This one is tricky because sometimes YT recommendations are based on what other people on your IP search, so if you have a fucking weird ass roommate or little brother you might be fucked on that test.
Heh wouldn't work on my phone. I dint log into youtube and my browser clears history when I go to quit. It's not even trying to hide something things. I have just noticed that websites trying to be helpful are sometimes extra u helpful remembering what you looked at. Shopping websites in particular.
Mine is basically just Ashens, Slow Mo Guys, various cooking videos like Jun's Kitchen, various clay/resin diorama build, video game things like Jerma, Wayneradiotv, and RTGame, music, and disaster videos like caving accidents and building collapsed.
I think it's because I see some stupid shitfox news said, and it's like a train wreck that forces me to share down the stupidity and yt is like, wow this guy must love this.
I remember that almost immediately after the disaster there was a joke going around that schoolteacher/astronaut Christa McAuliffe’s last words were “What does this button do?”
That was certainly the case in my elementary school. We watched it happen with our own eyeballs, and by lunchtime other kids were asking how many astronauts could fit in a VW beetle or what kind of shampoo Christa McAuliffe used.
I get recommended Far right wing content regularly. I am very much left wing. But I watch political stuff.. maybe thats why. So maybe i watch a left wing video on andrew tate, and then i get like five videos either about him or by him, some right wing some not. Happens all the time for me.
As I remember it, there was a movie produced before 9/11 but broadcast after it, and it (or part of it) showed the world without Kermit, and there was a shot of the WTC. From this, people inferred that:
World with Kermit = 9/11 happens World without Kermit = 9/11 doesn't happen
To be fair, YT recommendations can be utter garbage at times. Like I watched on video about what the last season of Game of Throne should have done better, and for the next two weeks I've hand anti-woke stuff with usually less than 100 views per video in my recommendations, until I consequently set "don't recommend channel" to subjectively a hundred of those brainrot channels.
I stopped using the website for my usual viewing and instead switched to the freetube desktop app since I like the UI better (and i can see new videos from my subscriptions easier/ more reliably)
But I still use the website for music... As a result, my homepage is filled with big tittied anime girls with a few tech videos scattered here and there...
I hope it was a fucking big red flag for *him*. "Hello, we just met at this party and I want to review your personal digital data before I proceed talking to you."
I'm all for women having more tools to weed out bad hombres, but it doesn't speak highly of her if she wants to see recommendations instead of your watch history.
Maybe, but I'm not sure the two are linked. There's a big step between "hey, can I see what this stupid algorithm feeds you to see if there's literal nazi stuff in there?" and "I'm going to read your actual texts". There's certainly a venn diagram overlap between the two, but I don't feel it's a circle.
It's different to use it as a conversation starter and see if you have similar interests (kinda) vs "Show me your red flags now". If you watch a nazi propaganda video one time cause your curious and more shows up in the rec does that make you a nazi? That algorithm will rec me videos I've already seen and videos I currently have tabbed even after like 20 refreshes, sometimes shows me things I've never looked up before because it's suddenly "popular" just saying it's not a reliable source.
I don't know - the more I think about it, the more reasonable it seems. If their YT is all conspiracy theory videos and incel bullshit and gun porn, that's a hard pass.
conspiracy theory videos would be interesting to watch for a variety of reasons not just because you believe it, not sure what you mean by incel bullshit, and you can think guns are cool without supporting murder just saying. Those late night rabbit holes on youtube really get ya plus 99% of my recommendations are ass, it'll even rec a video I currently have tabbed or I'll see the same video every refresh over and over again. All because it's there doesn't mean I'll watch it.
Think it's more in line with let me see your music than it is texts. Buuuut if they get real weird and controlling about it instead of it being playful/appreciative then yes, red flag
In the post they clearly state it's to check for red flags, if they were dating it would be texts instead. Snoopers will snoop regardless of the context.
I have watch history turned off (I don't like google keeping a historical record of anything I do, even though 99% of what I do is look at videos about my hobbies) so I don't get any recommendations. I wonder if having no recommendations is a red flag?
I don't know what you mean. When I go to youtube, there is absolutely nothing on the main page other than a message "Your Watch History is Off". To see any video in youtube, I must search for it. If I don't search, I can't see any videos since absolutely nothing appears other than the message.
They're big on the "hey remember that thing you like? Eh? Eh?" method of finding things to recommend. Which I'm fine with because now I'm watching a playlist of all the OX cocktail videos.
Whenever I watched even one WoW lore video to see what was happening the story after I quit, my dashboard would be alt-right content for like two weeks.
I just get more wow lore videos. Well, currently I'm getting fire mage pvp clips, and I'm tempted to turn one of my mage alts into a PvP character for funzies.
I was bored and watched "funny videos, cringe, instant karma" kind of videos. It evolved to women hating videos like "watch this feminist get owned" or "woman instant karma" and evolved from there to videos from Ben Shapiro and Jordan Peterson.
I started to feel a bit more angry and I realized what happen and started to block ever angry video from YouTube to teach it to stop recommending that kind of videos.
I saw a clip of Rogan and he had a real palaeontologist on the show talking about g about how we know what we know, it was genuinely interesting so I watched a bunch of it. I still have weird alt history shit popping up in my feed now.
when wow's popularity waned, a lot of people who'd build their channels around it either had to diversify or die off. most of them went into movie and comic critiquing... and that's a fucking black hole when it comes to surrounding yourself with angry basement dwellers all shouting the same thing
Wows popularity has started to build again, but they've had near a decade of giving their unsolicited opinions on everything but... dont use the people you did a decade ago, its all tainted rubbish now
If I see a video i suspect of being nazi shit, I open the video in a NEW tab, and then check the channel looking at old vids. If it is far right wing i go to the first tab click the three dots and filter out the channel.
I had to start down voting all gun related YT videos. I enjoy shooting, especially the WR ones. But it always leads to some dipshit taking guns too far. Or just outright dumbass right wing shit.
I occasionally watch those, and more than occasionally the trailer for TWW, and never get that content. Have you told youtube you don't want to see that shit?
The YT algorithm isn't consistent, or at least doesn't work how you'd expect. It can still recommend things similar to what you mark as "not interested" and can stop showing you things you're actually subscribed to. It exists for their profit, not for your pleasure.
Problem is, you can block, say, Fox News' channel, but eventually the algorithm will start recommending videos that repost the original channel's content. Or sometimes, it'll even try to sneak in some videos from the channel you blocked, like the algo is just making sure you really meant it, or maybe trying to see if you changed your mind.
idk about other regions, but US servers have always been filled with the sorts of people that are alt-right or highly susceptible to becoming alt-right. Not to say you can't find people who aren't like that (eg "Pridemoore"), but those people were a significant part of the community the entire time I played.
Other than trade chat or barrens chat I didn't really ever see anything about politics unless it was a hot take from a troll trying to get reactions. Although I will say out of all the servers I've played on, Moon Guard has been a good time. The players create a social environment around the cities that give the game life. Just try not to get too close to Goldshire or you might catch something.
I guess also, to be clear, the alt-right content I used to get on my dash after viewing WoW videos was very much the gateway stuff that had a lot of crossover appeal between neckbeard gamers, neckbeard atheists, neckbeard neckbeards, etc. I just recognized it for what it was because I've wasted way too much time in my life arguing with the alt-right online.
Well, my guild is LGBTQ+ and neurospicy friendly, most of our players are some sort of leftists. We have one Trump fan though, which is weird here in Europe. Our environment is also friendly for women. There's lots of guilds with similar values, but there's also toxic boy's clubs. Sometimes someone does say something really fucking stupid, and I'll try to slap some sense into them by explaining things they clearly don't understand.
Its been a problem for a while, unfortunately. Granted, not *everyone* is going to see it, but with all the information they collect on users, they probably have some idea where it is better to focus attempts. -_-
Then they should know to stop suggesting it to me. Every couple of months I have to remind YouTube not to recommend Fox News, OAN, Breitbart, or anything that glorifies far-right views.
Like, "Okay, it's been a month or two. Are you interested in this stuff NOW? Okay... How about NOW?"
Part of the reason I gave up on Classic was how extremely toxic the players were. Regular WoW seemed like rock bottom till the Classic players brought out the shovels and got to digging.
