And here they are. My other half has talked about getting backyard chickens for years, and we finally decided to pull the trigger. We have all the supplies and everything built for them, and the wife is thrilled.

These four ladies are a cross between a Cochin rooster and a Barred Rock hen. They have an interesting silver coloration that I haven't seen on a chicken before. I hope they are able to keep the wife entertained, keep bugs out of the yard, and maybe give us a few eggs for several more years.

Well played, OP. They're adorable.

Do be careful. The avian flu has been really bad lately.

She was *so happy* when she came home and saw them all the first time. She sat right by them and talked to them for a half hour.

Look out for raccoons. Mfs are ruthless if they can get at your chickens.

Our rat population has increased significantly since so many people started keeping backyard chickens. :-/

We're hoping for a few eggs, and for them to help keep bugs in the yard down. Chickens like to eat ticks.

My mom had bantams mixed with barred rock. cool looking birds

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just a matter of time til you have 300 now. After that you'll try ducks...then turkeys. Sauce: me

You're probably correct. Sauce: There's 5 of them now.

Chickens are the best. My chicks just had chicks of their own :)

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Look at them red feathers. I'm enjoying all the colors that chickens seem to come in.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They are majestic creatures. I'm interested in seeing what colors these chicks inherit from their father.

They're great. I've always wanted some, but we have a lot of foxes, plus some large birds of prey near me.

3 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Foxes and raptors gotta eat too.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was going to mention this. You definitely need to protect against birds of prey, even if you’re in the city.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The plan for these ladies is to put them in a thing called a "chicken tractor", which is a sort of small mobile enclosure with a coop >

3 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just be aware @OP there can be a high fatality rate with chicks. Sometimes you'll lose none, others many can randomly die. Good luck.

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

That much I knew, my parents always had trouble keeping chickens but at least part of that was due to neglect. :-( You have to do more than>

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

< just put food and water out for them.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They NEED to be really warm. like REALLY warm. if they’re huddling, they’re too cold, no matter how warm you think they should be

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You should have better odds since you are getting them right from the breeder. I advise against ever getting mail order ones. Very ->

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

high death rate for them. Mostly because they can go for days with no food or water in the mail system.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

? I’ve gotten 40ish chicks mailed from a hatchery, only lost a few. They’re mailed day of hatch and can survive 72h np without food&water.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My wife and I originally went to an Atwoods (farm supply store) and the only chicks they had that weren't half dead were 100% dead. >

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

YOOO freshly stocked eggs no more needing to go to the market for it. I have a dream one day to do this and have goats, bees, and pigs

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nothing to big or fancy I wish to have 1 cow for the milk but the goats will do, and bees for honey and mead.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I used to have bees, and I'd like to have some again. They're awesome, and you can even tame them.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Tame. Bees. Excuse me what? some Jupiter ascension right there

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No, it's actually easy. So assuming you've got a hive that's getting mean, or you've caught a wild hive, you can get them in a frame box >

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

< and find the queen and kill her. Then order a queen in the mail, she will come with a little enclosure that the other bees can get her >

I used to go out every Friday and Saturday night picking up drunk women from bars and taking them home, my wife knew. I was an Uber driver.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I did that for a while in 2017, it was more fun than I thought it would be.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I thought so too, but thought I should have been making more money doing it than I did. I felt Uber was greedy and don't miss that part

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yup I definitely stopped because even with a really efficient car I was just wasting money driving. It's even worse now.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I drove once last year because they offered a bonus of $200 for doing 5 rides. I drove for a few hours and made $266 & haven't driven since

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yup, those bonuses and quests vanish pretty fast, if you drive for 5 days straight they typically go away.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In my experience, be mentally prepared for at least one of your hens to be a rooster. Don't get too attached - until they start layin'.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I meant to say also, they're adorable.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Here's a pic from this morning. The new additions don't look a whole lot different.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

With the price of eggs these days...

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I'm less concerned with the price of eggs than I am worried there just won't be any at some point. But this project has shown me that >

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

< a LOT of people are having the same idea, so I'm going to be giving away any extra eggs to help crash the price of store-bought eggs.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They won't be laying for quite a while though, they're really young. But yeah by the time they turn 1, times 4, you'll be drowning in eggs

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Shouldn't last too much longer, as the farms should be recovering from the bird flu eventually. Sadly, there are months of lead time to ->

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

to replace a laying hen with a new chick. And this round of flu took out a lot of birds.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But once the farms recover, will the price drop, or will they keep gouging like many other industries are doing?

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We will have to wait and see. Though, eggs have always been like milk and are loss-leaders. So stores undercut their price so people ->
