From the little bit of info I scraped from the internets - these are french farmers trying to run off squatters who are illegally on their property. Either these are tourists, or part of an illegal rave, depending on the source. This appears to have happened a day or two ago.
They are what we call "gitan" or "manouche" or "gens du voyage". Essentially people living in their camping cars or caravans with a very peculiar way of life. They are mostly secluded from society, speak their own language and are often associated with an increased crime rate (theft). But they can legally squat terrains like these and the city cannot do anything about it, so sometimes people get fed up and do it themselves but they are known to be very violent so 1/2
You need a huge force like those farmers have. And then leech off resources from the city for free (water and electricity) because it's illegal to cut water in France as it's a necessity. Anyway, it's the perfect storm.

There are entire companies up here that try to up-cycle gear left behind, including making backpacks and such out of tents that are totally unusable because they’re just trashed beyond repair. Watershed (Morgan Wallen) and Bass Canyon are both notoriously bad scenes for trash. Phish is surprisingly decent, for comparison. Bon Iver was like nobody even camped out.
I go to the Gorge for Beyond Wonderland some years- the trash isn't bad in my camping area, but I always pay for the nicer camping with private showers and such. The general admission camping is pretty terrible though

In my town (30k ppl) we had Tinker several times. They've been offered a place to camp and not only the wracked the whole place, they also started pushing the ppl living here to "pay for safety" or started fights "he looked at my girl", etc etc... shame that ppl abuse help, or even tolerance in that way.
Long story short, they're not allowed to enter this town anymore.

I've lived in Europe, and I support the theory that these are travelers. As for the sports car, who knows. They have some unexpected displays of wealth sometimes. Lots of questions. A lot of people have no visible means of support, so they are often accused of local thefts. It's a difficult situation. There is no law against not buying real estate as a people. Travelers go back further than towns, I guess.
