My wife and I talk about this all the time. We’re in our early 70’s and retired physicians so we know a thing or two because we’ve seen a thing or two. We go to sleep holding hands. If it was just me, I’d be devastated but I’d push on so as not to disappoint my kids.
This is so lovely. <3 My husband and I are 45; married since 2004. Still very much enamored with each other and have had similar conversations. We don't sleep holding hands, but usually one of us is touching the other in some manner (foot on the other's leg, hand on a shoulder). I don't know how I'd get to sleep without him.
Thats the fucked part. Its when the anomalies in our society get control and try and convince us caring about eachother is wrong. They infect the rest of us with the "I got mine." mentality.
This my mantra too. I feel more valuable as a person to know I'm held in regard by some people whether my grandkids, my neighbors, the boy up the street who greets me whenever I go by, my pharmacist, et al. And I try to provide the same for them and others.
Ask a friend for a hug, even same sex. I good hug has nothing to do with sex, and everything to do with sharing with another. Initiate hugs., They are contagious!
When my mom passed, my niece gave me a hug. It was meant to console me for losing my mom. Instead tears flowing over losing my mom, they were flowing because it was the first hug since 6 or 7 years. Sorry mom.
My mom died 5 years ago and as a direct and immediate consequence I lost the rest of immediate family. Most to the cult unfortunately. In the span of a month I went from a family to no one in the world that I'm close to. I'm so desperate to have a meaningful long relationship again that anyone get close pulls away from me trying to hard. I want so desperately for someone to fight for that I have no one who would fight for me. Just outside looking through the window at those around me.
Work on yourself first friend. Work out, read books (not just the easy kind, but the classics), read philosophy and poetry. Find who you are and become enough in yourself. Go and find ways to do good for others, practising to expect nothing in return. Meaningful relationships will follow once you've stopped looking for them. Perhaps, "man's search for meaning" by viktor frankl, or "the soul of man" by oscar wilde will start you off. Good luck!

Wow. I can’t imagine ever being lucky enough to get married to someone I like, let alone being together until 82

Man, hug you. You should get fucking hugged.

I regularly ask for and give out hugs in Portland, OR. I know it's hard, but sometimes letting your friends know you need a hug can help. 🫂

Does a 5 second hug at a funeral count? If not, I have no memory of the last real hug I got.
