I have tried and tried to explain to my cat that the outside is one huge litter box!

Yeah but no one picks up the poop when they go outside. It sucks when there is random poop outside while walking.
I live in the country. No sidewalks and lots of free range pooping area

We would hear one soft "thunk" on the window and see the big orange cat sitting on the windowsill, meowing silently (Maine coon). Took us
months to figure out how he was doing it, as the ledge was too narrow for him to kick. Finally saw it: he was whacking the glass with the
side of his tail. Side note: he learned to meow out loud after his lifelong partner in crime died, and he found out that we couldn't hear
him the whole time.
