Yes, you can pet them. Once.

In Maine, not Alaska, but yeah. Fairly often when I was growing up. Those things are massive.

"If you ever see a deer and are like 'That's a big deer' it's an elk, if you ever see a deer and are like 'Holy fuck that's a dinosaur from a byegone age' that's a moose" -Brennan "Capitalism is the TRUE BBEG" Lee Mulligan (approx.)

Interesting addition to that, the Sika "Deer" of Nara Japan that interact with tourists are actually related to elk and in some instances are considered small elk.

We went white water rafting on the Salmon river in Idaho after my brother's GF won a lottery. We had a moose visit our site one night at dinner time. Luckily he was blocked by a downed tree across his chest. Your comprehension of the world gets shuffled a bit taking in such a sight.

I was Hiking in Isle Royal National Park when one popped out like that raptor in jurrasic park (think clever girl). If you think it looks big in this video you are only getting a taste. I have never been more scared in my life. It made no sound and then it was just next to me. I just stood and hoped and prayed, thankfuly it just kept wandering on, not even sparing me a glance; I felt the not worth my time and energy posture radiating from him.

That's a huge swamp donkey

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I could've touched his nose before he realized I was not a cow in rut.

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well that looks like the Glenn Hwy just past Eureka Valley.

Swamp donkey FTW +1

I've seen them in the wild many times, but only once up close..it was at dusk and he come out of a bog...steam rising from him...looked spectatular until he spotted us. We climbed a big spruce tree to about 30 feet and were stuck there for over 40 mins...he would leave then come back snapping branches 3inches around. He was in the rut and came across us while chasing the cow.

7 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I've seen them up close, appearing out of the ditch or roadside brush in seconds while I'm traveling highway speed and with only a second to react to avoid hitting them. If you're lucky it happened in daylight.

I've had at least three close calls at night where I have absolutely no idea how I didn't end up with a moose in my lap. I swear one must have raised his head at the last minute and I drove under it.

Today I saw sam Winchester crossing the road

7 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Sam was more of a yak, with the floppy hair and all.

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But Sam's nickname was Moose, remember?

Yeah, but as a rebuttal, please see the following: https://unsplash.com/photos/a-yak-with-long-hair-laying-in-a-field-YkCUymSg6aQ

That majestic animal can receive satellite television

7 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It isn’t until he’s fully on the road that you get a sense for how truly massive these bad boys are. They can, will, and often WANT to mess you up.

A good policy is to give a wide berth to any animal that outweighs you by at least double. Even a whitetail deer can ruin your day if it feels threatened enough.

7 months ago | Likes 117 Dislikes 0

I saw one on the side of the road, so I sped up in case it stepped into the road, wouldn't have mattered, my car was so low, I could have drove right underneath it!!

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What often happens is a car takes out the legs, and the body smashes directly into the driver/passenger compartment and immediately kills anyone inside

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My personal policy is thus: unless im trying to eat it, i admire wild animals from afar. Ive had accidentall close encounters with elk, they're frightening enough.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dude I know was biking up here in the Northland. Car hit a deer, it recocheted rekocheted requochade, ummm bounced off the car hit the dude and he almost died. He was really messed up. Now I'm going to go look up how to spell recouchet.

But if I can't get close enough to see the details of their eyeballs in my selfie, what am I supposed to post to social media for my *millions of followers?

*Millions = my mom and her four friends

Post _if_ someone can recover the phone from the wreckage.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dawg give *any* wild animal a wide berth.
People get this idea that "oh it's just a heron they're so pretty i'll walk past it" or "oh it's just a squirrel whats the big deal"

Herons have a sword on their face. Squirrels are impossible to grab, and will cut and tear anything they can find.
Just leave animals alone, and give them their space.

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Didn't get me started about skunks

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's also important to note its height. If you hit it with a car, 90% of its body mass is above the hood. It's going through the windshield and turning you into a fine paste. There is no safe way to collide with it.

7 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If your car is low enough and you're going fast enough it might miss the windshield... I wouldn't like to test this hypothesis.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’ll bet a main battle tank would do ok.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fun fact: because of laws against deploying the military on domestic soil in both the US and Canada, all military vehicles are transported by flatbed. Even vehicles that are specifically designed to be driven on roads, such as humvees, are transported by truck because they cannot be legally driven on domestic roads off designated military bases.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

um, no. they convoy around plenty in Humvees and HEMMTs, etc. if it won't cause issues for civilian travel.

however, since convoys are large and slow and likely to cause traffic issues, it's discouraged. Much faster to put them on flatbeds. https://www.ustranscom.mil/dtr/part-iii/dtr_part_iii_app_f.pdf

Dag, yo. Thanks for the excellently sourced correction.

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

damn that's a huge animal. moose looks a little tired, didn't have his morning juice

7 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Well I mean he's carrying that giant rack probably I'm very laid the last few days

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just don't give him goose juice!
Moose juice, not goose juice, is juice for a moose.
Goose juice, not moose juice, is juice for a goose.

That thing will murder you in .25 seconds if you get in its way.

7 months ago | Likes 289 Dislikes 3

Don’t threaten me with a good time!

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It will kick you just for fun.

7 months ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

Not for fun. They are just blind and easily spooked. I used to see them a lot. They teach you in driver's ed not to try to honk at them, chase them, or scare them off the road. Just chill out and wait for them to leave.

7 months ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Could kill you, bmostly wants to eat trees.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Should I take it personally or does it apply to everyone?

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So dont make fun his inability to wear hats. Got it

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And probably won't even notice you as it does

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We ran in to one in Nederland on a river trail.

7 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

They are huge and appear to be "lumbering," but when adrenaline kicks in, they run far faster than any human. Those antlers are worse than a Klingon Bat'leth.

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Easiest way for him to kill you: hit him with your car.
You’ll take out his legs and 1/2 ton of meat will come through your windshield.

The reason for the bumper stickers: “brake for moose, it could save your life”

7 months ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

When you brake you dip the front i end of your vehicle downward. This ensures the most will come through the windshield.

Speed up for moose.

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I,too, was taught to speed up for moose in the hope that you flip it over the driver's portion of the vehicle.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It’s when they are in rut, August thru October, that you have to worry. I had a full grown male walk thru my campsite. I don’t think he even cared that I was there. FYI they’re bigger than you think and he walked completely silently.

7 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I used to work as a medic at the USAF's survival school, one of the training areas had a lot of moose (and other wildlife). One time I had to stop the doctor I worked with from WALKING UP TO ONE. He was also my OIC....I would've never lived that one down if I let the doc I reported to/my OIC get trampled to death by a moose lol. One of our medics also got stalked by a cougar once (the actual animal, in this instance at least).

7 months ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 0

I've never seen a tame moose. I have to wonder if there are some, they're extremely rare. They are just as deadly as a polar bear.

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

At a snowmobile camp in Wyoming we had one come up to our porch and eat berries from our hand. Turns out the kitchen staff had been keeping her well fed.

Bring one to Minneapolis and throw it into the ICE compound

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Also if it gets in your way. The scary thing about moose accidents is that they end up going through the windshield because of their height, and they’re massive. Drive carefully in moose country and obey the moose signs. It could save your life. I had to break hard once to a stop and let a mom moose and two baby meese cross.

7 months ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I've seen18-wheelers lying on their side with a giant hole in the trailer sprawled across the highway.

It was mating season.

They're also known to charge at trains, derailing them and walking it off.

7 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Why did you have to say meese?! Why?!
