Legit - am I the asshole here?
A good friend of mine is/was having their wedding in New Orelans, LA in Oct. They found out today that indoor venues will be restricted to allow access to people with COVID negative tests or proof of the COVID vaccine.
https://www.cnn.com/2021/08/13/us/new-orleans-vaccination-proof/index.html
I didn't know they were anti-vaxx prior to this. They don't post a ton on Facebook, and our conversations are mostly personal and rarely breach into religion or politics. I am fully vaccinated.
We are out to dinner tonight and they are super bothered by this and she had been answering message after message on her phone the whole time about if they were going to cancel the wedding or move it or what over this news. I thought that was ridiculous in of itself but they kept piling in, which tells me that most of the people attending will also be anti-vaxx. She goes on batching and moaning about how she's being "forced" by the government to move her wedding as if it were some kind of personal conspiracy to specifically ruin her wedding.
So I'm not going. I left dinner and didn't tell her why.
DrunkBobRoss
Nope.
Caxafvujq
You absolutely are not the asshole. In all honesty, I would cut ties.
margaretolson
I’m immunocompromised & just RSVPd no to my cousin’s wedding because they’re allowing unvaxxed guests. It sucks but I have to protect myself
ilovebigmutts
Nope. Wife's oldest daughter is becoming more and more unhinged. I'm avoiding her, last time she was on my deck I had to leave.
MrCroupAndMrVandemar
100% you are not TAH.
Heninthefoxden
I had FOUR canceled weddings during covid. If the purpose is "the wedding" and they can't adjust, maybe they're not getting married for the
Heninthefoxden
right reasons.
Baughr
I skipped my good friends wedding in the middle of last year's surge. A couple of friends caught it and some parents ended up in the hospita
onecowboytoo
What gets me is all these people going to concerts and other large gatherings like life is back to normal even if they are vaxxed..dumb
alcamar
Skipping a good friend's wedding in September myself. They aren't antivax, but I have kids at home and can't chance bringing it back.
alcamar
Friend understands, and would love to see him and everyone else. If your friend doesn't understand, he's not a good friend anyway
WhellerNG
We’re at the point if someone is Anti vax, they aren’t a good friend. They aren’t willing to put aside their bullshit to protect others. (1)
WhellerNG
It’s time to cut these people out of our lives. (2/2)
ItsActuallyDavidNow
These people have never suffered the consequences of their actions. Losing a friend might open their eyes.
quizquare
I skipped my brother's wedding a few months back because he wasn't taking basic precautions. He had the nerve to ask to use my young kids.
KatsDontDance
Yikes, kids should definitely not be involved in big group stuff right now
SirDistic
You're wondering if you made the right decision to not be around unvaccinated people unmasked at a wedding? yeah you're good
rattytom
Ain't seen my Da or sibs in over a year because of their dumbness. Only me Ma, who I have been helping stay sober 3 years now and is vaxxed.
DarkLionArt
Backwards. They are the assholes. Not you.
CandiedCorn
Dude's wife has stage 4 cancer, needed extended care, was discharged early to make room for unvaxxed covid. Your friend's "opinion", kills.
KatsDontDance
They're definitely no longer my friend unless they get the shot. Js.
CandiedCorn
I hope you tell her that.
ImDJSendBoobs
You are not the asshole if you don't go. It's still your choice if you go or not. But don't let anyone fault you for your choice.
Stoneleigh219
Wedding/Funeral combo, smart way to save right there.
AnimalGenetaliaAudioClues
Nope
Idolwild
Vaccination is neither religion or politics. Let’s call a spade a spade. This is public health and I refuse to tolerate these people anymore
KatsDontDance
I never said that it was, just that our conversations aren't deep and never venture into those topics.
TheChunguskaEvent
I would make exactly the same call.
redamancy
Same. But I would say exactly why I’m not coming.
TheChunguskaEvent
I'd make them ask first so I can frame it as me reacting rather than provoking, and turn it back on their choices. But then, I'm an asshole.
redamancy
Oh absolutely. I’d say I’m unable and that’s it. When they ask why, I’ll be brutally honest. I’m a bitch but I’m polite.
missiletowe12
Similar...i'd have left laughing. But, no, not tgge AH.
SliderOfElay
You should tell them why. You are only an asshole if you lie to them.
KatsDontDance
I won't lie, but I also won't volunteer the reason. I kind of want them to ask me why, and then explain it
AceOfShovels
Be upfront about not going to the wedding and your reason at least.
hwatL4bloopy
Being vaxxed isn't religious and or political. It's public health. It's better that you don't go, cite safety concerns. If they insist. Show
KatsDontDance
I agree it isn't a political issue. Most conservatives in my state don't see it as a health issue. They strictly see it as a political prob
hwatL4bloopy
Up with double mask and face shield and a pool noodle to push people away
JustDriftingAboutTheInterWebs
You couldn't pay me to go to an event with anti vaxxers. Don't care what the relationship is.
DooksandPooks
I would go for about $50,000. I’d mask up and get trashed and thrown out of the wedding.
JustDriftingAboutTheInterWebs
That's big brain shit right there. +1
Krasnopeev
You're probably doing it now when you go to the store or most places to be honest
JustDriftingAboutTheInterWebs
I'm in Florida, pretty sure going to my mailbox would count
Krasnopeev
Haha same here in Vegas. Go to store *cough*, *sniff*, no mask.
ittakes131337
Dropped my real estate agent because she was anti vax. Week later found out she caught the variant.
TheS4ndm4n
Good thing you pruned her in time.
Mazzy94
You could pay me... it would have to be at least 100000 usd. I would thereafter quarantine.
SmaugTheTerrible61
Thorinori
Would be that + any potential medical bills for me
Mazzy94
Myself, I've already had Covid and a vaccine. Good odds. If not, I can leave it to my family?♀️
Geistbar
Don't forget you'd wear a mask while there.
Mazzy94
Not doing ao they would have to pay me triple?
SmaugTheTerrible61

I’m a science teacher in an antivax state. Wish me luck for a myriad of reasons this school year. Thankfully I’m vaccinated!
JustDriftingAboutTheInterWebs
Oof, good luck.
Pattosaurus20xx
The wedding photographer stories from the past year are pretty egregious
iGotFOLDERS
I’d love to read some. Where did you find them?
SmaugTheTerrible61
EmanonInverse
Are there any places they are gathered, and would you kindly direct me towards them, thanks muchly.
FaecalJacksonPollock
No. If anything, YTA for not cutting them out of your life immediately. Antivaxxers should be shunned from society.
KatsDontDance
To be fair, I didnt know she was anti-vaxx until this incident v.v
ASquirrelNamedLloyd
And sometimes they come around
ElaineTheNPC
I feel you.
Hypnoticcow
Friend went to a wedding. Everyone vaxxed. Groom caught it along with a few others.
FlyingTigerRose
It can happen. If you're vaxxed and still get it, it won't be as bad. There's a much better chance of beating it, with less consequences.
Hypnoticcow
I keep trying to explain this to my SO. Wants to wait until it's fully approved, it's driving me mad.
FlyingTigerRose
I've read of people dying of Covid who aid the same. Both of you please take care and be safe. (Safest thing being getting vaxxed.)
CatatonicCowMoo
Methinks someone lied.
LocalZoophile
Yeah... unless someone is verifying vax status, I'd skip it.
sozensloth
You can still get and transmit the virus with vaccination. The chances are WAY lower and the symptoms are WAY milder, but not impossible.
Hypnoticcow
Could be, they didn't need to have proof but they think it was the groom who got infected first.
LoodGookin
Dam strippers.
CatatonicCowMoo
Was the groom vaxxed?
Hypnoticcow
Yes
CatatonicCowMoo
Oh, well then I'm flummoxed. Is everyone okay now?
haggerton
Vax doesn't stop Delta transmission. https://www.cnbc.com/2021/08/12/herd-immunity-is-mythical-with-the-covid-delta-variant-experts-say.html
CatatonicCowMoo
You're right. And I thought about that. But with the number of people infected I'd assume someone lied over someone vaxxed with delta did it
CatatonicCowMoo
But I could be wrong. It's just my opinion!
kuriosly
If it was a breakthrough its more likely to breakthrough again as that sub strain already broke vaccination and caused symptoms once.
Rhythmaster
The vaccine still reduces chances of transmission/infection significantly. I'm just saying this because there has been a wave of weird
Rhythmaster
Misleading headlines and news stories(maybe misunderstood?) Even from normally trustworthy news sources, if you want to learn more about
Rhythmaster
Delta variant and the risk for vaccinated people, I recommend just go directly to CDC website and read what they have there.
