I hope that 'we' can learn from what US has become under unfettered capitalism. I see signs of pushing back against 'corporate profits at all cost' more in the EU and other areas. In the English speaking world our cultures are under attack from the massive US media output, especially social media.

Honestly, I feel like if we did celebrate what we are doing right maybe we'd get more good stuff done. Like:
The national weather service is doing amazing prioritizing public safety by providing accurate and timely weather forecasts and warnings to everyone, completely free of charge,
unlike private corporations who often use the NWS data to generate profit-driven products, sometimes prioritizing features and aesthetics over critical information for life-saving decisions!

I think celebrating how good programs like this are (for now) might make them harder to cancel, I feel like right now barely anyone acknowledges their existence, or thinks that it is the private companies doing the good work instead of just piggybacking off it.
Can you think of anything we should celebrate/give attention to before they try to take it away?

I agree with you. Messaging/PSAs about great programs of citizen benefit that many people don't know are possible, those that already exist, would help defend such systems/policies. My understanding is that this is the desired result of why Civics classes were removed and replaced with "historical social studies".

I was reading some Golden Age comics the other day and one thing that struck me is how strongly they leaned into fostering civic pride and duty. Ads for Daisy air rifles that advocated responsible, supervised use, short stories designed to teach educational lessons or provoke thought, and of course PSAs like the classic Superman All-American one. I don't think anyone would be open to a pro-civic responsibility campaign in today's USA though.

I used to do 12 to a warehouse and back five days a week. Kind of sucks at first, but after a while it's a refreshing way to start the day.

I'm the opposite, my commute's 5 miles and it's starting to wear on me. The first year was fine, second summer was okay, but I'm gonna move closer to the lab in spring because I feel myself having to really mentally brace for the journey to make myself leave the house.

It's not the distance, it's the gradients that'll kill you. Anyone cound cycle all day long on a flat road, easily cover 100miles of more a day.
It's why electric assist bikes are such a good idea - they take the hard work out of hills but still let you get the benefits of riding distance.

One of my mates used to cycle to work from sydney to st marys (about 50km) every morning. He was just doing it to get fit and eventually cycled from canada to mexico.

Probably 1.5hr. Not a heap longer than a lot of commutes and you don't need to go to the gym. I choose to make my 25min cycle commute 45min on the way home because there's virtually no cars on that route.

Yeah. 10mph is very achievable for a fairly unfit person, and you will quickly get a lot fitter if you ride that far every day!
