The thing people like me at the time didn't seem to get about that game is that the controls were analog: the harder you pressed the swim button the higher you went, and with a lighter the press you could control your movement better. Once a grasped that everything was easier. Really helped with a specific medium jump in the sewer level too.

The NES face buttons aren't analog and I don't think any Nintendo consoles have ever used that. Just PS2, PS3, and Gen1 Xbox.

Maybe I'm using the wrong terminology and it's a duration thing, but either way a quick tap does a hop and a hard press does a high rolling flip that makes you bounce off of the ceiling and land straight into the water every time on the sewer stage. There is definitely a subtlety that can be achieved with a single button.
