advanced duck-hunt sitting on a ridge as a sniper in multiplayer. 2/2
inboxmefoxes
No wars are nice wars, but it's hard to argue that WW1 was anything less than exceptionally horrific, even compared to WW2 and genocides.
DickDastardly404
There were some pretty horrific scenes, I'll grant you that. In fact, I carry a commemorative coin from the Somme around everywhere I go 1/2
DickDastardly404
because going there and learning about the pointless slaughter and miserable conditions bothered me SO much, and has stuck with me 1.5/2
DickDastardly404
for 8 years at least, and will stick with me for many more. But there were plenty of points throughout history where conditions were 1.75/2
