This particular knot has four names that I know of it's a globally used knot and language isn't global. Square, reef, water, and flat knot.

World Scouting Movement use this knot in their emblem, and they call it a reef knot. I reckon that's as global as you're gonna get.

Square knot is extremely versatile. Holds better and unties easier than the double overhand knot. Just reverse the ends on the second turn.

It's simple, easy to tie, and comes untied easily. But double fisherman is not much harder and far more reliable.

I use it a lot when Im gardening. Tying up climbing roses, irrigation, sapling, unimportant stuff that needs a knot.

It works well for tying 550 together when stringing up tarps and shelters. Anytime the lines are equal diameter +1 for calling it a reef kn.

Try the ashley bend. Just as simple to tie, much more secure, works on mismatched line sizes, and it doesn't sieze.

"Reef knot"-- it's exact purpose. Sails were tied in shallow water so they could be pulled and the capsized knot hit off with a hammer. 1

which is is a very fast way to get your sails if surprised by sudden, deadly, reefs. If you need a safer joining knot try the Ashely Bend

If this knot is so risky & problematic, why do you use it a lot? Does it do something useful other knots wont?

It is risky sometimes. Using it is great if you want to be able to remove it quick and easy. But not if lives depend on it holding together.

This is just a reef knot in Australia defence it’s literally on the able seaman’s rank insignia and is taught as a survival knot
